This was just…I didn‘t like it. It was frantic and jerky, and we get dropped in in the middle of…something. And everyone and everything is talked about like we know what it is. It‘s like if you opened a Wheel of Time book and started in the middle. I don‘t have the patience to keep reading and see if it ever makes sense.

RamsFan1963 I felt the same way, so I bailed too. 2y

Apart from becoming so desensitized from Grim Dark fantasy I just kind of don't really enjoy it at all. This is about a mercenary band and while I do enjoy the threads of found family and history nerd chronicling their adventures overall I just got tired of it being about Evil vs Evil. I also had trouble with the fact that there was kind of no resolution for the main characters. IDK if I want to read on tbh.

I haven't heard great things of this book, so I'm not going in with high expectations. Giving it a try since I got it for free.

Gotta admit though, that's a great opening paragraph. "His marvelous hindsight" ?? a great blend of epic with snark. On the other hand, I'm not much further now and the death toll is already in the 100s... which suggests I'm probably not the audience for this book. We'll see what happens...

llwheeler Nothing against action scenes, I just need to know why I care about the people / situation and I usually find when it's right at the start, I don't care enough yet. 5y
esurient I read the core trilogy ages ago and admired the inventive gore, but I thought the plots grew repetative and eventually lost my interest. I usually only recommend it for fans of military fiction. 5y
llwheeler @esurient Which is definitely not my sub-genre, so strengthens my feeling I'm not the right audience for this one. But good to read outside of my preferences sometimes, so I'll still see how it goes 5y

Oh hey fellow #sfftbrchallenge people! if you're looking for something for the unboundworlds best 100 fantasy prompt, this is on the list and Tor has it free until end of day Aug 30. (US/Can only though).

Anyone read it? I hadn't heard of it before - fittingly for the challenge prompt!

shanaqui I remember that I didn't much care to read more of the series, but not whether that was just taste or if I really disliked the book or what. 6y
llwheeler @shanaqui I would not be surprised if I feel the same but hey the price is right to give it a shot lol 6y
DuckOfDoom I've always wanted to read this. A friend of mine did not like it and our tastes are so different, so I wanted to give it a try. 6y
llwheeler @DuckOfDoom 😂 for a book on the best fantasy list, so far I've only heard of people disliking it. I'm curious to read it now! Hopefully later this fall i'll be a bit less busy and can post some reactions as i go 6y

So disappointing. I'd heard many great things about this series, but I just couldn't get into it. I found myself looking for reasons to read anything else but this. Maybe I'll try again some other time

I made myself a little reading corner near the window. It‘s usually the dog‘s “watching the street” space but I stole it for my own purpose. Two cacti live here behind the tv where they get some sun and I get light as well. Today‘s #fantasy read is The Black Company.

TiredLibrarian I'm not a big fantasy fan, but my significant other loved this series! 📚😊 6y
Vinjii @TiredLibrarian I just started. Not sure yet about the choppy writing style. But intriguing beginning. 6y

Although it started off rather abruptly (reader is explained nothing, just dropped into the book) it was a great read. Filled with battle scenes, lots of backstabbing, it's a great fantasy novel. Especially with those that are into military fiction with a fantasy twist to it. (Think, roman type of soldiers but mercenaries). Excellent novel. Worth the read.

This book is impregnated with the the iron stench of blood. War, death and fear stalk it's pages, following the black company in its endless mindless journey. This is grim, this is dark and in my opinion one of the greatest fantasy masterworks. I am obsessed.
