This novel, based on the murder of Latasha Harlan‘s in 1991, takes us back to the riots in LA and explains why the Korean stores were vandalized and set aflame. (I always wondered about that.) Two families struggle with their part in and consequence of the murder. While the story seemed longer than necessary, it captured the patterns of fear, violence, secrets, racism, and retribution very well. 3.5 stars. #TOB2020

BarbaraBB You‘re doing well with the shortlist! This one is on my tbr. I now started 6h
Suet624 @barbaraBB I‘m getting there! Oval sounds so interesting. Here‘s hoping you enjoy it. 🤞 (edited) 6h

I enjoyed this book a lot. It‘s about a dystopian world where lying is the ultimate crime and a whole society is build on protecting the truth. Beside dystopian the book is a thriller in which two detectives (‘speculators‘) are hunting for the ultimate truth to protect their golden state.
The question is: what is true? I loved this premise and its execution despite it feeling a bit rushed in the end.

Hooked_on_books Yeah, I thought this one was cool. Really unique idea. 15h
thebluestocking I‘m glad you liked it! I really liked the set up and voice in this one. But the end kind of ruined it for me. 💙 8h
BarbaraBB @thebluestocking I can see why but for me it felt like the right ending with a lot of unanswered questions about thruth and lies. I kind of thought that fitting. 8h

#bookreport #weeklyforecast

Another good reading week in the books! I‘m slowly but surely finishing up the books off the #tob2020 shortlist and, incidentally off my #BotM backlist. I am not positive what I‘ll pick up next; it‘ll largely depend on my mood this week!

Cinfhen Wow!!! Great week with lots of good books in the mix! How‘s 2d
thebluestocking @Cinfhen Thanks! I just barely started Optic Nerve. I‘m still acclimating to it. 2d
Cinfhen Guess I‘ll have to wait and see 😊 2d

thebluestocking @Cinfhen Ha! Me too. 💙 2d
BarbaraBB I too am looking forward to your thoughts on Optic Nerve! How many books have you read from the shortlist so far? 2d
thebluestocking @BarbaraBB It looks like I‘ve read 12 from the shortlist and I have plans to read four more. I don‘t think I‘m going to go Oval or We Cast a Shadow? 💙 How many have you read? (edited) 1d

#WeeklyForecast 05/20

I am currently reading and loving Ways to Hide in Winter. I‘ll finish it soon I guess, not able to do much more until I know how it ends.
Then it‘s on with the #ToB2020 shortlist, hoping to tick off some prompts for the challenges as well.

Megabooks I have Oval, but it got put down in “the great migraine bail” halfway finished. It is...odd. 3d
Cinfhen Curious about Ben Winters novel / I own it but it‘s currently in Miami 😝 3d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Do you think you will pick it up again? 2d

BarbaraBB @Cinfhen It starts off really good - but I‘m a sucker for dystopia! 2d
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes 👍🏻 2d
Megabooks Okay, so I decided to pick Oval back up and skim the first 8 chapters I read before I put it down. I want to be able to talk to you about it. When you get to Louis and Anja meeting at the house party in the suburbs, let me know. 👍🏻📚😘 2d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I will! Looking forward to it already but it can take a while as I just started 2d

Domino and I are staying warm on this snowy Saturday afternoon and finishing up another book from the #tob2020 shortlist. This was an entertaining read about accepting people even with all of their faults. It was a quick, easy read. Good narrative voice as well, but overall probably 3⭐️ at most.

thebluestocking I liked but didn‘t love this one too. I had a hard time believing Lilian‘s interactions with the kids. 💙 2d

#BookReport 04/20

I read and enjoyed Kaddish and The House and its Head. Unforgettable I couldn‘t keep track of what happened in Overthrow and I bailed on that one even though it is short for the #ToB2020.

Cinfhen Sorry that #ToB was a stinker 😆 3d
thebluestocking Oh. That‘s sad about Overthrow. I have a copy coming my way this week. 💙 2d
BarbaraBB @thebluestocking It just wasn‘t the right time - maybe. I was too impatient I think. I hope you will like it! 2d

Bailedbailed

I bailed. I am really not in the mood for this struggle from page to page.
It is just not the right book at the right moment. I did like the writing style but found myself not interested in the plot.
Most of all I liked the cover, because I love the painter Valloton 💜. This is however one of his lesser works - I think. You should check him out, he has painted reading women in a fantastic way. Wait, I‘ll show you in my next post! #ToB2020

TrishB Sometimes you just have to bail 🤷‍♀️ 4d
Megabooks Onward and upward! 4d
merelybookish You are more generous than I was! But I understand the bail. 55m

Pickpick

I was riveted by this tale of Hiram, the black slave son of his master and his mother who was sold when he was nine. At turns heartbreaking and redemptive, I loved Coates‘s observations of slavery and the Underground. The only things that kept this from being a five-star book were the details of Hi‘s personal involvement in the Underground. (More in the comments, if you‘re interested.) Overall, though, this is a gem of a book. #tob #tob2020 #botm

thebluestocking First, I thought Hi‘s contribution to the Underground throughout was underdeveloped. Second, I was disappointed in Hi‘s use of conduction at the end. It seemed unnecessary since the whole estate went to Corinne right after. 6d

Making great progress on #tob2020 reading. Currently reading the tagged book. Favorites so far are “Lost Children Archive”, “Your House Will Pay”, and “Mary Toft”. Seven more to go!

BarbaraBB You‘re doing great! And you have Girl Woman Other to look forward to! Nothing to See Here is great don‘t you think? (edited) 1w
Suet624 Nice work. I‘m excited by how many I‘ve read too. Still need to find a few though. 1w
Redwritinghood @BarbaraBB Thanks! So far it‘s a fun and easy read. 1w
