⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Make dumb choices, win stupid prizes. A hauntingly written battle of conscience.

I remember hearing this story when it happened on Father‘s Day 2005, but couldn‘t remember the outcome of the trial. 3 boys killed when their father‘s car left the road and plunged into a dam. Unthinkable! I am not the only person visiting this book now. Dia Lipa is also reading it. This book irritated me not because of the writing (Helen can do no wrong) but because of the crime I think. There were so many inconsistencies with the evidence. 4⭐️

CarolynM She‘s a fabulous writer, but I couldn‘t read this book💔 3mo
Jeg I‘ve been thinking about a reread of her books. Remember this made me very angry. With him. 3mo
Reggie Is Dua trying to break into books? I just dnf‘ed a book blurbed by her and I thought it was so random. 3mo

Been a while since I‘ve relaxed with a book at soccer practice. It‘s warm but pretty nice out! 📖⚽️

I know Boyne is well liked, but apparently he‘s as bad as JKR and I thought people might want to know.

TheBookHippie I knew this. Also he‘s hugely antisemitic… covered in writing so you feel bad for the non Jewish person in his writing… hugely problematic. It is disappointing as I loved some of his books… there have been articles before about him. Not this huge however. 😵‍💫 3mo
lil1inblue Ugh. Gross. The statement from Polari gave me so much ick. 3mo
TrishB I‘ve been following this on Twitter….its been known for a while, sadly. 3mo
BarbaraBB Wow this is new to me. 3mo
Hooked_on_books @TheBookHippie @TrishB My guess is this story hasn‘t been as big as JKR because he lacks her level of fame. But it makes me glad I‘ve never read any of his books. I for sure won‘t now. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I loved The Hearts invisible Furies by him … then I read quotes from him on how there were good Nazis 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫. 3mo
marleed Oh dang. I‘ve loved his books but have now dropped him from my auto read authors. 3mo
AmyG NOOOOOOOO. Goddammit. @TheBookHippie WTF? (edited) 3mo
lil1inblue @TheBookHippie What the what now? 😵 3mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG yup even got into a war of words with THE Auschwitz Memorial and others …. @lil1inblue (edited) 3mo
Deblovestoread So incredibly disappointing! I don‘t know why I expect better from authors but I do. (edited) 3mo
Hooked_on_books @TheBookHippie Sure, all those good Nazis! What were the rest of us thinking? 😵‍💫 3mo
peaKnit @AmyG I think you were reading my mind with your comment. WTF indeed! 💩 3mo
CarolynM Seems a bizarre decision by Polari. I didn‘t know Boyne was problematic but I didn‘t much like the only one of his books I‘ve read so I wasn‘t planning on reading any more anyway. 3mo
Amiable DAMN. I love(d) Boyne‘s books. I‘d heard none of this. It feels like a kick in the stomach. 3mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie sounds like an author to avoid. 3mo
AmyG @Amiable Same. 😢 3mo
janeycanuck I heard rumblings about this a few years after The Heart‘s Invisible Furies came out but nothing definitive. How disappointing that he‘s still on this train. 3mo

“I dreamed that I dreamed about the musty grey soil of the island and the sweet perfume it emits after rainfall, a double remove from a place I will never visit again. My mother explained to me once… We find the scent comforting, she told me, because we want to believe there‘ll be a welcoming place for us one day, when we‘re buried deep inside it.”
Phenomenal. John Boyne never disappoints me.

After reading Water I moved immediately to this book and for a short book (148 pages) it dealt with a lot of big issues such as sexuality, sex work, abuse, and guilt. Again, a difficult read (and at times I struggled with the timeline of this book and how it fit with the previous, loosely connected book). Still, I am interested in finishing the series.

In this installment a pair of famous footballers are on trial for rape. We follow our MC, Evan, as he takes stock of his life and how he ended up in this situation.

As always, Boyne makes us take a hard look at the consequences of life‘s choices, be it those that we make or those that have been made for us.

3.8/5 🌟

Not as good as the first book, but still engaging and worth the read.
