These dudes are cracking me up

Magic's Promise | Mercedes Lackey

I really enjoy the way Lackey writes characters hanging out, which is good, because this book (like the last one) takes nearly half the page count for some plot thing to happen.

The podcast Shelved By Genre has picked their next unit, which means I'll be reading Mercedes Lackey for the first time! I think there are psychic horses on these?

1- I‘ve loved Isabella since I was little. Interestingly though it was not on my name list if we had a girl.
2- this trilogy has an Elspeth and a Talia both of which I love.

TheSpineView Cool name choice. Thanks for playing 5mo

Just popping in to say hello! Show season has started and I've been crazy busy and haven't kept up with Litsy the way I'd like to. (And yes, I owe some people #LitsyLove letters, too)

Pippin and I have taken the evening off and are cuddled up reading the latest Valdemar trilogy and drinking tea.

RaeLovesToRead Pippin!!! 🤗🤗🤗 8mo
AmyG Enjoy, you two. Hope the season is going well! 8mo
GondorGirl @AmyG It is! But four shows in five weeks is exhausting and I'm ready for a few days off. 8mo

This started off really well, but it got really bogged down in the later part of the book. I think Lackey tried to cram too much in and got lost trying to make some things work.
The business of setting up a kingdom eventually forces someone to become king, and Valdemar‘s new king is gifted Companions through an alliance of gods. Then they must establish that Companions are good and fight some evil.
2/5 disappointing but not awful.

CatLass007 I‘m sorry the book was only so-so, but it looks like you have a great reading companion. 💕🐕 What‘s the baby‘s name? I know there‘s a #CatsOfLitsy but is there a #DogsOfLitsy? 9mo
CatLass007 I just checked and there are over 6000 posts using that tag. And now you‘re on there because I used the tag. I always forget to tag it when one of my posts includes one of my cats. 9mo

Somewhat anticlimactic end to the founding trilogy. I do wonder if I was expecting too much from it - clarifying the mystery of how the Companions came to exist is no small feat!

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I think part of the problem is that the book is too plot-driven; it felt like it knew what points it had to flesh out, given that it is a prequel. Unfortunately, that meant that it relied far too much on the reader knowing why certain characters were significant from their legendary status in the (chronologically) future books, rather than doing the work in this book to make me care about them. 10mo

Pickpick

This latest short story anthology marks the 17th one set in Valdemar. Beside it, is the first—published in 1997—& admittedly, the last one that I read. I‘ve never been a big fan of the short fiction format, but I am a huge fan of Lackey and after the last few weeks, I could think of nothing better than the familiarity of this wonderful world she created. This is a mix of stories— some with firmer foundations than others but makes for a fun read!

GondorGirl I have all of the anthologies and really enjoy that some of the stories have continued from each collection to the next. And Misty's stories are always lovely. I can't wait to read this newest addition. 12mo
TorieStorieS @GondorGirl After reading the author info at the end, I realized that must be the case- I have added the middle volumes now to my used bookstore wishlist! One day, I want to re-read the entire series! It‘s been so long since I‘ve done that and with these anthologies, there would be plenty new to me! 12mo
GondorGirl @TorieStorieS I just had a Facebook memory pop up from the last time I did an entire series re-read. It was seven years ago. Maybe I'll take a month this winter and devote it to Valdemar. 12mo
TorieStorieS @GondorGirl I think my last re-read was 15 years ago! I have read a few of the newer books here and there but it‘s been too long! (edited) 12mo

Magic's Pawn:
Exasperated by his musical, dandy-ish, unmartial son Vanyel, Lord Withen sends him to stay with Savil, the boy's aunt at the court in Haven, as a punishment.

A quick, enjoyable coming-of-age, if rather overwrought, story set in a magic world. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I'd read it when it first came out and was closer to Vanyel's age. ⬇

rwmg Magic's Promise
12 years later, Vanyel is now a seasoned Herald-Mage in desperate need of rest and recuperation and so returns home to Forst Reach where he has to deal with some unresolved issues from his childhood and a dangerous political situation across the borders.

A quick read which kept me turning the pages to see what happened next without it being particularly emotionally engaging. ⬇

rwmg Magic's Price
Can the singing of a young Bard help ease the pain of the King of Valdemar, who is slowly dying?

I felt this one dragged a bit in places and there seemed to be a lot more typos in the text. But it was still a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.

GondorGirl These were the books that got me into fantasy as a tween. While they aren't my favorite Valdemar books, they're always going to hold a special place in my heart. 14mo
