These dudes are cracking me up
I really enjoy the way Lackey writes characters hanging out, which is good, because this book (like the last one) takes nearly half the page count for some plot thing to happen.

The podcast Shelved By Genre has picked their next unit, which means I'll be reading Mercedes Lackey for the first time! I think there are psychic horses on these?
1- I‘ve loved Isabella since I was little. Interestingly though it was not on my name list if we had a girl.
2- this trilogy has an Elspeth and a Talia both of which I love.
#two4tuesday
Just popping in to say hello! Show season has started and I've been crazy busy and haven't kept up with Litsy the way I'd like to. (And yes, I owe some people #LitsyLove letters, too)
Pippin and I have taken the evening off and are cuddled up reading the latest Valdemar trilogy and drinking tea.
This started off really well, but it got really bogged down in the later part of the book. I think Lackey tried to cram too much in and got lost trying to make some things work.
The business of setting up a kingdom eventually forces someone to become king, and Valdemar‘s new king is gifted Companions through an alliance of gods. Then they must establish that Companions are good and fight some evil.
2/5 disappointing but not awful.
Somewhat anticlimactic end to the founding trilogy. I do wonder if I was expecting too much from it - clarifying the mystery of how the Companions came to exist is no small feat!
This latest short story anthology marks the 17th one set in Valdemar. Beside it, is the first—published in 1997—& admittedly, the last one that I read. I‘ve never been a big fan of the short fiction format, but I am a huge fan of Lackey and after the last few weeks, I could think of nothing better than the familiarity of this wonderful world she created. This is a mix of stories— some with firmer foundations than others but makes for a fun read!

Pulled out an old favorite with a flowing #scarf on the cover 🧡

Magic's Pawn:
Exasperated by his musical, dandy-ish, unmartial son Vanyel, Lord Withen sends him to stay with Savil, the boy's aunt at the court in Haven, as a punishment.
A quick, enjoyable coming-of-age, if rather overwrought, story set in a magic world. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I'd read it when it first came out and was closer to Vanyel's age. ⬇
