The characters in this book have been accused of a number of #violations and I'm not even 100 pages into it!

Megabooks Yikes!! 8mo

Busy day, I'm late with my #StarTrekSummerMay for Friday. #Violations was a truly creepy episode, showing the dark side of mental powers. It made my skin crawl watching it again.

#StarTrekSummerMay #Violations @Megabooks

Megabooks It is terrible! Young Picard and young Crusher we‘re particularly creepy. 9mo

If #Liaisons was the rapey episode, #Violations is exactly what it says on the tin. I'm skipping that one. See you folks tomorrow. #startreksummermay

Megabooks Sorry! I wasn‘t thinking clearly when I chose such a triggery episode. I‘m far from perfect. Hopefully see you with Future Imperfect tomorrow!! 9mo
tournevis @Megabooks Not your fault! I blame Berman and Paramount. 9mo

#Violations was probably my first introduction to rape, & I think, at 11, I was too young to understand it.

When I rewatched the series at 25, this was one of the harder episodes for me to watch. I still don‘t watch it often.

I read Missoula a couple of years ago. It was hard also, but no longer shocking. I want to read Not That Bad, but I have to be in the right mindset, & I just haven‘t been there yet.

Curious to see what other Trekkies think

GlassAsDiamonds Not at all tempted by the Gay (wasn‘t a fan of anything other than the Bad Feminist essay in Bad Feminist, for all that that one essay was spectacular) but devoted Trekkie. I‘m conflicted over the episode - You always knew they‘d push the boundaries where possible so it‘s often not “mindless” entertainment... but it was a well done episode. Hmm 🤔🤔🤔 9mo
Megabooks @GlassAsDiamonds I am a big fan of Roxane Gay‘s nonfiction. I liked Bad Feminist, and I loved Hunger. I think this was definitely a boundary-pushing episode as far as what they‘d put on TV, but I think it‘s also very 90s as well. The conversation about consent, etc. has changed so much in 30 years. 9mo

tournevis @GlassAsDiamonds It was well done, true, but I'm never watching that epi again, which means not seeing the great Keiko scene, but there you go. 9mo
Megabooks @tournevis @tournevis The Keiko part was definitely the best part! 9mo
tournevis @Megabooks Such a good scene! 9mo
GlassAsDiamonds @tournevis yeah, I won‘t be rushing to re-watch it either (but Keiko forever!!!!!!!!!). I‘m impressed on reflection that the victims weren‘t “just” female, especially for the age of the show. @Megabooks I don‘t mind that the conversation has changed (but I‘m an avid reader of 1800‘s pulp fiction & a tad obsessed with context). I am a little concerned that just how ground breaking it was could be lost on a 2019 audience using a 2019 lense? 9mo
tournevis @GlassAsDiamonds Good point about the gender of the victims, although 2/3... And you're right about consent. Troy is the only one to explicitly say no don't in this. I'm just tired of Troy and O'Brien getting abused and assulted. It was rape Troy and torture O'Brien. Could they not find another story to tell? 9mo
GlassAsDiamonds @tournevis Troy does seem to be the sacrificial lamb for a good number of storyline‘s doesn‘t she.... 🤔🤔🤔🤔 I cant remember enough of the O‘Brien storyline‘s! 8mo
tournevis @GlassAsDiamonds PTSD on top of PTSD on top of near death experiences on top of prison torture. 8mo

#TheChase is one of my favorite episodes. In it, the major aliens in the show and the Enterprise crew are in a race to gather DNA samples from various planets to put together to solve a puzzle.

I thought the message was positive, and it explained why all the aliens look similar 😉

One of my favorite chase-centered books & movies is Catch Me If You Can. It was one of my favorite pieces of nonfiction when I started reading again after vet school.

Megabooks #StarTrekSummerMay PS I‘m sorry #Liaisons was such an unpopular choice. Please don‘t watch tomorrow‘s episode #Violations if rape is a TW for you. 💜 9mo
khooliha I don't think you need to feel bad about Liaisons! It falls in the weird realm of season 7, where sometimes episodes feel a little half-baked because of planning for the finale/Generations. I think it just needed a little more polish. 9mo
khooliha As for Violations... the thing about it is that is a sadly typical episode for Deanna, who deserved better from the writers almost everytime they decided to make her the focus of the ep. 9mo

Megabooks @khooliha Yes, TNG had one of the worst final seasons of any Trek. I on the other hand, DS9‘s was pretty good. 9mo
Megabooks @khooliha Marina was a better actress than the treatment she was given. I‘m glad DS9 and VOY had stronger female roles. 9mo
khooliha @Megabooks Season 7 of TNG is really ueven, but anything with Lower Decks, All Good Things, and one of my favorite Trek guilty pleasures Genesis can't be all bad. I remember season 7 of DS9 feeling like a rollercoaster, though I'm not sure I could pinpoint why. 9mo
khooliha @Megabooks Both Deanna and Beverly were let down by the writers and it's probably the number one thing I wish TNG did better. Imagine if they got the kind of writing Kira, Be'lanna, or Seven did! 9mo
Megabooks @khooliha Agree on Lower Decks and Genesis! Just watching Michael Dorn tear up that mattress in Genesis was fun. 😝. I didn‘t love DS9 season 7 until I watched the episodes a second or third time. Now it has some of my fav episodes. I caught Covenant on TV the other day 👍🏻👍🏻! 9mo
Megabooks @khooliha Yes! Yes! On the women of the 24th century Treks. 9mo
Moodyreader ohhh i love star trek ❤️ 9mo
Megabooks @Moodyreader awesome! I‘d love for you to join the photo challenge if you want. You can find it under this book. I‘m doing a different series each month. 😁👍🏻 9mo
Avidreader25 I‘m rewatching Star Trek TNG for the first time in years. So good! 9mo
tournevis I like this episode too! 9mo
tournevis @Megabooks Seconded 9mo
tournevis @khooliha @Megabooks Not the writers' fault so much as Rick Berman's. The only reason there were better women characters in DS9 is Ira Behr and in VOY is Mulgrew herself (the fits she had to throw). Berman is a terrible sexist, racist and homophobic para-person. 9mo
khooliha @tournevis Oh yeah, Berman is trash. I listened to the 50 Year Mission books and yelled WTF at a lot of his comments. By the end I was boo-ing. 9mo
tournevis @khooliha If you get a chance to watch What We Left Behind (coming out next week) on DS9, the whole crew and Ira Behr spend a good third of it shitting on Berman, pardon my French. 9mo
khooliha @tournevis I'm going to try to catch the doc in theaters! I'm very excited. 9mo
tournevis @khooliha Me too! 9mo
Megabooks @Avidreader25 I watched it on dvd 11 years after the last episode and fell in love again! 9mo
Megabooks @tournevis @khooliha Yes, I‘ve been hearing about the doc a lot on twitter!! I want to see it. Rick Berman is trash. That‘s all there is! I googled “Rick Berman ruined Star Trek” back when I was doing a rewatch 10 years ago, and no one agreed. What?!??! And Jake and Nog aka the NoJake Consortium have a podcast now. Just FYI if you didn‘t know. 9mo
khooliha @Megabooks I did not know that! It is Very Pertinent to my interests. 9mo
tournevis @khooliha @Megabooks No gays in ST before Disco? Berman. Terry Farrell got fired? Berman. Seven of Nine? Played by his then girlfriend (Ryan hates him now too). Deanna Troy getting assaulted multiple times in cannon? Berman. He's trash. 9mo
Megabooks @tournevis I thought Jeri dated Brannon Braga. And I thought Terry left to do Becker. Does she say something different in the doc? 9mo
tournevis @Megabooks So Jeri did date Bragga. But things got “complicated“. Terry did not leave to do Becker. She was forced out because she asked for accommodations to do other work (that the other actors got) and getting fewer storylines, among other crap. So she was fired by Berman. Ira Behr is on record as saying he had not known about the crap she was subjected to and was told by Berman she left of her own volition. 9mo
Megabooks @tournevis Interesting. I want to watch the doc!!! I feel bad for Jeri. She‘s dated/married some bad men. (Jack Ryan sex club, anyone?) I‘m really glad Berman is not doing ST anymore. On the lighter side, I think it‘s adorable that Terri is married to Adam Nimoy. I hope they‘re happy. 9mo
tournevis @Megabooks Me too. It's a good ending. In the US, I think that the only day the doc will be in theaters is 13 May. In Canada, you get a few more days. I saw theaters advertize it for 13, 15 and 18 May. My ticket is for the 18th. 9mo
Megabooks @tournevis @khooliha new Nana Vistor interview https://sciencefiction.com/2019/05/08/exclusive-interview-nana-visitor-talks-sta.... And she‘s in a Lifetime movie this weekend! https://www.mylifetime.com/movies/killer-grandma I‘d be interested to see her as a grandmother!! 9mo
tournevis @Megabooks Great interview! As for the movie, not in Canada, looks like. 9mo
Megabooks @tournevis It was a great interview! Boo on the movie. I‘ve set up to record it. I love seeing fav ST actors in other roles. 9mo
Cinfhen Wow!!! Lots of Trekkie talk!!!! When I see The Chase I think of my lovely friend @jenniferw88 💕💕😁 9mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen We Trekkies definitely have opinions!! Have you seen the episode?? I think you put a dozen Trekkies in a room and you‘ll get six dozen ideas about the series, Trek in general, actors, producers, etc! It‘s a really vibrant community! 9mo
Cinfhen I‘ve never seen a single episode or any of the films 🙈 can we still be friends?!?!!! 😘😘😘 9mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen of course, my dear! 😘😘 It‘s never too late to become a Trekkie, though 😉😉🖖🏻🖖🏻 9mo
Cinfhen Ha, you might just convert me 🧡 9mo
jenniferw88 @Megabooks @Cinfhen funnily enough, there was a tweet a couple of weeks ago by one of the chasers about this episode and the definition of racism in it! Typically I can't find it now! 🤣🤣🤣 9mo
