I first heard this word in the children‘s song when I was very young and to little me Kookaburra sounded like a nonsense word. Aside from the fact that I‘m not Australian and had no cause to see one or hear it discussed as wildlife, maybe because it doesn‘t get an article in the song so it resembled a name like Kermit or Snuffleupagus? Not sure… ⬇️
IndoorDame At any rate when we get ideas in our head young enough we tend not to re-interrogate them later without a shift in perspective or context, and it was only when I saw this in a Mary Oliver poem the other day that I realized it was a real animal and went looking for info on it 🤣 11mo

IndoorDame @TheBookHippie oooo, I wonder if there was one at the Bronx Zoo back when I was little. We visited there a lot! I don‘t remember much about their birds though… 11mo

TheBookgeekFrau I learned that song in elementary school, too! I love it and still sing it to my granddaughter. And I also used to go to the Bronx Zoo a lot as a kid and I used to take my daughter when she was little. Such a great zoo! 11mo
