The Mothers: A Novel | Brit Bennett
post image
Pickpick

Secrets can bring us together and tear us apart. Bennett's story weaves and untangles three character's relationships over the course of their lives. You'll want to read this one with pen in hand to underline all of your favorite lines. Thanks for the recommendation @CaitBud !

Reviewsbylola This is definitely on my TBR list. 8y

We see the span of her life unspooling in colorful threads and we chase it, wrapping it around our hands as more tumbles out. She's her mothers age now. Double her age. Our age. You're our mother. We're climbing inside of you.

A beautiful, understated collection of stories about an unnamed woman living in a cottage by the sea. I wish I had a physical copy of this so I could underline every line.

Jillreads I was just thinking the same thing! I typically check everything out from the library, but this is an underline worthy book! 8y

A dark story of a middle-aged daughter's identity unraveling while investigating her mother's last days. Ferrante has such a command of language and pace--you'll spend so much more time on this little book than expected.

A delightful read about friendship and marriage. Full of emotion and realistic tension. Straub's witty conversations is exactly what this summer needs.

Millie's favorite character was the much loved feline, Iggy Pop.

Everyone needs to reread this. It's just as heartbreaking as it was the first time I read it in 8th grade.

The dialogue was beautiful. But the story was tired and the characters lifeless.

Maybe this would be a good read if you don't live in NYC but love an idealized version of the city. 💁🏻

Reviewsbylola This one got such rave reviews at first but now I am seeing more and more negative reviews. I have it on hold at my library. 8y

*cue "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" by The Darkness*

Cannot wait for everyone to read this! Somehow the all the events since the Big Bang has led to Yoon crafting this beautiful love story. You'll be rooting for Daniel and Natasha until the very end.

The Course of Love: A Novel | Alain de Botton

Rabih and Kirsten's story is oh so very ordinary: love, marriage, children, and adultery. De Botton's examination of their behaviors and emotions that drive them together and apart has the reader contemplating the nature of love and trying not to underline every line.

An important book about the instability and unavailability of housing and its effects on America's poor.

Easy to read yet hard to believe.

Loved the way the story was told through interviews and log entries. I was never sure where the story was heading, but was very interested in the ride. The narrator/wizard of Oz/man behind the curtain is hands down the best character, hope he plays a part in the sequel! 🚀

After reading P&P for the first time last week, I can't get enough of it! This modern retelling is true to the original--witty and fresh! Who knew that the Bennets would be into CrossFit and reality dating shows?

The Girls: A Novel | Emma Cline

Cline captures vulnerability in an everyday, yet jarring way. She focuses on the tired desperation and loneliness of the girls in this cult, rather than the cult leader and that is what makes this stand out from another Manson Murder retellings.

What an entertaining noon on how we can become more original! Grant shows how to creat and champion new ideas through case studies that vary from Warby Parker, suffragettes, and revolutionaries.

Will definitely be telling everyone I work with about this!

An extremely important book.

O'Neill demonstrates rape culture at work and he many violations that come after the initial act and how these violations come from every angles: from her peers, neighbors, and strangers on the Internet.

It's a shame that Lucia Berlin wasn't celebrated before her death; her writing is humorous, gritty, intelligent, and passionate. I had borrowed this from the library but I'm 10/10 going to buying this so I can highlight every word.

The quest to find the Welsh King Glendower is complete but kin fa aren't always what they're made out to be. How will Gamsey and his friends change his fate while also dealing with the corruption and dismantling of Cabeswater? All the character will be missed when the last page is turned.

The art references were the only reason I finished this--and there weren't even that many. The plot made zero sense and the twists were anything but. Hilton tried to do too much and succeed with nothing.

A beautifully written mundane story.
The Vacationers is about keeping up appearances and letting it all out, dealing with the truth and continuing to live in denial, and fighting for what you want (and what you don't).

One of the most intelligent children's books I've read: careful, beautiful, and precise. Savit is able to knit fairytale, folk take, magical realism, historical fiction, AND coming of age together in a story about some of the most curious characters.

Read for Rachel Syme's WLClub. Hatshepsut came alive in this book. Dr.Cooney told her story with grace and a deep knowledge of her subjects, even though she was quite repetitive at times.
