The Outsiders
The Outsiders | SE Hinton
A heroic story of friendship and belonging No one ever said life was easy. But Ponyboy is pretty sure that he's got things figured out. He knows that he can count on his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. And he knows that he can count on his friendstrue friends who would do anything for him, like Johnny and Two-Bit. And when it comes to the Socsa vicious gang of rich kids who enjoy beating up on "greasers" like him and his friendshe knows that he can count on them for trouble. But one night someone takes things too far, and Ponyboy's world is turned upside down... Written over forty-five years ago, The Outsiders is a dramatic and enduring work of fiction. S. E. Hinton's classic story of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was first published. "The Outsiders transformed young-adult fiction from a genre mostly about prom queens, football players and high school crushes to one that portrayed a darker, truer world." The New York Times "Taut with tension, filled with drama." The Chicago Tribune "[A] classic coming-of-age book." Philadelphia Daily News "What it's like to live lonely and unwanted and cornered by circumstance...There is rawness and violence here, but honest hope, too." National Observer A New York Herald Tribune Best Teenage Book A Chicago Tribune Book World Spring Book Festival Honor Book An ALA Best Book for Young Adults Winner of the Massachusetts Children's Book Award

Young Adult Fiction

Grade 8 - End of year

We read this book as a class.

After watching a move, Ponyboy was attacked by a rich group called the Socs. The Socs were the rivals of the Greasers, a poor gang group. The Socs and the Greasers had a fist fight, in order to avenge Ponyboy, which the Greaser's won. Ponyboy and Johnny killed the Soc's leader, so they ran away and hid in a church. The church caught fire killing Johnny in the process.

It‘s hard to imagine not giving this book 5 ⭐️. If I could, I‘d add one star for each main character, one for each heart beat and heart break. Some might wish them hope. I‘d wish them light - light fading in the sunset, light at the end of the tunnel, light in Ponyboy‘s bleach blond hair, lighter burdens, brighter dreams, just light.

I wish I could tell you everything changes, but not much has. We may not label our troubles, but Tulsa is still a place of hard living and sob stories. But every dark day has an element of light to it. For Hinton‘s classic tome, Johnny Cade was that light.

P.S. What are you up to, Tom Cruise?!

Johnny Cade has nothing. Nothing but a set of black, haunting eyes and a band of misfit brothers. But his story changed them all.

I‘ve only read The Outsiders twice in my life. Seen the movie more times than I can count. Having grown up in rural Tulsa, the story hits way too close to home - from the first line! For those who are curious, The Admiral is still there. It was the movie house of my childhood much like Ponyboy‘s.

SamAnne And I still have Kids on my TBR shelf which won the NBA. Plan to read it. Reviews from others re Kids? 6mo

I missed the boat on reading S.E Hinton‘s The Outsiders as a high schooler, but after Episode 56 of my podcast, I‘m now officially caught up! We talk about the pop culture resonance of “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” Hinton‘s fascinating portrayal of masculinity, her journey from (literal) teen to publishing sensation, and the story‘s still relevant representation of marginalized teens. Link to listen in bio!

The outsiders was a book I read a while ago but if I recall I really enjoyed it. For those who enjoy realistic fiction and from a point of vue from the mid sixties this is a novel for you. It tells the story of friendship, hardship, gangs, and what life was like in the sixties. I highly recommend the outsiders for anyone who enjoys classics or simply an enjoyable, thought provoking read.

I find it such a privilege to teach high school students and to influence them to love reading as much as I do. Cannot wait to teach my year 8 kiddies this novel for the next 10 weeks and compare it to the film! Watch this space! #englishteachersoflitsy

Curiouser_and_curiouser I studied this in high school too, and as some of the actors were all part of the brat pack at the time I was wrapped, but i did love the story too. Theres so much more to learn when you have to break it down instead of just reading it through once. Great novel! 7mo

Humor for today:

My student comes up to me right before his final exam, and says, “You know the Socs, in The Outsiders? Apparently it‘s pronounced ‘Soashes‘...”

I read the entire story out loud in class, and I‘d been calling them the “Socks” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Struggles of reading an unfamiliar word in a book 😂

rubyslippersreads I always knew how to pronounce it, because that‘s what we called the snooty kids in school, but until I read this book, I never thought about how to spell it. 😊 7mo
