The Mothers
The Mothers: A Novel | Brit Bennett
A dazzling debut novel from an exciting new voice, The Mothers is a surprising story about young love, a big secret in a small communityand the things that ultimately haunt us most. Set within a contemporary black community in Southern California, Brit Bennett's mesmerizing first novel is an emotionally perceptive story about community, love, and ambition. It begins with a secret. "All good secrets have a taste before you tell them, and if we'd taken a moment to swish this one around our mouths, we might have noticed the sourness of an unripe secret, plucked too soon, stolen and passed around before its season." It is the last season of high school life for Nadia Turner, a rebellious, grief-stricken, seventeen-year-old beauty. Mourning her own mother's recent suicide, she takes up with the local pastor's son. Luke Sheppard is twenty-one, a former football star whose injury has reduced him to waiting tables at a diner. They are young; it's not serious. But the pregnancy that results from this teen romanceand the subsequent cover-upwill have an impact that goes far beyond their youth. As Nadia hides her secret from everyone, including Aubrey, her God-fearing best friend, the years move quickly. Soon, Nadia, Luke, and Aubrey are full-fledged adults and still living in debt to the choices they made that one seaside summer, caught in a love triangle they must carefully maneuver, and dogged by the constant, nagging question: What if they had chosen differently? The possibilities of the road not taken are a relentless haunt. In entrancing, lyrical prose, The Mothers asks whether a "what if" can be more powerful than an experience itself. If, as time passes, we must always live in servitude to the decisions of our younger selves, to the communities that have parented us, and to the decisions we make that shape our lives forever.

The character development is what really drives this plot. The narration style was different, told from the perspective of women in the church, following the story of three teenagers. This book included several hard topics (suicide, molestation, domestic violence), which I wasn‘t expecting; but they were handled well. Overall, an enjoyable read 3.5/5 ⭐️

limada I have this in my TBR but it keeps getting pushed back in lieu of other things that seem more pressing. Happy to hear the character is what drives it forward as that's the main thing that keeps me involved in a book. 5mo

I didn't expect to love this as much as I did. It's such a beautifully written story. It's sweet and heartbreaking and so real. I could have done without the voices of ' the mothers' but they didn't detract from the story.

OMG this novel was amazingly well written!! I couldn‘t stop reading it once I started. Nadia‘s story just leapt off the pages and into my mind. Always searching for something but never quite finding it. The heartbreak of the loss of what you think is your first love. The intertwining of everyone‘s lives via the church

1) The tagged book (still, but I am enjoying it), Fullmetal Alchemist Vol. 19

2) It is hard to say because I didn't love either book I read this month and I can't really separate different volumes of manga.

If I had to choose, I would say Fullmetal Alchemist Vol 18 because it has my favorite scene with the Colonel and the Lieutenant (who I ship with every fiber of my being).

3) The Princess and the Fangirl

I loved Brit Bennett's characters in this novel; she manages to write three people who you can both sympathize with deeply and also want to shake as their decisions start to impact those around them. I got so attached to Nadia at the beginning that I was reluctant to move away from her character but I soon ended up feeling the same way about Aubrey and even Luke. The Greek chorus of "the Mothers" was interesting, and will keep me thinking...

I really enjoyed this small but powerful book about growing pains, mistakes, secrets, and a woman's right to choose what she does with her body (and how that choice impacts her and those around her, even years after).

Reggie I know this was supposed to be a book mainly about women but I really enjoyed Luke‘s point of view in here. I loved this book. 14mo

Was disappointed when I guessed what would happen did happen halfway through the story.
Felt like the ending could have provided a little more insight, but then again I think the author was playing off of the name of the book with the way she ended the story.
Not bad, worth reading once.

I really liked this book. The main character (Nadis's) growth and development as a person really showed through. You can't help but feel sympathetic towards the situation that she is going through with the loss of her mother. However, because you are sympathetic towards her situation it also makes you question the decisions that she makes as an adult. Is what she did to her best friend make her a bad person? Is she a bad person?

I have mixed feelings about this... I see how some see it as problematic, but societies where everyone is treated fairly are called Utopias, and this is not a book about one of those. I think Robert Turner was my favorite character.
