Do Unto Otters by Laurie Keller is such a great book to read with preschoolers and kindergarteners to teach them about manners and being kind to your neighbors. I would definitely use this as a read aloud to ensure understanding in the students. ESOL strategy number 8 would be what I would use to continually monitor comprehension with the students. The UDL I would use is 3.2 to teach and actually use the manners #ucflae3414sub18 Bigfoot.com

JayaJ I haven‘t read this book, but I definitely want to look into this book. I think book will be very entertaining to young kids and may even be funny. 6y
emilybanne I love that! I haven't read it yet but it seems like a really cute book. 6y

Holes | Louis Sachar
post image
Pickpick

Holes by Louis Sachar was such a great novel about a boy named Stanley yelnats who has bad luck based on a curse from his great- great grandfather. He is sent to camp green lake where he has to dig holes 5 feet wide and 5 feet deep. I would suggest to middle schools to read this book in a literature circle to be able to discuss the story with other students. UDL I would use is 2.2 and 2.4 to understand the language used and promote understanding!

Kaelya The ESOL strategy I would pick would be 38 to assign to the group short reading to make it easier for ell students and not making them overwhelmed. #ucflae3414sub18 louissachar.com 6y
DrSpalding Late submission. 38 is an excellent EL strategy. 6y

She Persisted | Chelsea Clinton

Pickpick

She persisted by Chelsea Clinton illustrated by Alexandra Bolger is such a good nonfiction book for young girls, it gives them the idea that they can do anything they want in their life no matter what obstacles are in their way! I would have the students listen to a read aloud to really make sure students are understanding the content of the book. The UDL I would use Is 2.1 and 2.2 to make sure the students are understanding the content of the

Kaelya Story. The ESOL strategy I would pick would be 5 and 8 to explain the stories information #ucflae3414sub18 (edited) 6y
DrSpalding This is a biography. It is an excellent anthology or collection of biographies that elementary age students should hear. 6y

If you give a pig a pancake by Laura Numeroff illustrates by Felicia Bond is a hilarious story about a pig that is all over the place changing what she wants every minute but coming back to the same ending as when she started. I would use this as storytelling, like I did in class. The students could create a circle and fill in the blanks for each thing the pig does. This book is fantasy because obviously pigs don‘t eat pancakes and hang wallpaper.

Kaelya The UDL I would use for this book is 7.2 because students may be able to relate to themselves as all over the place like the pig or may be able to relate to the little girl if theyre sibling does things like the pig does! I would use number 8 for ESOL because of the images you can create to describe what is happening in the story. #ucflae3414sub18 lauranumeroff.com 6y
Gabylaurel10 This book is so good! It would be great for story telling!! 6y
SierraC I loved this book as kid! I know this would be a great RA :) 6y

Just Me and My Puppy | Mercer Mayer
post image
Pickpick

Just me and my puppy is such a cute story they shoes kids what goes into taking care of a dog, I would tend to lean to that being the main idea, the words say he‘s doing really good things but the images are showing something else. I would use this as story telling and have the students tell the story and use images that depict the same idea from the images in the book. The ESOL strategy I would use is 6 to make sure students are understanding

Kaelya The story and the meaning behind the words and pictures. The UDL I would use 9.3 to create a self assignment and reflection of is they ever had a dog that did things like in the story or if they would want a dog to do the things in the story. #ucflae3414sub18 mercermayer.com 6y

The city of ember is a fantastic novel written by Jeanne DuPrau and is the first of the books of ember series! I loved reading the book because it is about a post-apocalyptical city in modern day and was one of the winners of the Sunshine State Young Reader award. This is a science fiction book so some students might really love it and some might hate the thought but I would definitely recommend doing a literature circle with this book so students

Kaelya Can see how other students feel about this book and the view point they may have to see if there was something they missed or didn‘t understand! I do strongly believe that students should be given a wide range of novels to find which genre they like the most. The ESOL Strategies I would put into place would be 2 and 3 since classmates will be working together. And UDL I would use 7.2 to give everyone in the group a voice and opinion. 6y

Wonder | R. J. Palacio
post image
Pickpick

Wonder is a great RF novel by R.J Palacio. I loved doing the literature circle on this book in class and would recommend teachers to have this be a lit circle book for their classroom, I feel like elementary students, middle school students and adults alike would enjoy this novel for its teaching kindness aspect. I would have my ELL‘s use strategy 1, 2 and 3 when doing their lit circle. And the UDL I would use for the LC would be 9.1 to promote

Kaelya The beliefs and expectations of the teacher when working in groups. This novel is also a New York Times Best Seller and a major motion picture! wonderthebook.com #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y
prissy.mooney I loved this book! So emotional but very good message and theme throughout the novel 6y
DrSpalding Literature circles are probably the best teaching strategy for this particular book. You want to talk about it with others. 6y

Where the Wild Things Are | Maurice Sendak
post image
Pickpick

Where the Wild Things are is a great RF picture book that won the Caldecott honor award. I say RF because many people believe that Max went to sleep and dreamt of the place where the wild things are when we went into his room because his food was right outside his door and it was still hot. This book is written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak and would be a great book to do a RA with your class if they are younger and have them do comprehension

Kaelya Questions. UDL 3.3 is going with my theme of comprehension by guiding information processing and visualization. 3.2 would also be great because it highlights patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. ESOL strategies could be 14 to make the comprehension easier for ELLs by speaking slower. Maurice Sendak doesn‘t have a website. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y
ATejada Believe it or not I have never read the book! I‘ve only seen the film adaptation that wasn‘t so great 😕 Adding this to my stack! Thanks for sharing 6y

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a great RF book for students age 8 and up but I feel personally it‘s more suited for middle school students because of the content. The story is written as if it were a diary by Gregory about his day to day life in middle school. This book would be perfect for students to IR in middle school reading. The students would be able to really connect with this story because they are going through the same things daily.

Kaelya While reading the book students can write a reflection of the story and how they relate to it. The UDL is 3.1 to activate background knowledge, 3.2 to highlight the relationships in the story and 7.2 to hone in on the relevance of the book. The ESOL strategy I would use in the classroom would be 6 to make sure the students are comprehending the story correctly. #ucflae3414sub18 wimpykid.com 6y
Erothert I read this book and I like the idea of having students write a reflection regarding how they relate to the book! This is definitely a very relatable book for students this age 6y

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a great P collection by the very talented author and artist Shel Silverstein which won the Outstanding Book award. This would be a great book to use for partner reading or as a read aloud. Each page has a different poem and most have a picture to go along with them. You can use this in class or for homework because the stories are very short. The UDL would be 8.3 bc if the students were to work in small group they would

Kaelya Be able to work collaboratively and foster community by discussing the different poems in the book. The EL strategy would be 2 to promote collaboration amongst the students in the class. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 shelsilverstein.com 6y

Cornelius: A Fable | Leo Lionni
post image
Pickpick

Cornelius is a fable by Leo Lionni and is a great TL. Leo Lionni has told several other fables such as Frederick, which is one of his more well known stories. Having retold several other stories Leo Lionni would be a great author to do an AS on as a class or in small groups. Cornelius is all about a crocodile that can walk standing upright and when the other crocodiles don‘t seem to care he goes off and meets a monkey that teaches him other tricks

Kaelya That he takes back to the other crocodiles to show off and none of them seemed cared so when they thought Cornelius wasn‘t watching they attempted the new tricks. I would use UDL 7.2 to make the story relevant since everyone has a talent that not everyone can do and this story shows that. The ESOL strat I would use is 4 for the same reason I would you UDL 7.2, to make it important to the students. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 (edited) 6y

Waiting | Kevin Henkes
post image
Pickpick

Waiting by Kevin Henkes is a great F picture book about five toys who are happily waiting for something to happen. Each toy is waiting for something different. The bear is waiting for the wind, the pig is waiting for the rain and the rabbit is just looking out the window waiting for something, anything to happen, he is just happy waiting. This book is great for RA in pre-k and kindergarten because it is very low level. (Continue in comment)

Kaelya Since waiting is a huge part of children‘s lives this would be a good book to read aloud to students. A fun activity for this can be found on Kevin Henkes‘ actual website kevinhenkes.com it is a matching memory game which is easy and fun for students that are younger. You could use ESOL strat 1 and ask questions while reading the book to make sure the students understand what the book is about. (Continue) 6y
Kaelya For the UDL I would use 7.2 to make it relevant to the children since waiting is a huge part of their young lives. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y

Owen | Kevin Henkes

Owen by Kevin Henkes is a Caldecott honor book and is wonderful for teaching students about compromising. Owen loves his blanket “Fuzzy” and brings it everywhere but Owen is getting older and his parents, and Mrs. Tweezers, think he needs to get rid of it. They tried many things but Owen didn‘t like any of them, finally his mom came up with a great idea; to cut Fuzzy into small pieces and have them as handkerchiefs. (Continued in comments)

Kaelya This would be a great NF for PR so students can work collaboratively. The ESOL strategies could be 20 and 3. The UDL Guidelines 2.1, 2.2, and 3.1. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 https://kevinhenkes.com/ (edited) 6y

Oh, The Places You‘ll Go by Dr. Seuss is a great F book for RA in kindergarten and even beyond. This book is very motivational for people of all ages, it gives students and adults the courage to do whatever they put their minds to and go wherever they want. I love the powerful message Dr. Seuss is conveying in the book. This book hasn‘t won any awards but it won the hearts of many people and is a beloved children‘s book.

Kaelya The ESOL Strategy that aligns with this book is 15 to emphasize the meaning behind the story. The UDL Guidelines for this book are 9.1, 2.1, and 7.2 #UCFLAE3414SuB18 https://wordchallenge.seussville.com/ (edited) 6y

One Crazy Summer | Rita Williams-Garcia

One crazy summer is a great age of novel written by Rita Williams-Garcia. It has won so many words that I can‘t fit them all in one cover, these awards include the Newbery and many others. The book focuses on three young girls who travel across the US to meet their mother, who is not what they expected. The book is set in the 1960s and their mom is a member of the black panthers.(Continue in comments)

Last Stop on Market Street written by Matt de la Pena illustrated by Christian Robinson is a great RF picture book for kids. The story is about Cj and his grandmother as they travel by bus from church to a soup kitchen. This book teaches kids an important lesson; to look for the beauty in everything. The ESOL STRAT could be 3 to encourage students to talk about something beautiful they saw that day after an RA in Kindergarten. (Cont in comments)

Kaelya This picture book won several awards, the Caldecott, Coretta Scott and the Newbery. The UDL that matches best with this is 7.2 because it optimizes relevance and gives value to the story. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 #findingwinnie #Scholastic http://mattdelapena.com/ (edited) 6y

Finding Winnie | Lindsay Mattick

This is a wonderful B, great for students so they know that the most famous bear was actually real! Finding Winnie is about the story of the bear Winnie, that was found by Harry Colebourn a veterinarian and brought her with him to tend to the horses of WWI he named her Winnie after Winnipeg, his hometown. The story is told by Harry‘s great granddaughter to her son, after they cross the ocean Winnie moves to the London Zoo where..

Kaelya He meets the real life boy, Christopher Robin, Winnie became the inspiration of the worlds most famous bear.. Winnie the Pooh. This story is a true story about Winnie and was a New York Times best selling book and won the Caldecott award for the illustrations. This book would be great for GR in the classroom grades k - 3 to help students understand and enjoy the book. (edited) 6y
