Caldecott Honor
This book tells the story of 5 toys who are all waiting on something as they watch the world change around them through the window.
This book is a great jumping off point for students to discuss changes in the seasons weather, and a fun discussion on what they‘d be waiting for in the window.
“They were happy together, waiting to see what would happen next.”

The part of the story where it talks about each toy having “their moment“ is a great part for students to see that they can be happy while their friends are enjoying whatever brings them joy and at some point, they will have their moment as well.

“Waiting“ by Kevin Henkes was published in 2015 and is a Caldecott Honor book for 2016. It is about different toys that all wait on a windowsill for different things to happen outside. They come across each thing that brings them joy and even have visitors. The theme is all about being patient and everyone is brought joy by different things- waiting is key! The illustrations are timeless and soft but bring so much to the story.

Review:
This book has a simple story following 5 animals/toys waiting. Each one has their favorite thing to wait for and some just are happy with their friends. The illustrations are cute and follow along well.
Blurb:
This book would be good for a k-2 classroom. Students can infer what they think about different parts and is good for conversing after,

I have 6 bursting bookshelves. Two are for my "read but want to keep" books. The other four are overflowing with tbr books. This shelf is in my living room and is where I put the ones I want to get to soon. The other 3 shelves are fairly organized alphabetically, while this one is chaos. All together I probably have about 700 tbr books. ?

This MF-S book is ideal for younger students and can be told with little puppets or cutouts. This book is about toys sitting and waiting on a window watching the world happen while they wait to be played with. UDL 1.1 would be good here with a fun way to display the story and EL 17.

Nrossi This book is also a Caldecott Honor and Theodore Seuss Geisel Honor book 3y
DrSpalding You need a bit more detail regarding how the resource supports the EL/UDL you have identified. Make sure you include what the principles and strategies are and how they are enhanced using this book. 3y

Waiting is a MF picture book written and illustrated by Kevin Henkes. It is the story of patiently waiting for things to happen, there is a great emphasis on imaginative play. Such a cute story that would be great for S with cute puppets or even felt cutouts. This book is winner of the Caldecott Honor and is a Geisel Honor Book. #UCFLAE3414SU20

Ameyer32 This book would be great to incorporate ESOL strategy 17, provide contextual support through visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language or facial expressions while story telling. I would also use UDL 1.1 offer ways of customizing and displaying information which goes along with the props from storytelling.

DrSpalding In the video I provided of past students storytelling examples, this was the third in the clip. The student used a program called procreate to have actual images moving in the background in the window. It was phenomenal. Your UDL/English learner strategy aligns well with storytelling. Creating story maps and comprehension. 4y

In this F. “Waiting” by Kevin Henkes is a sweet book about toys sitting on a windowsill waiting to be played with. It won both the Caldecott + Geisel Honor in 2016. I think it would be fun to teach as a S, having the different toys and scene for each toy to tell the story!

I found a great resource to use along with the book, it has discussion questions + activities! https://www.teachingbooks.net/media/pdf/HarperCollins/Waiting_2015.pdf

Brennap UDL principle 5.2- Using multiple tools for construction and composition is supported by reading the book as a storytelling and using the activities provided! Along with the ESOL strategy 17. Which says “ Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language, and facial expressions.” 4y
deiacovab This book looks super cute. I like the idea of using it for storytelling! Do you think you‘ll pick this one for our storytelling this semester? I‘m still trying to pick mine 4y
DrSpalding This would be an excellent book to use for storytelling. This award winner along with many of his others belongs in your classroom library. 4y

Waiting is a F, Caldecott and Geisel award winning book by Kevin Henkes about a stuffed animal pig, bear, puppy, and rabbit waiting by a window for something to happen. This is a great book to teach kids about patience. I think this book would be good as a RA. This video is a good example of a RA of this book: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=89bZv8tEOx4

Mwinship The EL strategy 12 about teaching language and content and the UDL guideline 2.3 about supporting decoding of text properly align with this RA and book. #UCFLAE3414F19 4y
abbie-cadabbie The fact that this story is both a Geisel and Caldecott winner intrigues me! I will definitely be picking this up, as well as adding it to my classroom library in the future! Using this book as a RA to teach students about patience is definitely a great idea! 4y
DrSpalding While I like the idea of having YouTube read aloud‘s, I also want to emphasize that the children need to hear you reading to them. Nice alignment to universal design and English learner strategies. (edited) 4y

I don't know if I'm really a fan of this book just because it's so repetitive about the animals waiting for whatever it is that they're waiting on. I guess it teaches children to have patience, though.

This fantasy fiction book by Kevin Henkes was a Theodore Suess Giles Honor Book and Caldacott Honor. I think this book would be great for kindergarten or 1st grade. I think that it teaches kids that if you want something sometimes you have to wait for it to happen. I feel like this book also teaches kids not to judge someone by their outside appearances because you never know what is going on with them on the inside. #ucflae3414f19

kradebaugh https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5735. The UDL's I chose were 2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols and 1.3 Other alternatives for visual information.

Waiting by Kevin Henkes is a great F picture book about five toys who are happily waiting for something to happen. Each toy is waiting for something different. The bear is waiting for the wind, the pig is waiting for the rain and the rabbit is just looking out the window waiting for something, anything to happen, he is just happy waiting. This book is great for RA in pre-k and kindergarten because it is very low level. (Continue in comment)

Kaelya Since waiting is a huge part of children‘s lives this would be a good book to read aloud to students. A fun activity for this can be found on Kevin Henkes‘ actual website kevinhenkes.com it is a matching memory game which is easy and fun for students that are younger. You could use ESOL strat 1 and ask questions while reading the book to make sure the students understand what the book is about. (Continue) 6y

Waiting, by Kevin Henkes, is a Caldecott honor and Geisel honor picture book I would use for RA, S, or AS. This book tells a story of 5 toys sitting on a window sill waiting for different things that bring them happiness. Henkes beautifully illustrates what it‘s like every day to be a toy on a window sill looking out and getting new visitors. It‘s a cute quick story to share with your class! #UCFLAE3414SP18

Waiting by Kevin Henkes is a modern fantasy (F) which won two (2) award Caldecott honor and Theodore Seuss Geisel honor. This book was cute and short, it filled me with wonder about the characters waiting for something.... This book demonstrate the patience these characters had and most likely teachers need to be teachers on the daily bases. Teaching strategy (S) and Shared Reading (SR) would go well with this storybook.

Hervela.L UDL 8.3 Foster collaboration and community, this will allow students to discuss their prior encounters with the lack of patience or the patience they contribute to a situation. ESOL strategy 3. Encourage self-talk (positive thinking) Will also allows students to comment on this same situation and what they could of did differently to display better patiences. #UCFlae3414sp18 6y
