119 posts | 116 read | 52 to read
Chelsea Clinton introduces tiny feminists, mini activists and little kids who are ready to take on the world to thirteen inspirational women who never took no for an answer, and who always, inevitably and without fail, persisted. Throughout American history, there have always been women who have spoken out for what's right, even when they have to fight to be heard. In early 2017, Senator Elizabeth Warren's refusal to be silenced in the Senate inspired a spontaneous celebration of women who persevered in the face of adversity. In this book, Chelsea Clinton celebrates thirteen American women who helped shape our country through their tenacity, sometimes through speaking out, sometimes by staying seated, sometimes by captivating an audience. They all certainly persisted. She Persisted is for everyone who has ever wanted to speak up but has been told to quiet down, for everyone who has ever tried to reach for the stars but was told to sit down, and for everyone who has ever been made to feel unworthy or unimportant or small. With vivid, compelling art by Alexandra Boiger, this book shows readers that no matter what obstacles may be in their paths, they shouldn't give up on their dreams. Persistence is power. This book features: Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, Clara Lemlich, Nellie Bly, Maria Tallchief, Claudette Colvin, Ruby Bridges, Margaret Chase Smith, Sally Ride, Florence Griffith Joyner, Oprah Winfrey, Sonia Sotomayor--and one special cameo.

“She Persisted” was written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. This is an incredible NF B book that would work perfectly as an RT! The book contains 13 vignettes of strong women who “PERSISTED” and changed the world even when people told them they couldn‘t do it. It would be amazing for students to take the roles of each individual woman and perform the RT as a class. Highly recommend! Such an incredible book! #ucflae3414su20

Viviannef I can‘t forget to mention that this book is a NY Times Best Seller! UDL Principle 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity. ESOL strategy 16 Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities. Having students reading, speaking, and listening goes hand in hand with the RT. 4y
Viviannef This resource provides templates for students to write their own autobiography for both boys and girls as well as including their own drawings of themselves to go with it! Such a great way for students to feel empowered. http://www.booknerdmommy.com/persisted-mini-biography-activity-idea/ 4y

This NF picturebook shares the stories of 13 women who “persisted,“ from Helen Keller to Ruby Bridges. These women changed the narrative of what a woman can do and be, no matter the starting place. It's an inspiring book to share with the class through CR. One UDL & EL strategy is: Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance (5.3) and 4. Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. #UCFLAE3414SP20

With Woman‘s History Month coming up,March 1st, I thought this would be a great book to post. This book won the Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People Award. It explores 13 American Women who persisted on through hardships. This NF, Biography is a great way to inspire perseverance among students in the classroom. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Tabitha_H A UDL principle that coincides well with this book would be 2.1, Clarifying vocabulary and symbols. There are many opportunities to explore unknown words through out the text. An ESOL strategy that could be used would be #10, Think,Pair,Share. The text encourages conversations about perseverance, and speaking up when told to be quiet. 5y

This is a NF book by Chelsea Clinton, illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. It is an inspiring book talking about 13 women that have persisted throughout their struggles and of everyone telling them no. She Persisted, written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger, is a eye-opening and inspiring B PB that could be a great S book for your elementary classrooms. Clinton goes over thirteen strong women who helped shape our world into the world we have today. These women persisted and never let anyone tell them they could not do it. Read along and learn about these incredible women! #UCFLAE3414F19

Camrynm The EL strategy I would use would be 24: Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. In this book, these women come from all over the world, so maybe one of your students is from the same country as one of these 13 women and can share facts about their country. The UDL principle I would use would be 1.3: Offer alternatives for visual information. Students can watch videos on each country. 5y

She Persisted is a B picture book written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. This book would be best as a RT because students can act out the parts of the different 13 women that have their stories told in this book. Their stories are about no matter how much opposition they had, they kept going and pushing for what they believed in. #UCFLAE3414F19

katiehamlin The EL strategy I would use with this book is 4. “Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge” is good for this book because you can discuss what students already knew things about some of the women mentioned in this book. It will help them connect to the book more and comprehend more of it. 5y
katiehamlin The UDL principle I would use is 3.1. “Activate or supply background knowledge” is good for this book because it will help students to connect to it more and help them comprehend what they are reading. The resource I would use for this book is https://westonwoods.scholastic.com/products/westonwoods/study_guides/3031-She-Pe... . This is a link to a good lesson plan you can use in a K-3 classroom. 5y

Kaelya Story. The ESOL strategy I would pick would be 5 and 8 to explain the stories information #ucflae3414sub18 (edited) 6y
DrSpalding This is a biography. It is an excellent anthology or collection of biographies that elementary age students should hear. 6y

What a great HF book for your classroom library! This is such a great way for your students to learn about important women who made a huge difference in this world. Who wouldn‘t want to read a book featuring Oprah Winfrey and other amazing women? I read that this book is great for third grade but in my honest opinion I think it is great for all ages. I read this book for the first time last semester and loved every page!

AmyPerezCubas Written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger! A great activity for this assignment is have your students write about an important woman in their own lives! 6y
DianaHerrera I think that‘s a great idea to have the students write about a woman who is important in their lives. Try to find a link that has that kind of activity and add it to this post @AmyPerezCubas 6y
AmyPerezCubas For sure! I was just gonna finish it up later :) thank you!!! 6y

This biography, She Persisted by Chelsea Clinton, is the #1 NY Times Bestseller and would be a great book to GR. Chelsea Clinton wrote this book to introduce students to thirteen inspirational women learned to take on the world no matter how small these feminists are👩🏽👩🏼👩🏻

DianaHerrera Just below the summary of this book in the link above is an activity where students can create their very own biography inspired by She Persisted. There are different activity sheets on how the students can create their biography for both boys and girls! 6y
DianaHerrera UDL 9.1 aligns with this lesson because students are to promote expectations and their beliefs to boost their motivation/make a change. ESOL 28: Providing biographies of significant women/men of the world shows how one person can make a difference in the world no matter how small. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 #ClassroomLibrary (edited) 6y
emilybanne Love this book and it has a great meaning. I love the activities and want it for my library! 6y
DrSpalding I love the #ClassroomLibrary and I like the idea of mini biographies based on the amazing females presented in this text. EL 28 is perfect, obviously for this book. (edited) 6y

A little audio gardening tonight! I finished the Audiobook It‘s What I Do, then listened to this, then started a Grisham audio. There was a pile of beans to pick!

Great inspiration NF biography book. A great way to introduce students to some Great women of our American History.March is National Women‘s History month, this will be a great book to read to the class . For classroom activity , we will do a “Alphabet Organizer”. For every letter of the alphabet the class will add a historical name or any category previously chosen. It will be interesting to see if all the letters will be filled.

AmyPerezCubas I love this book! It so inspiring and very important for students to read. I learned so much when I read this book. This should be in every classroom‘s library! 6y
ERodriguez Agree! I like how it gave a summary of so many great women in our history. 6y
DrSpalding Proof your work and be sure it includes all of the necessary details. 6y
