She Persisted | Chelsea Clinton
103 posts | 101 read | 48 to read
Chelsea Clinton introduces tiny feminists, mini activists and little kids who are ready to take on the world to thirteen inspirational women who never took no for an answer, and who always, inevitably and without fail, persisted. Throughout American history, there have always been women who have spoken out for what's right, even when they have to fight to be heard. In early 2017, Senator Elizabeth Warren's refusal to be silenced in the Senate inspired a spontaneous celebration of women who persevered in the face of adversity. In this book, Chelsea Clinton celebrates thirteen American women who helped shape our country through their tenacity, sometimes through speaking out, sometimes by staying seated, sometimes by captivating an audience. They all certainly persisted. She Persisted is for everyone who has ever wanted to speak up but has been told to quiet down, for everyone who has ever tried to reach for the stars but was told to sit down, and for everyone who has ever been made to feel unworthy or unimportant or small. With vivid, compelling art by Alexandra Boiger, this book shows readers that no matter what obstacles may be in their paths, they shouldn't give up on their dreams. Persistence is power. This book features: Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, Clara Lemlich, Nellie Bly, Maria Tallchief, Claudette Colvin, Ruby Bridges, Margaret Chase Smith, Sally Ride, Florence Griffith Joyner, Oprah Winfrey, Sonia Sotomayor--and one special cameo.

This is a nonfiction book about the power of Women- women who speak up for their rights and what is right. The book includes very famous feminists who have spoken up for their rights and defended themselves and other women. This book is presented in a clear way that young children can understand. The author uses sources and facts and they are accurate.

This is a NF book by Chelsea Clinton, illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. It is an inspiring book talking about 13 women that have persisted throughout their struggles and of everyone telling them no. It talks about how these women have helped shape our country, spoken out for what is right. It is so empowering, something I cannot wait to add to my classroom library. #ucflae3414f19

maciforster I think this would be great for RT as students will be able to act as these women and learn about them through stepping into their shoes. Here is a website about a basic activity that you can use to learn about main ideas: https://www.teachingbooks.net/clp.cgi?master_id=55160&lf_id=1 4w

She Persisted, written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger, is a eye-opening and inspiring B PB that could be a great S book for your elementary classrooms. Clinton goes over thirteen strong women who helped shape our world into the world we have today. These women persisted and never let anyone tell them they could not do it. Read along and learn about these incredible women! #UCFLAE3414F19

Camrynm The EL strategy I would use would be 24: Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. In this book, these women come from all over the world, so maybe one of your students is from the same country as one of these 13 women and can share facts about their country. The UDL principle I would use would be 1.3: Offer alternatives for visual information. Students can watch videos on each country. 4w

She Persisted is a B picture book written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. This book would be best as a RT because students can act out the parts of the different 13 women that have their stories told in this book. Their stories are about no matter how much opposition they had, they kept going and pushing for what they believed in. #UCFLAE3414F19

katiehamlin The EL strategy I would use with this book is 4. “Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge” is good for this book because you can discuss what students already knew things about some of the women mentioned in this book. It will help them connect to the book more and comprehend more of it. 4w
katiehamlin The UDL principle I would use is 3.1. “Activate or supply background knowledge” is good for this book because it will help students to connect to it more and help them comprehend what they are reading. The resource I would use for this book is https://westonwoods.scholastic.com/products/westonwoods/study_guides/3031-She-Pe... . This is a link to a good lesson plan you can use in a K-3 classroom. 4w

This B picture book written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger tells about 13 American women who changed the world in their own ways. Each page describes a short synopsis of each empowering woman in how they brought their dreams to a reality that changed their lives and encourage women as a population despite hate, challenges, and struggles. #ucflae3414f19

She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World is an amazing HF picture book by Chelsea Clinton! This takes you page by page women by women who brought America a treasure! This book would be GREAT for a RT! I don‘t have a lib to provide but I have from my own experience how fun yo I can preform this book! This is great to use as an introduction to a history lesson or simply a fun way to still incorporate new information! #UCFLAE3414F19

Parts of this book are really sweet and uplifting, and the illustrations are adorable. What bothered me was the bizarre tone she took for a couple entries. The idea that if you want to be more than JUST a US representative AND a US senator, you need to persist is weird. Opening on Harriet Tubman was great until there was the implication that persistence is all anyone needed to escape slavery. There are better books of this type.

MarriedtoMrT I think the struggle to get that refrain in each bio did take away from it. If she could‘ve left it out when it didn‘t flow it would‘ve been stronger. 2y

This lesson plan encourages students to develop critical thinking skills and coping skills (UDL 9.2). I would also be sure to pre define the word persist along with a few other vocabulary words 2y
juliette_kathleen Which would cover EL strategies 31, 36, 3, and 5. #UCFLAE3414SP18 2y

She Persisted: 13 American Women who Changed the World by Chelsea Clinton is a New York Times best seller nonfiction picture book that is perfect to help teach children about powerful and impactful women and not to give up. This book would work well as a read aloud in the classroom to help ensure comprehension.

NicoleCumbo A UDL strategy to go along with this book is strategy 3.1 (activate or supply background knowledge) and an EL strategy would be strategy 4 (link lesson topic to students prior knowledge). Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFJkBSbJe18 is a great read aloud for this book. #ucflae3414sp18 2y

This incredible NF book of collective biographies, tells a short story of 13 American women who never gave up; they persisted! Chelsea Clinton and Alexandra Boiger do an amazing job of combining illustration with factual evidence to show young readers that they too can overcome, because these amazing and diverse women did! Great read for any age level for RA, GR, & my favorite RT. #ucflae3414sp18 UDL: 3.2, 5.3, & 8.3 EL: 4, 5, 12, 14,15, 28, 50

LisaMart This is also a great book to read in class to get students thinking about an influential figure they‘d like to do their own research on. Here is an after reading activity where the students can pick other influential figures and describe how he/she persisted, or you can even change it up and allow the students to write about themselves instead.

paulettevp I also read this book. I love your post because the activity you mentioned would be such a wonderful way to immerse students into a discussion. The book hold so much more than just important women. It can start many conversation just from that umbrella. I think that‘s what ultimately makes it a great book. 2y
AmeliaS21 I chose this for my read aloud! It‘s a fun way to get kids to learn about women in history! Keep up the great work! 2y
Kendallc I think this book is great for the whole class setting and they can get a lot out of it especially with the activity thank you! 2y
KhyaraN I wanted to choose this for my read aloud but ended up with Martins Big Words. Definitely think on adding it to my to read list. It is diverse in the sense of being for girls who are not represented as much. 2y
DrSpalding Specifically, what kind of nonfiction?🙂 2y

She persisted written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. This is a great nonfiction story that tells the story of 13 American women who has paved the way for not on American girls but girls of all nationalities. This is a link that takes to a site that has many fun activities that would be useful in classroom; whether it be for History or English http://www.booknerdmommy.com/persisted-mini-biography-activity-idea/.

BriannaR Some good teaching strategies that would be good are RA, IR, SR, and DR. I would love to do this a a read aloud the most because you can read a person a day and have students do a mini project on that person. The UDL strategy I would use is 7.2 because it'll show students how these 13 women impacted our lives today. ESOL Strategies number 45, 48, and 28. #UCFLAE3414SP18 2y
BriannaR By the way I read that she might be in the process of making a She Persisted 2 2y
DrSpalding I think the sequel is coming out this week! Yes this is nonfiction however it is about 13 women… What is the correct genre? 2y

This is a NF New York Times Best Seller I would use for GR to expand vocabulary, make text to self connections, and learn about famous women in history. She Persisted briefly tells about the lives of 13 famous women and how their persistence made a huge difference in the world. Stories include those of Hellen Keller, Harriet Tubman, Virginia Apgar, and Oprah Winfrey, to name a few. #UCFLAE3414SP18

AndreaG I like that both women who are living and those who have passed are represented in this book. I believe this will help students feel a connection to the book when they hear names like Oprah Winfrey and Sonia Sotomayer, names they may have heard mentioned in their recent past. UDL 3.1 is used in that the text supplies background knowledge. 2y
V.DeQuattro A lot of people chose this book for the read aloud! After hearing some of our classmates talk about this book and reading your post I am really interested in reading it myself! @AndreaG 2y

Noelle5 This is the book I did for my read aloud and also a litsy. This book is awesome! Makes me even more proud to be a woman than I already am! ;) I am glad I purchased it because I will definitely be using it in my future classroom and doing lessons with it. I already read it to my Sunday school kids and I could tell they were inspired and motivated! 2y
ambera This would be a great book to introduce students to powerful women. We here about powerful and successful men all the the time so to include a book that mentions powerful women will be a great read. 2y
Ryanne.H This book is so great for little girls. With so many young girls suffering with low self-esteem, this would be wonderful to show girls some powerful women in our society. Great job! 2y
SadiqaH I like this book. The way you explained and presented this book is great. I will definitely read it. 2y
DrSpalding The new sequel is coming out this week! Search it up online! 2y
AndreaG @DrSpalding I saw it in Target a few days ago and almost snagged it, but bought my boy Where The Wild Things Are instead. I‘m not sure why we never purchased that book when my girls were younger. 2y
AndreaG I would use this book as a RA to lead into history lessons about the figures in this book, letting students do more research with a partner about one of the historical figures and presenting their findings to the class. UDL 3.1, 6.2, 5.1. ELL strategies 32, 42 (edited) 2y
DrSpalding Such a detailed summary, excellent use of Random House quality resources and EL/UDL alignment is spot on! Well done! 2y
AndreaG @DrSpalding Thank you! 2y

#UCFLAE3414SP18 She persisted is a truly inspiring B about 13 amazing women who changed the course of the future. This book would be an excellent addition to any classroom for in my opinion any age. This book inspired me as a woman to persist until I reach my goals, and never met anyone stop me! Some teaching strategies that could work are RA, LC, RT, SR, DR. Assigning roles to your students and having them act

Noelle5 While they read the page of the woman they were assigned too is a really exciting way to present this book to a class! An EL learning strategy could be 3 (encourage self-talk/positive thinking) this is such an inspiring book and it could maybe encourage a struggling EL learning to persist and work as hard as they can for their goals! UDL: 1.2 and 1.3 because you can have the students dress up and act as the women while they read the book! 2y
Noelle5 http://www.booknerdmommy.com/persisted-mini-biography-activity-idea/ is a great article that has some mini biography activities for kids that go along with She Persisted. 2y
SadiqaH This seems an interesting book, I will definitely read this book 2y

She Persisted is an educational children‘s picture book written by Chelsea Clinton and illustrated by Alexandra Boiger. This book is filled with 13 stories about women in history that persisted through various obstacles. The content in She Persisted makes the book fall under the Nonfiction (NF) category. See comments for more information ⬇️ #UCFLAE3414SP18

AmeliaS21 This book is great for a history lesson! I would use this book for grades 3-5. This is a fun book for an interactive read aloud (RA). UDL: 2.1, 2.4 ESOL: 5, 20 I would read this book aloud incorporating different tools such as facial expressions, an influx in voice, hand gestures, and more. I want to make the book come alive for my students. (edited) 2y
AmeliaS21 Below I am providing a link for a site that sells worksheets and informational cards, that go along with the book, for a low price. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/She-Persisted-by-Chelsea-Clinton-318...(KK) 2y
DrSpalding TPT has some valuable resources. You know I appreciate this book greatly as it is one of the choices for the read aloud assignment. You are for filling all aspects of the rubric. Keep going. 2y
DrSpalding Sidenote. I like that the resource includes activities that could work for grades two through five. $5.25 seems a bit steep; I think you could come up with activities for free! 2y

A year ago yesterday, marks the one year anniversary of Elizabeth Warren‘s refusal to be silenced in the Senate. Her brave speech inspired women to celebrate those who have “persevered in the face of adversity”. This NYT best selling biography (B)about 13 American women whom didn‘t give up when the odds were stacked against them. The stories promote a wonderful message to girls/boys that no matter the obstacles, you can overcome. #UCFLAE3414SP18

DrSpalding Be sure to use the rubric as your guide. 2y
JenniferMc This book is great for a social studies lesson in grades 2-5. Included in this link is a great activity to go along with a language arts or social studies lesson. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/She-Persisted-Writing-Activity-and-B... . A UDL 3.1 is assessed in this book by encouraging new lessons to supply appropriate background knowledge of each woman to the students. Teaching strategy: RA (edited) 2y
