Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, nonfiction. A great read aloud not only for class but also before bed time. Tells a brief narrative about saying goodnight to things before you go to bed. My mother read this book to me plenty of times before I went to bed as a child and to this day I remember it. This book would be a good way to end the school day.
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, realistic fiction. This book is about two fifth graders that created an imaginary, exciting land called Terabithia. They go to this to forget about their problems and get away from their other world. This book will be good in a classroom because it talks about friendship, childhood, and being independent. This book will have students using their imagination.
The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill, modern fantasy, John Newberry Medal. This book is about a town that every year leaves a baby to the witch who lives in the forest. The witch in the forest is kind though. The witch in the forest, Xan accepts the babies and delivers the babies to welcoming families on the other side of the forest. LC.
Martin Luther King Jr. by Bonnie Bader, biography. Martin Luther King Jr. helped organized black people across the country so they would be able to vote and have other basic rights. Martin remained calm and honest even though was being threatened. This book is really to the point. I like how this book focuses on just the main idea of Martin Luther. This book would be a great IR or PR
A Wrinkle in Time, science fiction, John Newberry Medal. A high school aged girl, Meg Murry, goes on an adventure with her brother and friend to rescue her father, who is being held on another planet by evil forces. Meg and friends will travel through the fifth dimension to find her dad. This is a great LC book for students to read together and talk about Megs experience and how she has to go through the troubles to find her dad.
The Giver by Lois Lowry, science fiction, brings back some of Jonas (main character) memories, good, bad, violent, joyful, sad, and happy. These memories are filled with color and emotions. The relationship between Jonas and the Giver becomes very strong throughout the book. At first, I did not think the relationship would grow to what it grew to. Great LC book.
Stick and Stone by Beth Ferry, fantasy. This book about “sticking” together is great for a classroom. This book will teach students the value of friendship and what it takes to be in a friendship. The stick and the stone in this book represent friends. Definitely a quick read aloud book. I would suggest this book when there is a behavioral issue with students in the classroom, just to remember that students are supposed to be there for each other.
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, poetry, Michigan Young Readers George G. Stone award. This memorable book is about a boy that needs money, a home, and boat. The generous tree supplies the boy with what the tree can; apples, branches, and trunk. While giving this boy everything he had, the tree was always happy. Great independent reading book, especially for students who do not have a tree like figure in their life!
Freedom in Congo Square by Carol Boston Weatherford, Charlette Zolotow award, nonfiction. In this book we follow slaves doing hard work and waiting for their day of freedom, Sunday. On Sunday they set up an open market, dance, sing, and play music. This was simply a day of freedom; the slaves really cherish and value their Sundays. I actually did a lesson plan for RED 3012 during a previous semester for this book. RA
Ballet for Martha: Making Appalachian Spring by Jan Greenburg, Orbis Pictus award winner, non-fiction. This picture book is about a ballerina will unusual dance steps. All she needs to get music, a set, and dancers. While flipping the pages in this book we see how a ballerina made her dream come true and how she was able to get her performance together.
(Ignore the title from Litsy) Little Roja Riding Hood by Susan Middleton Elya, Pura Belpre Award, Fairy Tale, Ficiton. First off, this book stands out because of its text. The text in this book is English with some Spanish words. The Spanish words in this book were specifically placed so Spanish speakers can follow along and understand somewhat what is going on. This book is very similar to Little Red Robin Hood.
Miss Rumphius by Barbara, American Book Award, Fiction. What a great book. This book is obviously memorable to me, I read this book for a summer reading going in to 2nd grade. This is a story of Miss Rumphius (told by her great niece), a little old lady, and her obligation to do three things: live by the sea, go to faraway places, and make the world a more stunning place.
Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell, historical fiction, National Book Award for Novel. This book tells a story during the Civil War. Scarlett O‘Hare has a hard time coping with her town, Tara, that has fallen apart after the Civil War. Scarlett has several relationships, she is in one that she married for financial purposes. This is definitely a book full of tragedies and depressing moments.
Charlottes Web, the Newberry Award winning book tells an adventurous story about a pig first trying to “fit in” with the other farm animals, and second, trying to not be “food on the dinner table”. Fern is the daughter of the farm owner and is the reason the pig is still alive, she begs her father to let him go. In this book there is plenty of relationships and what I like to call “bonding moments”. I think this is a great RT book.
The Rainbow Fish tells an underwater story about a fish who has many types of beauty based on her scales. Everyone has plenty of unique and special traits that makes who we are today. These traits need to be known and shown, we should not be scared to show all of our scales like Rainbow Fish does. This book would be a great RA book.
Ill Give You the Sun, Printz award winning novel is an interesting book (traditional literature) about fraternal twins that are of course inseparable, until, of course jealousy and misunderstandings. Both are great artist and both struggle with their gender. Noah is gay and Jude is recovering from her first terrible sexual experience at the age of 14. In this book, the story of these twins are told through their perspectives.
When I Was Young in the Mountains is the 1983 Caldecott award winner. This a story about a girl that never wanted to leave her grandparents house in the mountains. This would be a great RA book, espeically for Grandparents Day! The theme of this book is whT family life is about and the simple pleasures of growing up. #UCFLAE3414SP18
The Adventure of Beekle the Unimaginably Friend is the 2015 Caldecott Medal award winner. This is a story about an unimaginably friend on an adventure to find a real friend. The theme of this book is to not give up when you feel lonely and looking for a friend, they will come. In the end, they both realize they were meant to be friends with each other and their lives a lot less lonely. This book would be a great RA book. #UCFLAE3414SP18
