All incoming University of Denver students are reading this discussion of stories and the Native American experience - it's thought provoking and I hope will create perception-challenging conversations.

I don't understand how this was on Time's best 100 novels list. I slogged through 75 pages of self-indulgent misogyny and pettiness before quitting, which I rarely do.

An incredibly well-written example of narrative non-fiction, where Brown brings the story of the 1936 USA men's 8 rowing team to life. I was on the edge of my seat the whole book, even though I knew the outcome already. Highly recommend!

BritneyM They read this for my library book club, but I was given “Prairie City” instead, so I missed out on it and was the only one to read Prairie City! 6y

Just finished this behemoth - it's very well laid out, and I became addicted near the middle as the mystery pieces came together. I wish I hadn't let the length of this deter me for so long!

Caryl I own this one, but haven't gotten to it yet. I think I'd love it, but it's a commitment. 😉 How long did it take you to read it? 8y
Kenz It took me just under three weeks - there were definitely some slower stretches, but I raced through the last three hundred pages or so in maybe 3 days! 8y
Caryl Thanks, @Kenz -- that helps me plan when to read it! 8y

"I propose to take our countrymen's claims of American exceptionalism seriously, which is to say I propose subjecting our country to an exceptional moral standard."

Ellsbeth This is a very thoughtful book. I hope more people read it. 9y
Elsee So many great ideas presented. I just wish the writing style was more teen-friendly. 9y
Cberbs Such a good book. It's hard to believe how much is packed into these pages. 9y

HeatherBookNerd The writing is powerful, intense. It was a real eye opener for me and had me thinking about it long after I'd finished. I think it would be a very good book to read and discuss with older teens. 9y
Spiderfelt This book requires deep thinking, something teens often do better than adults. We need the space and time to digest and reflect on the ideas. 9y
nicolekukral This book is so powerful. Have any of you heard the NPR interview with Coates? It's good. 9y
nicolekukral Also, I read this on the heels of "All American Boys" which is a young adult fictional look at many of the issues in this book. The two books together helped me begin to wrap my brain around the very complex topic of race in America. 9y
KateComeau Listened to this on audio and I loved it. 9y

Margali_Claire I need to read this one. 9y
Procrastireader I started reading this and realized I was not in the right frame of mind. I want to bring my best reader to this. I'm reading _Ghettoside_ right now, tho, which should get me limbered up. 9y
hof1991 Helped inform my views and changed many of them. 9y
gordon That is one deeply relevant book. And the audio version, read by the man himself, is a stunner. 8y

"The whole future - I thought - will be that way, life lives together with the damp odor of the land of the dead, attention with inattention, passionate leaps of the heart along with abrupt losses of meaning. But it won't be worse than the past."

tkmadden this is still weighing on me so heavily. what a loss 9y
Kenz My book club happened to discuss it the night before she died - I'm thankful she wrote such an incredible book, and sad to know there won't be more. 9y
