The Sportswriter | Richard Ford

Frank Bascombe has a younger girlfriend and a job as a sportswriter. To many men of his age, thirty-eight, this would be a cause for optimism, yet Frank feels the pull of his inner despair and especially of his recent losses - his preferred career has ended, his wife has divorced him, and a tragic accident took his elder son. In the course of this Easter weekend, Frank will lose all the remnants of his familiar life, though he will emerge heroic with spirits soaring. This is a magnificent novel that propelled Richard Ford into the first rank of American writers.

2/16/1944 Richard Ford was born. Read a few of his short stories, have not read his Bascombe series, of which this tagged book is the first.I must have a masters or PhD in book accumulation, a little slow on the follow through of actually reading them! 🎂I have a love for these old Vintage Contemporaries!📚

Mehso-so

This book has seen better days. My copy is a mess. And the book itself hasn't aged well. But it's really well written. It's amazing how much things have changed since this was published in 1986.

Anyone else buy books from Goodwill and then donate them back when you're done?

rubyslippersreads I usually put them in Little Free Libraries. 😊 4y

Cinfhen Great review!! I‘m not sure this book would even be published in this day & age. Whiny white men aren‘t much of selling point😜I‘ve yet to read Ford but I hear he‘s a good writer. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Whiny MCs are such a challenge ... great job! 👊🏻📚♥️ 5y
lynneamch Always enjoy reading about Detroit; I grew up nearby. Here's another 5y

Anna40 Funny. I just finished Wildlife by Ford, a book/author I discovered browsing in the library and was looking for other books by him. Your review doesn't make it sound appealing but apparently it's the prequel to Independence Day which is said to be his best novel... if I find it in the library I'll give it a try despite your review :) 4y
andrew61 @Anna40 no i would recommend it Anna, and i have also got independence day somewhere so will definitely read it as some point. I didn't find frank bascombe a particularly likeable character but it is certainly well written. 4y
Anna40 @andrew61 Sorry, Andrew. I made your review sound negative when it isn't. I guess what I wanted to say is: whining men doesn't sound appealing 😁 4y
andrew61 @Anna40 no need, didn't get that impresion ☺ 4y

I loved all the Frank Bascombe books about his life in #thesuburbs between NYC and Philadelphia. #timbittunes

CarolynM This is one I've had on my shelf for ages but never got around to. You've encouraged me to give it a try soon🙂 6y

Blaire @TheKidUpstairs I‘ve read Canada, and have it 4 stars on goodreads but I only vaguely remember it. 😔 I really do have a terrible habit of not remembering the books I‘ve read. In general I really like his writing. 6y
Blaire @CarolynM I hope you like it. I know I liked it enough to also pick up Independence Day and the lay of the land. 6y
TheKidUpstairs @Blaire I do the same thing. I read very quickly but often forget details quickly too! 6y

This book was intriguing. While reading it I found the main character to be pretty boring and uninspiring, and I often did not like his interior monologue. Yet the writing is tremendous, and I realized that the author had created this spot-on character for me to have these feelings about. I ended up liking the book, and I can see why it has received the accolades it has through the years. #MountTBR #192019

I don't understand how this was on Time's best 100 novels list. I slogged through 75 pages of self-indulgent misogyny and pettiness before quitting, which I rarely do.

Fun Friday Photo. I return again and again to Frank Bascombe, whose dreaminess I still relate to all these years after I met him.

BB1958 Frank's experiences are more common than uncommon, as Richard Ford expresses in a well-written story. 8y
Kammbia1 This novel grew on me and I have read all the Frank Bascombe novels. 7y
