The Luminaries
The Luminaries | Eleanor Catton
The bestselling, Man Booker Prize-winning novel hailed as "a true achievement. Catton has built a lively parody of a 19th-century novel, and in so doing created a novel for the 21st, something utterly new. The pages fly."--New York Times Book ReviewIt is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to stake his claim in New Zealand's booming gold rush. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men who have met in secret to discuss a series of unexplained events: a wealthy man has vanished, a prostitute has tried to end her life, and an enormous cache of gold has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely ornate as the night sky.Richly evoking a mid-nineteenth-century world of shipping, banking, and gold rush boom and bust, THE LUMINARIES is at once a fiendishly clever ghost story, a gripping page-turner, and a thrilling novelistic achievement. It richly confirms that Eleanor Catton is one of the brightest stars in the international literary firmament.

#bookreport

Almost done with book 7 of Caesar's Gaul war.
Djinn Patrol was intense. I finished it (60%) today. I couldn't really put it down. It's slow paced, the point of view is truncated and frustrating at first. But when I let go and went with it instead of fighting it, it got me. Right to the last page.
I'm starting Catton's tonight.

Good. The story was good and there was a decent pace to it. Had to read it in two halves as it sometimes dragged so it could have been half it's size to give the story a really good pace.

Eleanor Catton creates an epic story of the New Zealand Gold Rush in her prize winning 2013 book, The Luminaries. It captivated and confused me, as Catton takes many disparate characters and creates a constellation of mystery. Keeps you guessing until the final page!

This is an incredibly dense and complex novel, with a vast and rich cast of characters. It will not be for everyone, and it is not an easy read. It is however, a literary feat and completely deserving of the Man Booker prize.

Have spent the afternoon reading a bit of this #chunkster I got from page 56 to 122! (Which according to Goodreads is 14%) I think is good progress considering it's so dense that I had to refer back a couple of pages every so often just to be able to follow the story which I think I am finally getting!! How are you getting along @Tashreads @Oryx ?

About to start this chunkster as a buddy read with @Birdsong28 and @Oryx IT IS HUGE 😮📖

Birdsong28 I know it's soooo big that's why I suggested a #buddyread as I know that I would give up if I didn't have people supporting me or people to support through it. 😘📚📖 11mo
cariashley So good and perfect for a buddy read! I would have struggled so much without that support! 11mo
Oryx @Tashreads @Birdsong28 How are you both getting on? I'm about 6 hours in (of 28) and I'm flagging a little. Keep losing concentration on it, and so finding it hard to keep track of the story. 11mo
Birdsong28 @oryx @Tashreads I'm only on page 17! I have had a busy week at work so when I have got home I just haven't felt like reading something so dense. I will be reading it more this week hopefully 🤞It is very dense and hard to follow as I have had to go back and re-read passages so I think that is half the issue, but with both of your support I know I will get through it. 😘📚📖 11mo
Tashreads @Birdsong28 @Oryx yes, it is incredibly dense and so many characters! I don‘t know how I would go if it wasn‘t on audio. This would take me months to wade through. However I am intrigued (especially by Anna and Lydia) and cant wait to see how it all comes together. I‘m about 10 hours in. 11mo

Set in 1860s New Zealand, The Luminaries weaves together the world of the gold rush, shipping, banking and others. It also tells the tale of how people decieve others for their own gains. Overall, a long read (830 pages in paperback) but good read. I did get somewhat confused at times on keeping characters' names straight.

Finished! Woo hoo! It only took me most of the year 😂. This is a great book, and I can see why it was awarded the Man Booker Prize, but it is also one that requires a significant time commitment and that should only be read when in the right reading mood. It‘s quite brilliant.

My list of books to finish before the end of 2018 is down to two! It was three, but I‘ve made the decision to shift the finishing of Michener‘s The Covenant to 2019 - it‘s 1200 pages long and I‘m not even at the halfway point yet.

While I‘m not going to formally participate in #24b42019 because I don‘t want to track my reading time, I do plan to do nothing but read from Sat to Tues (minus a trip to the mall with my daughter). 😊

Andrew65 Enjoy your reading time and involvement with the Readathon even if you‘re not tracking the time. The most important think over those days is to have fun reading and let us know what you are reading. Your decision about The Covenant seems a very wise decision! 13mo
Melissa_J @Andrew65 I‘ll take part in the reading portion of the Readathon 😊 The Covenant is a heavy tome. It‘s a great book, but the font is small and dense. It requires more time to read than I have to spare! 13mo

After a rough day yesterday (someone abandoned a dog in my carport, the dog knocked my phone out of my hands and shattered the screen and threw up in my car 😩) I‘m so tempted to call in sick and stay home with all this loveliness above. Hoping for a smoother Friday 😊

scripturient Oh no, poor you! Hope today will be better. 1y

For the first time in over a year, I have only one library book checked out*. It is surreal. Vivent les #vacancesfrancaises !

*I should say one physical book. Don‘t worry, I have a zillion and a half ebooks through #hoopla and #Libby— I won‘t run out of travel reading 😉

Pickpick

So much fun! I never would have thought I could be this sad to see an 830 page book come to an end, but it's true. Catton's storytelling powers are exceptional- so many memorable characters intersect in the 19th century New Zealand boomtown of Hokitika. She is also a master of several genres, even if this lives in a lit-fic frame: a grand mystery that seamlessly delves into fantasy and romance. I can't stop picking it back up to reread sections 😃

Billypar I know it's late to finish my first #makemereadit selection but I hope to move through the next one more quickly! @TheReadingMermaid 1y

saresmoore You are the only person who has made me want to read this! Great review! 1y
Billypar @saresmoore Thanks! I only read 1-2 chunksters a year, tops. I'm too slow a reader to do more, and even the ones I like I'm usually more than ready to move on when I'm done. This was different- hope you enjoy it too! 1y
Leftcoastzen Need to read It! Mountain ⛰ TBR! 1y
Billypar @Leftcoastzen I hear you- choosing the next book is like being pulled in 50 different directions at once. This one is for when you're looking to lose yourself in one world for awhile and forget everything else. 1y
batsy What @saresmoore said! I've been sort of vaguely interested in this but not *really* all that keen. Until now. Fab review 👍🏽 1y
BarbaraBB So glad you liked it. Excellent review. I felt the same! 1y
Billypar @batsy Thank you! Glad I can nudge others towards this, though I do think it makes sense to be extra cautious to pick up members of the 700+ page count club. And certainly not right after Dostoevsky 😀 1y
Billypar @BarbaraBB Thanks! It wasn't what I was expecting but I think I liked it all the more for that reason. 1y
LeahBergen Nice review! I really enjoyed this one, as well. 1y
Centique I‘m so glad you liked it - I really loved this but I struggle to get other people to continue when they find the first half a little baffling. I‘ll read it again one day, I‘ve never felt so immersed in a Victorian gold mining town. 1y
Billypar @LeahBergen Thanks! ☺️ 1y
Billypar @Centique I think if people bail, they must do it in the first half. But I was never bored- very much the opposite. Unlike other long novels, there isn't much in the way of digressions. With each new account you get more clues- you just need to be ok with not being able to keep them perfectly in your head at all times. The immersive quality, as you mentioned, was my favorite. 1y

Did you ever finish a book and the last lines remind you of something, but you can't remember if it's from another part of the book or something else? Having a major case of that here- but a beautiful ending so maybe I should just let it be. Still...it's driving me nuts!

ReadingEnvy It makes me think of Jeanette Winterson. 1y
Billypar @ReadingEnvy Hmm...I haven't read any Winterson. But Catton has a lot of stylistic flares so I did wonder if I'm just remembering something similar in that sense as opposed to the content itself. 1y
LeahBergen Hmm... now it‘s reminding me of another book, too. 🤔 1y

Finally made it to Part 2 ❤❤❤ Loving it so far! It's written as a narrative, with very little in the 1st person which strangely took a while to get my head around, but it suits this story really well!
