I would have bailed if I hadn't gotten it from NetGalley. I think after I finish the cozy mysteries I have been approved for I won't request any more (which is really disappointing for me,) but the one I have been getting approved for have been horrible.

This was a nice relaxing book. There weren't any super complex problems to be solved, so no huge stressful story arc. But the author kept the characters interesting. It didn't hurt that there were tons of descriptions about tea, and places that I've been to.

If I hadn't gotten this from Netgalley and felt like I HAD to review it I wouldn't have finished it. It took me from April 2, to today, June 26, to finish this book. Most of the descriptive fantasy words aren't explained which was very frustrating. But apparently it is supposed to be a trilogy.

This series continues to entertain, and both books were quick reads, just one more to go.

So I really liked this book in spots, but then it really dragged on in others. When it was good it was really good, but when it was bad it was really boring.

I used to play a steampunk Facebook game that was based on this series, the author created the game. Unfortunately the game is gone, but I've finally gotten around to reading the book. It is a dystopian setting, but has a steampunk aesthetic.

After getting over my disappointment of tge main character not being Chinese-American I continued the series. It is fun to read about the tea room flourishing, despite all the dead bodies that pile up there.

After finding out that the author is German, I realize why the sentence structure in Korean is so akward. It must have been tranlated word for word.

Unlike Ender's Game you can see the author's own opinion on government and religion. It was good to listen to this book as an audiobook, as I would have otherwise butchered the Brazilian Portuguese.

I got this as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) through Netgalley, and if I had gotten it any other way I would have quit reading it before I even got a quarter of the way through. I liked the blurb, but I did not enjoy this book. For quite a few chapters I didn't even know the story was set in the modern day. Most of the characters are flat and uninteresting. I was highly disappointed. I think the book needed more world-building, or something else.

I was disappointed in this book, but because of my own expectations. Knowing that the author is of Chinese descent, but was setting her series in Oxford, England, I wanted a character who was visibly Chinese, but behaved as a typical British lady. Part of this is from never finding anyone like myself in a story, a half-Korean British-American. Getting adjusted to white Gemma instead of Chinese Gemma took some time.

Not exactly what I was expecting. The beginning was very confusing, because the story just begins in the middle of action, and there isn't any backstory o explanation until chapter 8 or 10.

This was a reread for me. The good, a prosthetic in place of the glass slipper. The bad, the exotic othering that happened with the characters, the setting, and the plot. To read more about that I would point you to http:s://no-award.net/2013/08/01/the-exotic-place-as-other-and-notes-on-cinder-by-marissa-meter/

This was both good and bad. The characters were interesting, but the plot and background were lacking. I really wanted more explanations for how other parts of history changed with the Library of Alexandria surviving, and more explanations for how it gained so much control. The students going to England to save the books seemed ponderously slow.

This is a reread for me. Jack Fleming, a vapmire, learns how to deal with his condition in 1930's Chicago, and with the mob tailing him.

Very little in the way of steampunk in this book. It is more about blue blood and verwolfen politics.

I made a challenge to read 100 books that I had never read before, I'm 9 books behind.

Jake Daggers is supposed to be a brilliant detective, but you can't really see it. He blunders from one clue to another accueses the wrong people and doesn't seem to make any deductions. He's completely sexist to his new partner, meaning every time he opened his mouth some type of misogyny and to spew out. Once or twice would have been enough to get the point across, so often was just grating. I will try the next book in the series.

Intriguing. My copy was a free kindle. It has some grammar and formatting problems. Nothing too big, but it can throw you out of the story.

A little too cheesy for my tastes. Plus it deviates from the myths. A better way to learn the Greek myths without reading dry text would be with Rick Riordan.

I wish there was a better explanation between the blue-bloods and vampires; and between the Scottish loupe clans and the verwulfen. Those four groups are kind of thrown into the story without much detail.

Honestly, if I wasn't reading this for my Goodreads challenge (reading 100 new to me books), I would have bailed on the book. It is a hot mess. The author was trying too hard to change Wonderland from fantastical to morbidly creepy. Also the lack of research done on modern psychiatric hospital was highly disappointing.

A lot if this book is similar to any other dystopian book, everyone in uniforms, on a strict diet and schedule. What's new is often not explained, what is the point of the sorting job? Why is writing not allowed when typing is? Cassia has to be taught how to write cursive, by Ky, her not-a-match, even though she knows how to type. There's a love triangle, but it is lacking, as are the general friendships.

Uh! If I hadn't received this from NetGalley in exchange for a review I would have given up on it. It was a horrible mess. The author couldn't keep her own charcters straight, and it was very obvious she had never been to England. I was highly disappointed.
