Cinder
Cinder: Book One of the Lunar Chronicles | Marissa Meyer
The #1 New York Times Bestselling Series!Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth's fate hinges on one girl. . . . Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She's a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world's future. Marissa Meyer on Cinder, writing, and leading menWhich of your characters is most like you?I wish I could say that I'm clever and mechanically-minded like Cinder, but noI can't fix anything. I'm much more like Cress, who makes a brief cameo in Cinder and then takes a more starring role in the third book. She's a romantic and a daydreamer and maybe a little on the nave sidethings that could be said about me tooalthough she does find courage when it's needed most. I think we'd all like to believe we'd have that same inner strength if we ever needed it. Where do you write?I have a home office that I've decorated with vintage fairy tale treasures that I've collected (my favorite is a Cinderella cookie jar from the forties) and NaNoWriMo posters, but sometimes writing there starts to feel too much like work. On those days I'll write in bed or take my laptop out for coffee or lunch. If you were stranded on a desert island, which character from Cinder would you want with you?Cinder, definitely! She has an internet connection in her brain, complete with the ability to send and receive comms (which are similar to e-mails). We'd just have enough time to enjoy some fresh coconut before we were rescued. The next book in the Lunar Chronicles is called Scarlet, and is about Little Red Riding Hood. What is appealing to you most about this character as you work on the book?Scarlet is awesomeshe's very independent, a bit temperamental, and has an outspokenness that tends to get her in trouble sometimes. She was raised by her grandmother, an ex-military pilot who now owns a small farm in southern France, who not only taught Scarlet how to fly a spaceship and shoot a gun, but also to have a healthy respect and appreciation for nature. I guess that's a lot of things that appeal to me about her, but she's been a really fun character to write! (The two leading men in Scarlet, Wolf and Captain Thorne, aren't half bad either.)

I read these books when they were new and found them so unique and a lot of fun. I've decided to revisit them on audio, to see if I like them as much. So far, still very fun, but I am finding it to be an odd choice to set it in New Beijing but to use so few details of Chinese culture. Seems like a missed opportunity for an even richer setting.

The Glamour used by the Luna people is definitely a type of mask, since it is often used to hide or alter a person‘s true appearance.

I had tried reading this book when it first came out and I didnt like it for some reason. Now 7 years later I listened to it in audiobook form and enjoyed it a heck of a lot more. I found it compelling and fantastical. Marissa Meyer really knows how to write ya fantasy and I cant wait to read the next book in the series.

I really liked this version/retelling of Cinderella, told through a cyborg‘s perspective. I noticed some similarities between the 2 stories and it kept me engaged the entire time. Now, I need to read book #2 to know what happens next!

I had this book sitting on my shelf for a long time and actually LOST it before I finally gave in, got from the library and read it. I feel a fool for taking so long. This book is absolutely amazing, though I‘ll admit a weakness for fairytale retelling. Cinder surprised me, left me wanting more and yet left me thoroughly happy with the story itself. Look forward to the next one!

I‘ve had this whole series in my to read list for a long time but only knew that it was a fairy tale retelling, which I enjoy. This one was a little more unusual than I expected and I loved it! I‘m definitely going to be reading the rest of the series as soon as possible. Not sure what took me so long to decide to read it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was worried I would hate this - and I'm not great at walking away from a book. I tried to read one of the books written by the Wicked author, the Snow White one, and I hated it. I read Dorothy Must Die, the reinvention of The Wizard of Oz, and hated it too. But, I'm doing a reading challenge and need a 'retelling' of a famous story, so I decided on this. I'm pleasantly surprised - I like it so far!

I finished Cinder, and I‘m due for a dose of dilaudid, so I‘m going to call my #24in48 there. It‘s been a trying one. As I may have mentioned once or twice, I was doing this one from a hospital bed and it is TOUGH to read when you‘re medicated, your blood sugar is too high or, worse, too low, and nurses keep interrupting you. I‘m quite proud that I managed twelve hours!

I‘m really bad at picking favorites, but I‘m working on a ya book right now, so I‘m going with that one! It‘s slow-going because I‘m listening instead of reading, so a book that might take me two hours is taking me ten. #24in48

I liked the world building, but the plot was very predictable and the "big reveals" were not shocking at all. The edition I have also has a lot of bonus material, so the ending was abrupt since there were so many pages left. I miiiight give the next one's a try.

ElizaMarie I was iffy about Cinder too. Currently listening to Scarlet... it‘s pretty good so far 4mo

stephothebesto @readingjedi it's pretty good! I love sour beers and am excited that they're trendy these days. This is the description on the can, which cracks me up: This German Gose is bright and frisky, tart and saline, and dances on the palate with punches of peach. Thirst quenching beyond all imagination, Peach Dodo is the finest of liquids for a beach picnic or for making history. 4mo

Today‘s #colormepretty is #redwhiteandblue!

Two of these are Marissa Meyer and that‘s gotta say something. The Lunar Chronicles are fantastic fairy tale retellings, and the Renegades series brings new life to superhero books.

The Raven Boys is, again, one of my favorite series. Please, if you like paranormal YA, read these books.

Caraval is far from one of my favorite books, but I‘ve been told the trilogy gets better. We‘ll see.

Happy July 4!

The story is definitely different than the Cinderella that we all know. It is also book one in a series so the ending is not happily ever after. You will have to continue with the series to find out what happens. Some parts were confusing but sometimes when I am reading, I have distractions that interfere so that may be why the story had confusing parts.
