The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly
The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly: A Novel | Sun-mi Hwang
A Korean Charlotte's Web More than 2 million copies sold This is the story of a hen named Sprout. No longer content to lay eggs on command, only to have them carted off to the market, she glimpses her future every morning through the barn doors, where the other animals roam free, and comes up with a plan to escape into the wildand to hatch an egg of her own. An anthem for freedom, individuality and motherhood featuring a plucky, spirited heroine who rebels against the tradition-bound world of the barnyard, The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly is a novel of universal resonance that also opens a window on Korea, where it has captivated millions of readers. And with its array of animal charactersthe hen, the duck, the rooster, the dog, the weaselit calls to mind such classics in English as Animal Farm and Charlottes Web. Featuring specially-commissioned illustrations, this first English-language edition of Sun-mi Hwangs fable for our times beautifully captures the journey of an unforgettable character in world literature. From the Trade Paperback edition.

In this moving tale, we look at the world through the eyes of a hen who calls herself Sprout. As Sprout ventures outside her coop, a new world opens for her as she struggles to survive, is faced with the reality of her dreams, and bravely withstands ridicule and heartache. The main character may be a hen, but the lessons and emotions are relatable for humans of all ages. An enchanting book, it is no surprise this is an international bestseller.

I really enjoyed this. I love animals, and really felt for Sprout. Even if they weren‘t animals, there is a lot of mother-child type interactions going on between Sprout and the little one. And interesting (and sad) interactions between Sprout, the little one, and the other farm animals

This was a cute fun read. I loved Sprout and her undying love for Greentop. I think it makes a powerful statement, as well, that blood doesn't make family which is something I connect to deeply.

A short, effective tale of love, motherhood, resilience, and tolerance. I fell in love with the protagonist – a scrawny hen who dreams of freedom and hatching an egg. Also, the last chapter left me teary-eyed which is not what I expected from a book about ducks, hens and weasels. A great read if you're looking for something simple yet powerful.

For the #24in48 Hour 30 Challenge of what under the radar book I would recommend, my choice is The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly. This book wrecked me. It is about motherhood, sacrifice, differences, and love. I'm surprised it affected me so much because I'm not a mother, or very nurturing. You MUST read it now. I plan to read The Dog Who Dared to Dream, but I'm not sure if I am emotionally able to right now. Full review is on Goodreads.

The movie was adapted from this book, which is a story about dreaming you can be something more, love, growing up, motherhood, bullying, identity, intolerance & ultimately sacrifice. All of these wonderful relatable topics are wrapped up in a beautiful & heartfelt little book. It's a short, quick read that will stay with you for a long time.

My parents are immigrants but I was born in the US. So while I speak Korean fluently, I can read & write very little. I always wonder what I'm losing in the translation. Some translations are better than others. For example, the literal translation of the Korean title is "The hen comes out of the yard". This title is obviously better. ? #womenintranslation #aprilbookshowers @RealLifeReading

Nafiza I adored this one. The ending made me weep. I minored in Korean in undergrad and in the translating course, got a chance to (painfully) read some stories in Korean. There's so much awesome Korean lit that doesn't get translated. Especially short stories. I will always be sad about that. 3y

This delightful Korean fable tells the story of Sprout, a hen who plans to escape her farm and yearns for a baby of her own. Along with a motley crew of farm animals, this book is reminiscent of Charlotte's Web and Animal Farms. The story brings out universal relatable themes like freedom, motherhood, adoption, power of friendship, selfishness and being trapped in an unhappy life. Yet through all these misfortunes, she becomes a strong heroine.

"Just because you're the same kind doesn't mean you're all one happy family. The important thing is to understand each other. That's love!" This is a whimsical tale of Sprout, an egg-laying hen whose long cherished dream is to escape the coop and to hatch her own baby chick! The book is compared to Animal Farm and Charlotte‘s Web, but it's not political, instead focuses more on what makes us human. Review to come. ? #currentread
