Institute | Stephen King
post image

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis‘s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there‘s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy.

A gripping thriller about three young girlfriends, a dark obsession and a chilling crime that shakes up a quiet Iowa town, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Weight of Silence. For twelve-year-old Cora Landry and her friends Violet and Jordyn, it was supposed to be an ordinary sleepover—movies and Ouija and talking about boys.
✨So far so good!

Big Library read! Fast pace read!

Told in alternating chapters in the girls‘ distinct voices, I‘m Not Dying with You Tonight shows how Campbell‘s challenges are not quite the same as Lena‘s—and that the community‘s perception and prejudices of them both will either aid or hinder their journey. They may be together physically, but their paths are divergent because of their race.

The mesmerizing adult debut from Leigh Bardugo, a tale of power, privilege, dark magic, and murder set among the Ivy League elite.

Great discussion last night at Barnes & Noble good reviews all around. I don‘t read many fantasy dark novels but this one was actually well put together and intriguing.

ImperfectCJ I enjoyed this one, too, especially the relationships between the women in the novel (well, most of them...). Our local B&N book club was sparsely attended, as usual, but good discussion. The bookseller and I talked about how it echoes in either tone or content several other books, like Lev Grossman's The Magicians and Donna Tartt's The Secret History. 1mo
Latrelwhite @ImperfectCJ 😳You are over my head...😂 Our meeting was sparsely attended as well it was three of us and one didn‘t finish. Do you see a sequel coming??? 1mo
ImperfectCJ @Latrelwhite Ha! Sorry, I slip into English-major mode too readily. 🤓 There's supposed to be a second novel, and Goodreads says 2021 publication date, but I haven't seen that anywhere else. 1mo

Pudd'nhead Wilson (1894) is a novel by American writer Mark Twain. Its central intrigue revolves around two boys—one, born into slavery, with 1/32 black ancestry; the other, white, born to be the master of the house. The two boys, who look similar, are switched at infancy. Each grows into the other's social role.

In Heavy, Laymon writes eloquently and honestly about growing up a hard-headed black son to a complicated and brilliant black mother in Jackson, Mississippi. From his early experiences of sexual violence, to his suspension from college, to time in New York as a college professor, Laymon charts his complex relationship with his mother, grandmother, anorexia, obesity, sex, writing, and ultimately gambling. It grabs you from the beginning.👍🏽✨
