The Return of Ellie Black
The Return of Ellie Black: A Novel | Emiko Jean
42 posts | 49 read | 21 to read
Detective Chelsey Calhouns life is turned upside down when she gets the call Ellie Black, a girl who disappeared years earlier, has resurfaced in the woods of Washington statebut Ellies reappearance leaves Chelsey with more questions than answers. I stayed up late into the night turning the pages until I learned the truth of what happened to Ellieand gasped when Jean delivered a truly jaw-dropping twist. Jessica Knoll, New York Times bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and Bright Young Women Its been twenty years since Detective Chelsey Calhouns sister vanished when they were teenagers, and ever since shes been searching: for signs, for closure, for other missing girls. But happy endings are rare in Chelseys line of work. Then a glimmer: local teenager Ellie Black, who disappeared without a trace two years earlier, has been found alive in the woods of Washington State. But something is not right with Ellie. She wont say where shes been, or who shes protecting, and its up to Chelsey to find the answers. She needs to get to the bottom of what happened to Ellie: for herself, and for the memory of her sister, but mostly for the next girl who could be takenand who, unlike Ellie, might never return. The debut thriller from New York Times bestselling author Emiko Jean, The Return of Ellie Black is both a feminist tour de force about the embers of hope that burn in the aftermath of tragedy and a twisty page-turner that will shock and surprise you right up until the final page.

Seems I‘ve been reading a lot of books about people being kidnapped or lost in the woods lately. Must be a trend. This book had a twist which made it different than the others. I certainly wouldn‘t want to go through the things that Ellie Black and bad “sisters” went through. This book was definitely a page turner. The end did not disappoint.

I finally found time to read this one! I can‘t believe the author of cute and fun Tokyo Ever After wrote this! It‘s pretty dark subject matter. I enjoyed the twists it took and the way it handled two main narrators. I wish there had been a little more at the end but overall it was a page turner.

This book started out good though I kept comparing it to The Child Finder, which I recently read and has a similar plot.
In this one the missing girl returns but with her a lot of mystery and unanswered questions. Detective Chelsey Calhoun needs to find the answers: where had Ellie Black been held captive and by whom? Her search leads to a fast paced story yet the ending seemed so unrealistic. It can‘t beat The Child Finder.

dabbe Lovely. 🤩🤩🤩 4mo
Hooked_on_books I liked this one and didn‘t mind the ending, but that‘s a very good point. It‘s not realistic. 4mo

I was fascinated with the “How can someone disappear without a trace” story. The story was dark and disturbing.

Teen Ellie has been missing for 2 years when she is found on a hiking trail. Detective Chelsey has been trying to find her for two years and is thrilled she's turned up. But some things don't add up and she feels like Ellie is hiding something. I did not predict how the last 1/4 of this book played out and there are a couple things I'd have done differently. ⬇️ A soft pick. The narration was good.

bookandbedandtea I would have been happier if the disappearance of Chelsey's sister, years ago, hadn't had any bearing on Ellie's story. What we discover about the sister felt weird and unnecessary. 5mo

Ellie Black, a girl who disappeared years earlier, has resurfaced in the woods of Washington State. She won't say where she's been, it's up to Detective Chelsey Calhoun to find out the answers. This is a slow-burn of a novel.

EadieB Ellie's got secrets and she isn't talking. It had multiple POV's and a message that women are vulnerable victims and men are predatory and evil. The twists were great and led me to read the book to the very end. If you like psychological thrillers, then you will love this book. 6mo

Oof. This was well done but disturbing! About a third of the way in I almost closed the book because some of the scenes were too much for me, but I ended up reading on through to the end. I need a palate cleanser after this, like a rom com.

Seventeen year old Ellie Black disappeared 2 years ago and suddenly reappears in a wooded area, clearly having been abused. We then learn her backstory while a detective tries to learn what happens and find the perpetrator. I liked in the structure of this that we as the reader find things out before the cops. Really satisfying read.

5⭐
You know those stories about missing girls who come back to their families but then it turns out they aren‘t really the missing girl after all…they‘re just trying to scam the families. This isn‘t that story. It was original and really quite smart. The narration by the full cast was also rather fantastic.

This is an outstanding novel. A story that will stick with you for a while. Have you gritting your teeth and holding your breath. It's full of twists and turns and so much more. About abducted girls and what they endure. About one who makes it back and what she goes through. What secrets she has.
What happened to Ellie Black... Read this one.

I very recently read/enjoyed the Reappearance of Rachel Price but to do so required a suspension of disbelief that was at times hard to hold back. This book is completely the opposite and we are immersed in the local officials whose priorities change when a missing/disappeared woman shows up in her hometown. It was fun to read both so close together.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks On my list! 7mo

Wowza!! I absolutely couldn‘t put this genuinely jaw-dropping, gasp-out-loud-inducing thriller down! I can see why this was an option for #BookOfTheMonth for this month! The book opens with the titular return of Elizabeth “Ellie” Black who has been missing for two years. The lead detective, Chelsey Calhoun, following in her adopted father‘s steps, focuses on finding the perpetrator, risking her own personal life. Twisting plot & great characters!

Sace This was my pick this month! I wonder when I‘ll get around to it 😂 8mo

Anytime a mystery keeps me guessing &invested in finding the truth, I‘m hooked. Jean wrote a story filled w/suspense whose storytelling leaves you wanting more @ the end of each chapter.
Ellie‘s been missing for yrs when she suddenly reappears. Chelsey, the original detective, takes the reins in hopes of finding who took Ellie. But the more Chelsey presses Ellie, the more Ellie disengages, &Chelsey can‘t help but wonder what Ellie is hiding.

What I liked? Femme-centered! But also a bit-rape centered but given the subject matter thats the territory.

What didn‘t work me—main character Chelsey outclassed as a detective—younger than she should. Ellie—more mature than likely to be at 19.

I personally saw it coming but then again I‘m a power-reader—I can tell given what‘s be said & what‘s not where your “twist” is.

Frankly I‘m over the “big twist” ubiquitous trope in thrillers.
