Loved this. Went in with few expectations, came out with my head spinning! Funny and sad, and as honest a portrayal of teenage pregnancy as I've ever read- and I've read many.
A reread, but it had been so long it may as well have been new. I'm tempted to read the whole series, though I doubt the rest could be as good.
Not sure how I feel about the upcoming sequel... quick blog post up at reading-in-bed.com
Having completed my 35 book anti-challenge, I'm rereading for the rest of the year. Starting with this, purchased long before I knew that movie tie ins were tacky.
You can't understand the modern world if you can't imagine selling what you love best.
I ordered from Book Depository because the UK cover is SO superior. Marlboro want even my brand but come on. then they sent me a signed edition!
Goddamn. Jean Rhys can do more in a 4 page short story than many can do in a 500 page novel.
More like Eat Read Fuck, amiright?
Good, but strained credibility- I know it was 2008 and not everyone had a smart phone but I still don't believe how many intensely personal conversations were conducted in Jende's hearing- it was like a performance. Dialog heavy in general, which made it hard for me to know the characters. I didn't pick up what they were thinking or feeling. The story was compelling but the writing wasn't.
I liked this book a lot and recommend it to almost anyone but I don't think it'll be shortlisted for the Giller... there were some problems with the writing, some sloppiness, some inconsistencies, and a few plot points that were too convenient. there were a lot of things it got right though. an honest look at consent and contemporary rape culture, and very unputdownable!
