The "wonderfully talented" (Dwight Garner, New York Times) author of Mislaid returns with a fierce and audaciously funny novel of familiesboth the ones were born into and the ones we createa story of obsession, idealism, and ownership, centered around a young woman who inherits her bohemian late father's childhood home.
Recent business school graduate Penny Baker has rebelled against her family her whole lifeby being the conventional one. Her mother, Amalia, was a member of a South American tribe called the Kogi; her much older father, Norm, long ago attained cult-like deity status among a certain cohort of aging hippies while operating a psychedelic "healing center." And shes never felt particularly close to her much older half-brothers from Norms previous marriageone wickedly charming and obscenely rich (but mostly just wicked), one a photographer on a distant tropical island.
But all that changes when her father dies, and Penny inherits his childhood home in New Jersey. She goes to investigate the property and finds it not overgrown and abandoned, but rather occupied by a group of friendly anarchist squatters whom she finds unexpectedly charming, and who have renamed the property "Nicotine." The Nicotine residents (united in defense of smokers rights) possess the type of passion and fervor Penny feels shes desperately lacking, and the other squatter houses in the neighborhood provide a sense of community she has never felt before. She soon moves into a nearby residence, becoming enmeshed in the political fervor and commitment of her fellow squatters.
As the Baker familys lives begin to converge around the fate of the house now called Nicotine, Penny grows ever bolder and more desperate to protect itand its residentsuntil a fateful night when a reckless confrontation between her old family and her new one changes everything.
Nell Zink exquisitely captures the clash between Baby-Boomer idealism and Millennial pragmatism, between the have-nots and want-mores, in a riotous yet tender novel that brilliantly encapsulates our time.

This book it different. The plot isn't the story (which is used more like a setting) bc the plot is the characters. Not everyone likes that kind of writing but I happen to really love it. This isn't for everyone and the anti political recognition of first world problems can be a bit tedious at times but nonetheless I loved it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I'm usually really good about staying relatively on top of my #BOTM choices - but not always. This was in my Nov 2016 box and is the oldest unread BOTM pick I have on my shelf by far. It didn't get much love so I kept putting it off. I'm determined to give it a shot this year! 😂

What's the oldest BOTM pick still unread on your shelf?

Spoiled Millennials who take up activism to avoid earning a living and a plot that weakly revolves around the inheritance of a run down house in Jersey City. Why? So many good writers writing forgettable books these days.

Outstanding. Nell Zink has this joyfully sardonic sensibility that I want to be enveloped in at all times. She's one of my favorite authors.

What a difference just sticking with it can make. A few nights ago when I started this book I was dragging through the first 30 pages, wondering when it was going to get better. Fast forward to today, where I‘m 20 pages from the end, and I stayed up until 3am this morning reading because I couldn‘t put it down! It‘s not the best book I‘ve ever read, but it‘s definitely one of the most unique and well-executed. I won‘t soon forget it.

Wow. This has got horrid reviews, but I‘m going to give it a try anyway. The first 10 pages were awful, but it started picking up after that.

On an unrelated note, I‘ve always wondered how novels with terrible openings get published. If I were an editor I‘d have turned this down just based on the first 10 pages. Or I would‘ve cut the opening down significantly.

Artsywink I liked it but you have to give it about a 100 pages or so 7y

Got to a point in the book where I thought it was the end but it's still going strong. I find that I am more concerned about the house than the characters.

I've never read a book with so many unlikeable characters! The protagonist was the most pathetic persona of all time; I was nauseatingly embarrassed for her as a woman. And all the dilly-dallying in the story for what plot? Well, I'm still not sure about that either.

BUT! I finished the damn book and my 22-year-old, wanna-be alternative, hipster scum self would have thought the ideologies & lifestyles featured were really cutting edge & cool🙄

My favorite thing about it was how very real it was. It just had a way of feeling like an extension of contemporary reality, in terms of globalization and social issues, social experiences. It was also super unny and daring. - Chorel

Oof. Where do I start? Well, the beginning started off strong for me. I didn't know what to expect really and it seemed kind of funny, quirky and full of promise. Then it just kind of unravels into a messy plot line and super annoying dialogue. I tried, I really tried to like this one. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ or ⭐️⭐️ #litsyatoz #letterN

I finished two books on New Year's, but didn't post my reviews. Here is the first: Nicotine. I had never read anything by Nell Zink, but this one sounded quirky and fun. I liked aspects of this one, particularly the writing. But it also felt disjointed. The beginning of the book is clunky and the characters were difficult to connect with. That said, I am glad I read it and did find it interesting.

mauveandrosysky I felt similarly about this one. 7y

#funfridayphoto My #TBR for 2017. I have one main bookshelf in my husband's "man cave" and two shelves are devoted to #TBR. It's not much and I have quite a few unread books on our decorative shelves upstairs but I recently went through and culled three entire bookcases worth. I try to only have books I really, truly want to read and I only keep them after I've read them if they are #BOTM or if I really loved them!

More in detailed review will be coming soon. However, I will say that this book was deeply problematic in relation to sexual orientation and expressions of sexuality, particularly as it relates to the Ace community. 🙅🏻 It wasn't unreadable, but deeply, profoundly problematic.

I LOVE this book. It drew me in from the very first words and held on right until the end. I loved the mystery of Penny's family and that Zink gives you the pieces of the back story, but doesn't spell it out - lets you get there on your own. #BOTM is 2 for 2 with me now! I'm already anticipating next month! Also love the color theme I've got going on here 😎

They could have let Dad sleep through all that. Everybody knows people are animals, only smarter. It's wrong to torture any animal, even for it's own good. Especially then. But instead of giving him real drugs, they kept wanting him to be alert, so he could make his peace with God. I always thought religuous people were massively annoying. Now I know they're evil.
