Tampa | Alissa Nutting
Celeste Price is an eighth-grade English teacher in suburban Tampa. She's undeniably attractive. She drives a red Corvette with tinted windows. Her husband, Ford, is rich, square-jawed, and devoted to her. But Celeste's devotion lies elsewhere. She has a singular sexual obsessionfourteen-year-old boys. Celeste pursues her craving with sociopathic meticulousness and forethought; her sole purpose in becoming a teacher is to fulfill her passion and provide her access to her compulsion. As the novel opens, fall semester at Jefferson Jr. High is beginning. In mere weeks, Celeste has chosen and lured the lusciously naive Jack Patrick into her web. Jack is enthralled and in awe of his teacher, and, most important, willing to accept Celeste's terms for a secret relationshipcar rides after school; rendezvous at Jack's house while his single father works late; body-slamming encounters in Celeste's empty classroom between periods. Ever mindful of the dangerthe perpetual risk of exposure, Jack's father's own attraction to her, and the ticking clock as Jack leaves innocent boyhood behindthe hyperbolically insatiable Celeste bypasses each hurdle with swift thinking and shameless determination, even when the solutions involve greater misdeeds than the affair itself. In slaking her sexual thirst, Celeste Price is remorseless and deviously free of hesitation, a monstress driven by pure motivation. She deceives everyone, and cares nothing for anyone or anything but her own pleasure. With crackling, rampantly unadulterated prose, Tampa is a grand, uncompromising, seriocomic examination of want and a scorching literary debut.

You know that expression on Brian‘s face as he watches Allison construct her lunch? Not the one here, it‘s a bit more grossed out than this.

That‘s how it feels to peek inside Celeste Price‘s head reading this book. The story is a bad car accident that you can‘t help but show down to look at. When you think it can‘t get worse, it does.

And now I‘m realizing Brian Johnson is already too old for Celeste and I‘m disgusted all over again.

Bookwormjillk Lol Brian Johnson might be in AARP by now. 5mo

I struggled to understand the “point” of Tampa, but reading it was an interesting intellectual exercise all the same, analysing my own visceral reactions to it. Proceed with caution. (Of course, if you‘re anything like me, such a warning will only make you want to read it more – godspeed, but be careful!) Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/tampa-alissa-nutting/

This was a complex read. It‘s the most sensual book I‘ve ever read, but I felt gross listening as it‘s about a middle school teacher preying on students. The teacher‘s relentlessness is absolutely disturbing. I understand readers who couldn‘t make it through the material or who loathed this book thanks to the main character being despicable. I was absorbed by this, as it feels like a horror story that could happen in real life.

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 2y
Reggie When I read this I put it on my best horror of the year list that year. I started out laughing because of the sexual hyperbole but the further it goes the darker it goes and then I just felt I was reading something written by the devil. It was good, though. 2y
JoeMo @Reggie I agree with you…I was telling a friend about this book and I described it as “real horror” in the fact that this kind of stuff can and sometimes happens. The more complex and darker it got, it‘s like I was sickened, but I couldn‘t stop listening! 2y

On page 1 I realised I was reading a smutty sex story like the ones they used to print in Knave in the 70s. The blurb says “Lolita meets American Psycho”- It‘s not. It‘s just a shitty book that‘s in bad taste about a woman teacher‘s graphic descriptions of her attempts to groom a 14 year old boy. It‘s not erotic it‘s unsavoury. When I told wifey she laughed and said, no wonder, the cover is a vagina. Doh! Thank god I didn‘t read it on the train 😂

For today's #AdventRecommeds I give you...the book I refused to read when everyone was talking about it only to pick it up at random while it was less popular.

I HATE the cover. I can't use buttons anymore because it weirds me out now. The book? Was it tough to read? Yes. Is it triggering for some? Absolutely yes. Are there scenes I wish I never read? Scarred for life. Could I stop listening? Fuck No!

Was it worth it? Hell yes

As much as I wanted to put it down, I didn‘t. I really went back and forth with whether or not it was just too detailed considering the pedophilic nature, but ultimately I feel like the details gave me a better understanding of the characters and power dynamic. Absolutely shocking, it made me physically nauseous. The ending was infuriating, but sadly realistic. Nutting is clearly a talented writer and I have to give it to her🤷🏻‍♀️

Well, I have officially found the first book I refused to listen to over the car speakers 🤣 I have a hard time reviewing this. There are a lot of inconsistencies in the book that I think get glossed over by the shock of the graphic sex and sexual thoughts involving a minor (seriously, it's pretty much every page). The sex didn't bother me as I think it was necessary to really show the darkness inside Celeste's picture perfect exterior ⬇️⬇️⬇️

FantasyChick Did I think it was a bit much? At times but I really think it shows just how much a person can be consumed by this. A predator is always after their prey. Don't think they can just shut it off, which was highlighter by Celeste herself when she was reasoning why she would never want children. I also appreciate that we really saw her narcissism toward every person and situation she encountered. Everything was about her and her needs. 2y
FantasyChick The other thing I really appreciated about this book is that is really puts forward the double standard between male sex offenders and female. If this was about a male teacher and his female student it would have had a totally different outcome. The female student is a victim and the teacher is a monster where, in this case, a young, attractive (yes...looks matter more than you think) woman is guilty of giving in to every teenaged boys' fantasy 2y
FantasyChick It's a slap on the wrist versus a lifetime of condemnation for the villains and a lifetime of humiliation, guilt and judgement versus a round of high fives for the victims. I think this is something that happens way more than we realize and the punishments are too lenient. This was definitely the case of this book and the teacher it was based on. Good on the author for putting it out there. I can't imagine getting into her mindset to write. 2y
See All 8 Comments
FantasyChick Or maybe I'm looking too much into it and it's really just a dirty book about a dirty teacher 🤷‍♀️ Either way, I couldn't stop listening but it made feel really icky to do it. 2y

I go back and forth with marking this as pick or so-so. The reason for that has nothing to do with the content--which is bizarre af--but with the editing oversights.
They changed her car 3 times in the book, once even within the same chapter. I believe she had a white Camaro to start and then she had a red Corvette which then became a red Camaro. Definitely a big difference between a Corvette and a Camaro, especially given the backseat sex scene

Circlejxrk Because corvettes dont have backseats. I'm offended that Litsy silenced me after 451 words. 4y

2. Tampa by Alissa Nutting changed my perspective on “relationships” between female teachers and male students. Great book, but be prepared for graphic depictions of sexuality and violence.

#3Books that made me uncomfortable

1. American Psycho was rough on my weak stomach 🤢
2. Until I read Flowers In the Attic (I was about 11 years old the first time I did), I didn‘t know you could do THAT with someone you‘re related to 😲
3. In the interest of full disclosure, I had trouble thinking of a 3rd book. I own the tagged book but haven‘t read it yet, and I fully expect to raise my eyebrows, roll my eyes, and drop my jaw when I do. 👇🏻

OriginalCyn620 I mean, the cover itself makes me uncomfortable, so in a way, I think it counts even though I haven‘t actually read it yet! Now when I see button holes, I see tiny vaginas, and that‘s no way to go through life. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y

I read this a while ago, but needed time to gather my thoughts about it. This book was profoundly disturbing in the way it takes you inside the mind of an unapologetic pedophile. Celeste was such an amoral, self-centered character, almost sociopathic, that it was hard to like anything about her. The writing was good, but the premise and the sex scenes....ewww. So-so rating because I‘m not sure I want to recommend to anyone, not due to low quality.

So I couldn‘t put it down...and the whole time my face was in permanent cringe mode. It was like clicking on a disturbing article and not being able to stop reading because you had to see how far it went; hoping the sociopathic main character gets caught and justice served. And not only did I hate her because she was doing terrible things, she was in general a terrible person with an ugly personality. If dark and twisted is your thing, pick.

MotionChickness I give it a so-so because I thought the writing could‘ve been improved. There were just a lot of weird details thrown in that I didn‘t think were necessary. And again, I‘m battling with my mentality on it. Is it okay to say you liked the book when the subject matter is incredibly messed up? How do you explain why you liked the book... (edited) 5y

Reading has been nearly halted this last month due to life. My excuse, always, huh? Lol

In attempt to read something other than Percy Jackson this summer, I picked up this disturbing book....

I‘m 14 pages in and am already thoroughly shook. I could not imagine the mindset Nutting had to get into to create this.

This will be a mentally challenging one to get through...

Reviewsbylola I want to give this another try. I tried it as an ebook and didn‘t like it. I bailed. But I suck at fiction in digital form for some reason. I‘ve heard such great things about this one. Not sure if you‘ve read this book, but it‘s similar as far as the plot and absolutely amazing! 5y
MotionChickness While I usually don‘t care what people think of me or my choice of reading, I‘m thankful this one is on my kindle. I don‘t want someone to see the cover, be startled by the unmistakable vagina, look up the book/plot, and then decide what they want about why I‘m reading it lol. It‘s a touchy subject. Thanks for the book rec! If I can make it through this one I‘ll look into that one 😊 (edited) 5y

If you followed the Debra LaFavre story, you will remember that she was a teacher in Tampa that was super pretty but she had sec with one of her middle schoolers. I‘m sure this book is based on her. The thing I remember most about that time is that the media kept talking about how pretty she is and that “of course boys would want to have sec with her” 👇

Kappadeemom As you read this book though, you see how much of a pedophile she really is because we are allowed inside her brain. This is where the magic happens in this book for me. We are so conditioned to think that a woman having sex with a young man is much different than a man having sex with a young boy or girl. This book shows us that it‘s all wrong and the kids are nothing but victims. 6y
gradcat I remember that like it was yesterday...pretty lurid, right? 6y
Kappadeemom @gradcat yes! And her “doe-eyed” innocence when she was in the court. I wonder what ever happened to her? 6y

zsuzsanna_reads Sounds intriguing! Have you read 6y
Kappadeemom @zsuzsanna_reads no, but I don‘t think I can read anything similar for a long time. I feel like I need a shower {shudder} 6y
zsuzsanna_reads @Kappadeemom that one was more psychologically complex than icky. It didn't condone the teacher's actions, but it didn't make me feel grossed out. Also, the main focus was the relationship between a psychologically controlling friend/ colleague and the offending teacher. 6y
gradcat @Kappadeemom @zsuzsanna_reads Plus, isn‘t “Notes on a Scandal” fiction? It was such a great movie, too, with Judi Dench & Cate Blanchett! I don‘t know what happened with that real-life teacher, except her husband did finally divorce her...he hung in for a bit, though...I remember being quite surprised by that. (edited) 6y
Kappadeemom @gradcat TAMPA is also fiction but it sounds very familiar with the real life story being very similar. 6y
gradcat @Kappadeemom Oh, really? I just assumed it was a book about the real thing...oops, my bad! It sounds very familiar to me, too.... 6y

Headed to Tampa this morning so I can run in a 15k in the morning. Decided to read this and hubby says, “Really? Now you match what you read with where we are going? That‘s ridiculous” 😂😂😂

LauraJ Bah! That‘s brilliant. 6y

Pickpick

Yikes! This disturbing, yet riveting book ejaculates on societal boundaries with total disregard. There are few books I've read that are this original or written with such abandon, and for that I give it much credit. I‘ll remember this one for a long time.
