Behold the Dreamers
Behold the Dreamers | Imbolo Mbue
For fans of AMERICANAH and THE NAMESAKE comes a debut novel about an immigrant couple striving to get ahead as the Great Recession hits home. With profound empathy, keen insight, and sly wit, Imbolo Mbue has written a compulsively readable story about marriage, class, race, and the trapdoors in the American Dream. Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem, has come to the United States to provide a better life for himself, his wife, Neni, and their six-year-old son. In the fall of 2007, Jende can hardly believe his luck when he lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers. Clark demands punctuality, discretion, and loyalty-and Jende is eager to please. Clark's wife, Cindy, even offers Neni temporary work at their summer home in the Hamptons. With these opportunities, Jende and Neni can at last gain a foothold in America and imagine a brighter future. However, the world of great power and privilege conceals troubling secrets, and soon Jende and Neni notice cracks in their employers' facades. Then the financial world is rocked by the collapse of Lehman Brothers. Desperate to keep Jende's job, which grows more tenuous by the day, the Jongas try to protect the Edwardses from certain truths, even as their own marriage threatens to fall apart. As all four lives are dramatically upended, Jende and Neni are forced to make an impossible choice.

3.5 ⭐️

Wasn‘t thrilled with this at first - almost gave up. And then I fell in love with all the characters. But then the last 2 or 3 chapters fell flat - otherwise this would have been 4 ⭐️ or more.

I‘d still recommend it. It‘s an important story to read these days. And the author does an excellent job of bringing humanity to each & every character- I‘d definitely read something else by her.

Thanks for the random pick @CoffeeCatsBooks 🙂

An emotional rollercoaster of a story that gives the reader a glimpse into immigrants‘ lives. Mbue does a great job of sharing each character‘s point of view. I finished it last night at 11:55 at night...I just couldn‘t put it down. Needless to say, I am a bit tired today. We also had our first snow of the season during the night.

1.Not really, just read as much as possible.
2.A bit of both. I usually set out with a TBR, but I‘m a slow reader so I usually finish the book I had been reading and then I go with whatever catches my eye.
3.Since it‘s cold out I usually go for hot chocolate, tea, or coffee and cookies.

5.Just enjoy yourself and don‘t stress about it.
6.🤷🏽‍♀️ haven‘t thought about it yet.

An excellent book! The voice acting on the audio version is SUPERB!! The story is of a family from Africa trying to make it in New York during the economic crisis of 2008. It's well-written with dynamic characters; the author illuminates the struggles of not only illegal "aliens" but also legal immigrants and native-born-Americans. Unfortunately it begins to drag at the end, but a worthwhile read!

Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻. I read this one & loved it from start to finish 4mo

Beautifully written and recommended with a slight reservation about the portrayal of the main female character‘s acceptance of a life she doesn‘t want. No doubt realistic but did make me hesitate a bit. Still a great read overall...

This follows the lives of the Jongas, immigrants from Cameroon, trying to live out the promise of the American Dream. A secondary story of the Edwardses, the family of a Wall Street exec, highlights the pitfalls of striving. The Jonga husband/wife disagree about America vs Cameroon, staying vs going, & the best future for their children. It explores what it means to be happy, what it takes to be home, & what it is to dream of better.

mc916 I returned this before finishing it because I couldn‘t get into it. I might have to pick it up again. It was a book club read, not my first choice, but everyone (or most) seemed to really like it. 6mo

Behold the Dreamers shares an interesting take on the immigrant experience. I envision that most immigrant stories begin similar to this. It was truly fascinating to see the Jongas story unfold from which Jende was desperate to stay and do everything to stay in America before leaving defeatedly back to his home of Limbe, Cameroon. Sometimes home is better and you need frustrating situations to prove it you.

Jende and Neni Jonga moved to the US to provide a better life for their two children than they had back home in Cameroon. I was knocked over by how much harder they had to work and live as immigrants for every single thing they earned than I likely ever will—still they felt extreme gratitude. The contrast between the Jonga family and their American employers is striking. We have so much here in America; the end was intensely emotional for me.

I read this book between Feb 16 & 23 and gave it 2 ⭐️. I really didn‘t like this book and felt it was such a let down. If anything the idea that the American Dream can corrupt is something that could have been done better but it‘s not. The writing is good but the characters become unlikeable and not much happens.
