First ever reading glasses! I've noticed a lack of motivation to read in the last year or so, and now in retrospect, I believe it was subtle eye strain that has only recently become consciously noticeable. So hopefully more reading for the rest of the year!

Ok time for a non-fiction review. I'm skeptical as to whether Zen is actually "real" Buddhism (as in anywhere near close to what the original Buddha taught) but I thought this introduction into the mind of an irreverent "Zen Master" was raw and honest enough to convince me there is something of substance to this thing we call Buddhism, whatever that may be exactly. Or better yet. Enlightenment. What the HELL is that supposed to be anyway? ?

Another book I read about 2 years ago that I thought I'd review. I'm actually more of a fan of the movie Exorcist 3, which made me curious about Blatty's work. He said he never intended the first movie to be "horror", and I think it shows in this novel. I'd personally class it more as a kind of "noir" with supernatural elements as an exercise in the theological musings of its author, who's a devout Catholic. Scary? No. But that's not the intent.

The House on the Borderland | William Hope Hodgson

Pickpick

After finding weird fiction through authors like HP Lovecraft, I became interested in forerunners to the genre. Well, my first sampling of earlier authors was in William Hope Hodgson with his best known work, The House on the Borderland. Not sure of other's experience completely but I was really drawn in by the dark, surreal, dream like visuals more than dramatic narrative. But that satisfied me enough. Next by this author will be The Night Land.

Bookwomble This is one of my favourite books 😊 If you liked Borderland, you'll find The Night Land a trip! 1y
Lukerey-Doo @Bookwomble I did actually start reading it a while back before life got in the way. It won't be long until I pick it up again 😃 1y
Bookwomble @Lukey-Looloo Is a bit of a doorstop, isn't it? ,😊 1y

New titled recently purchased and my introduction to the genre of Fairytale Retellings.

hannah-leeloo Is the best I could pick for the stories you asked lol. I did like her other book so I have high hopes. Hopefully I'll get my copy soon. If you wish to try other tales just ask as I loooooooove all. Especially Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland. I know a lot of dark versions too or adult. Happy reading 📚💙📖 1y
Lukerey-Doo Thanks to @hannah-leeloo for the recommendation 1y

Ok just signing in to report I've finally made it to the 51% mark with Haruki Murakami's The Wind-Bird Chronicle. This book has been "put down" for the better part of a year. But now that I'm in a better head space, I want to see where this story leads... Until then...

Lukerey-Doo Ok now 52% already. And this during my work lunch break. Should be a walk in the park! 1y

This isn't a “book“ as much as a short story by the prolific Jorge Luis Borges. I have his “ficciones“ and have only dipped my toe in the water with finishing this one.
I'm just glad that this man's way with words translate so amazingly in English! And what a way with words he has.
Not that I didn't understand the content per se. But even if I didn't I just love the way he verbally paints such bright colours. Have to at least read one more soon!

hannah-leeloo Love the image work 1y
Lukerey-Doo @hannah-leeloo thanks! Yeah I looked for something suitable, a possible cover maybe but it looks like this concept sketch captured some of it. 1y

I think this was my first journey into the genre of New Weird. I don't remember if I discovered it before or after seeing Annihilation, which is based on another work of the same author. What else can I say about it LOL. I suck at reviews 😆

One of my top picks from Bizarro legend Carlton Mellick iii 😎

DinoMom I read my first Bizarro by that author a few months ago. The haunted vagina and enjoyed it. So going to have to read this one as well 😀 1y
Lukerey-Doo LOL was my first Mellick novel as well! I just chose this one to review as it made even more of an impression.
Another honourable mention is Spider Bunny!

hannah-leeloo Always welcome sweet, no need to apologise as we all started the same ❤️ 1y
DinoMom @Lukey-Looloo I will have to check out spider bunny as well! 1y
Lukerey-Doo @DinoMom I also have to also mention Neverday as well. A lot more serious theme kind of like Groundhog Day. Was an emotional read. 1y
