Caps for sale is a children‘s literature/fiction book written by Esphyr Slobodkina. I read this book when I was a child and instantly remembered it through the cover. This book is about a peddler who wants to sell caps but finds that monkeys took them off his head when he was napping. The peddler eventually gets his caps back and has them up for sale. #UCFWaltersLit -children‘s literature/fiction

The book is focused on the reason why they are digging holes in the desert. #UCFWaltersLit - fiction

lburgos9 @Seans_h I remember in elementary school we read the book as a class then we took a field trip to the movie theater to watch the movie. I still to this day watch the movie whenever I can. It‘s one of the few movies based on books that does a good job trying to match the story. #UCFWalterslit (edited) 6y
Racheal.Shi.Horton This is a good book, that could teach students about the consequences of their actions. It also teaches them the importance of loyalty. 6y

Giraffes can‘t Dance is a children‘s fiction book written by Giles Andreae about a giraffe named Gerald who decides to go to the Jungle Dance, but once he steps on the dance floor, the other animals laugh at him. Gerald is comfortable to dance after talking to a cricket who believes in him. I like this children‘s book because it has a good moral to it but still entertaining. #UCFWaltersLit -fiction

Llama Llama Red Pajama | Anna Dewdney
post image

Llama llama Red Pajama is a fiction book written by Anna Dewdney. This book is a rhyme read aloud about a llama that begins to worry when his mama goes downstairs. She comes back upstairs to set things right. I read this book for a read aloud and I think it‘s particularly beneficial for EL‘s. Definitely recommend for beginning readers. #UCFWaltersLit -fiction

Brookegamble @Seans_h This book is adorable and I love that you mentioned that it is a great way to introduce new words to English learners! #UCFWaltersLit 6y
lizzie0922 @Seans_h I really like this book and the history it has. It‘s unbelievable how throughout the years this book continues to always be included in a school library. I also like the way they introduce new words to English learners #UCFWaltersLit 6y

Falling up is a poem/book written by Shel Silverstein. I found this poem to be relaxing because it‘s not focusing on meaning or depth, just having an imagination. I think this poem would be a nice read aloud, and it‘s easy to visualize in your head. Shel Silverstein is definitely a favorite. #UCFWaltersLit - poem

Brookegamble @Seans_h I love this poem! Just like you said, it's not too sappy or overwhelming for younger students and could be the perfect introduction to a poetry unit! #UCFWaltersLit 6y

I am Helen Keller | Brad Meltzer
post image

I am Helen Keller is a biography written by Brad Meltzer. Helen Keller lost both her sight and hearing when she was only 19 months old. She had a teacher named Anne Sullivan who during one of their first lessons, gave Keller a doll and teached her how to spell ‘doll‘. I liked this book because it‘s children friendly and the use of pictures and comic type strips make the story engaging. #UCFWaltersLit -biography

Erica.rivera @Seans_h The story about Helen Keller is very interesting just from your description. I wouldn't mind reading another book that looks like a comic just like El Deafo. I will definitely consider checking this book out. This will be great for students to read about someone who lost two of their senses that are very important! Thank you for sharing. (edited) 6y

Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry is a historical fiction book written by Mildred D. Taylor about an African American family living in rural Mississippi during a time of racial prejudice. I started this book a long time ago and finished it just recently. I found this book to be a mature read although it was first introduced to me in middle school. The context of the book is very open and it was eye opening. #UCFWaltersLit - historical fiction

Brittney3 @Seans_h I️ read this book in middle school and enjoyed it. Opened up to my eyes to a lot of different things. 6y

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a Modern Fantasy written by Kelly Barnhill. This book initially interested me because it is not something I would normally read. The story follows Xan, who accidentally fed Luna moonlight instead of starlight, in which Luna becomes enmagicked. I thought this book was interesting and a good read. #UCFWaltersLit - Modern Fantasy

Flowers for Algernon | Daniel Keyes
post image

Flowers for Algernon is a science fiction book by Daniel Keyes about a man named Charlie Gordon who is developmentally lacking and has the opportunity to undergo a procedure to increase his intelligence. This procedure has already been done on a laboratory mouse named Algernon with incredible results. I read this book in high school and thought it was very intriguing. #UCFWaltersLit - Science Fiction

Erica.rivera @Seans_h This book sounds very interesting. Students would definitely become engaged in the story line and how the character gets smarter from a Laboratory procedure. Are there any lesson plans that goes with this book? That would be an interesting lit circle conversation starter. (edited) 6y
