A Spindle Splintered
A Spindle Splintered | Alix E. Harrow
"A vivid, subversive and feminist reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, where implacable destiny is no match for courage, sisterhood, stubbornness and a good working knowledge of fairy tales." Katherine Arden It's Zinnia Gray's twenty-first birthday, which is extra-special because it's the last birthday she'll ever have. When she was young, an industrial accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness, just that no-one has lived past twenty-one. Her best friend Charm is intent on making Zinnia's last birthday special with a full sleeping beauty experience, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, something strange and unexpected happens, and she finds herself falling through worlds, with another sleeping beauty, just as desperate to escape her fate. Got this book from my Creepy Christmas swap partner (thank you so much!). A unique twist on the old damsel in distress version of Sleeping Beauty, I give this high marks for friendship over romance, LGBTQ+ friendly, fatal/chronic illness visibility, and female characters who find the strength to make their story their own. I recommend to any woman who struggles & feels like her life is not within her control. Take your story back! 💓

Super short, fun and sapphic re-imagining of “Sleeping Beauty”. A little too short for me. I struggled to connect with the main character and I enjoyed the storytelling but part of this fairytale trope is simplicity. However, I think I prefer more The Wood and the Woodsman style fairytales. But for a academic look at fairytales, it‘s a nice think piece.

I really enjoyed this feminist retelling of Sleeping Beauty which turns everything on its head, throws in the multiverse, and sees women taking charge of their own destinies. Absolutely loved the inclusion of Arthur Rackham‘s illustrations…after some modifications, of course. A novella, this is a fast, fun read.

elkeOriginal I enjoyed this too! Glad it is a series 😉 3w

LOVE a good fairytale re-telling, and this one had some interesting angles. I actually wish it had been a little longer, but it was a satisfying story and Harris nailed the ending (I was afraid she wouldn‘t).

I wasn‘t really sure what to expect with this one. Overall, I liked it. It was a quick, dark fairytale retelling. It ended on a hopeful not, but like not too hopeful. I think Alix E Harrow might be slowly becoming an auto read author for me.

I‘ve never read any ‘twisted‘ or revised fairy tales before, so this was a new genre to me. I wasn‘t sure before I started but figured it was only short (3.5 hours on audio) so I might as well give it a go.

This is based on Sleeping Beauty and, actually, I really enjoyed it. I do think it‘s a bit simplistic / basic for the #ToB though; there‘s nothing particularly groundbreaking/special about it but maybe that‘s just because it‘s not my genre.

Cinfhen Ohhh, a short audio…that‘s my jam 🎶😁 2mo
Ruthiella I put this one on hold at the library. I‘ve heard good things and the length definitely encourages me to try it! Retold fairytales aren‘t really my thing either, but I am willing to be converted. 2mo
BkClubCare I thought it was fun. 🤩 2mo
Megabooks I hate retold fairy tales, so I‘ll take a pass unless it makes the shortlist. Great review! 2mo

I wasn‘t too sure about this because fairy tale retellings have been hit or miss for me and I‘m not crazy about science fiction/fantasy. But this was fun! I think how short it was helped, the story had to keep moving. It was also quite funny and the drawings throughout are so lovely!

Frothy fun spun around a solid feminist core, with a multiverse of queer, not-sleeping princesses that resemble a “mismatched set of Valkyries” facing down fatal illness, a prince who‘s more of a “sentient cleft chin” than a hero, and… whatever else impedes their self-actualization. Novella-length #audiobook read by Amy Landon.

#BookReport #WeeklyForecast

I didn‘t read much this last week. My 3 read were short fast reads with only I Can Make this Promise planned for #MGBuddyRead. I liked the tagged book best. I put Villette aside to concentrate on Dr. Z which I didn‘t touch all week.

This week I WILL catch up on the Wilkerson buddy read, finish the Zafon for #AuthorAMonth and make progress on Z. Beyond that I can‘t predict. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cinfhen @Well-ReadNeck was just talking about your tagged book & I was wondering if I‘d like it… I‘m not sure it‘s my thing but I may give it a shot 2mo

Not. A. Fan. I don‘t know if it‘s the smacking about the head and face with pop culture references or the length ( short people less than 120 pages) or the overworked effort into making this one matter. Pick one or all in any event it fell flat. Which is sad as I was looking forward to her feminist twist on a retelling of sleeping beauty. Even the illustrations on every page wasn‘t enough to save it.

kamoorephoto Bummer! 2mo
KristiAhlers @kamoorephoto I was so disappointed! I looked forward to this so much. I loved her book Once and Future Witches so figured she‘d knock this out out of the park. Sigh. I mean some are truly enjoying it so there is that. 2mo

A modern Sleeping Beauty falls through the multiverse into a more classic Sleeping Beauty tale, & promptly decides fuck that noise & sets off to rescue them both.

This is a clever subversion of the fairy tale that nods to countless retellings. With unexpected turns, thoughtful inclusivity, curses that aren‘t really curses, and a space princess, this delighted me & I immediately went to see if there is going to be a 2nd & preordered it. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

ozma.of.oz And there‘s a pop culture reference towards the end where I laughed so hard I almost choked. 😆 2mo

I didn't LOVE it, hence the So-So.

Last year I read Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space by Amanda Leduc. I felt echoes of that work here. The idea of reclaiming these old sexist and ableist tales is enticing. However, a Spindle Splintered just missed the mark for me. I almost think the brevity of it is what holds it back. I would have preferred the story and characters a bit more fleshed out. Beautiful cover and artwork. ⭐⭐⭐

Confession: Sleeping Beauty is my favorite fairy tale…which, according to the beginning of Zinnia‘s story, makes me a dying girl (!) and also a lover of the worst fairy tale ever. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Despite this, I loved this story! Amazing retelling, full of some wickedly clever princesses, besties, and a desire for a fuller life, not to mention honoring inclusivity and recognizing one‘s true self. The illustrations are fun too!

Hooked_on_books I‘m hit or miss with retellings, but I really enjoyed this one! 3mo

DGRachel The Disney version of Sleeping Beauty is one of my favorite animated films, but I‘ve never read the original fairytale. My understanding is it‘s very dark and disturbing so it would probably ruin the film for me. 3mo
Librarybelle @DGRachel Most of my knowledge of Sleeping Beauty also comes from the Disney film, admittedly. You learn a bit about the various versions of the fairy tale in this book, including the original, which does sound very dark and disturbing. 3mo
DGRachel I admit, though, that I love the original Little Mermaid so much more than the Disney film and that one is dark, too. It‘s been a favorite since I was 6 or 7. 😳 3mo
Librarybelle @DGRachel The Disney films certainly make everything seem happy! I am fascinated by the original, darker stories behind the Disnified films. One of those things on the to read list - see the “evolution” of some of these fairy tales brought to life by Disney. 3mo
KathyWheeler I read the original stories when I was a kid, so I was shocked by the Disney movies. 😄. I was always saying, “But what about [whatever terrible and gross thing that happened in the story]?” It‘s a wonder people didn‘t worry more about me. 3mo
Librarybelle @KathyWheeler Haha! I think that‘s awesome you read the originals first. 3mo

I wanted to love this modern fairy tale retelling of Sleeping Beauty, but it did leave me feeling a bit flat, which may have been due to the abbreviated novella length of the story.

Zinnia is the victim of an environmental disaster and suffers from a rare and lethal genetic disorder as a result. Obsessed with Sleeping Beauty, she finds herself transported to an alternate reality after pricking her finger on a spindle on her 21st birthday.

🎧 I loved this 128 page novella from The Fractured Fables series. The author also wrote The Ten Thousand Doors of January & The Once & Future Witches.

An industrial accident at an early age means Zinnia won‘t live to see her 22nd birthday. Her BFF Charm plans a Sleeping Beauty themed party for her 21st birthday including a tower with a SPINDLE!

👑👑👑👑👑

Twainy Well a prick occurs, multiple universes open up & Zinnia becomes the catalyst for many beauties named after flowers to unify and take control of their futures. LGBTQ+
