Nowhere Girl
Nowhere Girl: A Memoir of a Fugitive Childhood | Cheryl Diamond
23 posts | 26 read | 21 to read
An absolutely breathless read. Nowhere Girl is a courageous, heart-breaking, and beautifully written story of a girl doing everything in her power to protect the ones she loves. Paul Haggis, Academy Award-winning writer/director of Crash, Million Dollar Baby, and Casino Royale By the age of nine, I will have lived in more than a dozen countries, on five continents, under six assumed identities. Ill know how a document is forged, how to withstand an interrogation, and most important, how to disappear . . . Wild, heart-wrenching, and unexpectedly funny, Nowhere Girl is an inspiring coming-of-age memoir about running for freedom against the odds. To the young Cheryl Diamond, life felt like one big adventure, whether she was hurtling down the Himalayas in a rickety car or mingling with underworld fixers. Her family appeared to be an unbreakable gang of five. One day they were in Australia, the next South Africa, the pattern repeating as they crossed continents, changed identities, and erased their pasts. What Diamond didnt yet know was that she was born into a family of outlaws fleeing from the highest international law enforcement agencies, a family with secrets that would eventually catch up to all of them. By the time she was in her teens, Diamond had lived dozens of lives and lies, but as she grew, love and trust turned to fear and violence, and her familythe only people she had in the worldbegan to unravel. She started to realize that her life itself might be a big con, and the people she loved, the most dangerous of all. With no way out and her identity burned so often that she had no proof she even existed, all that was left was a girl from nowhere. Surviving would require her to escape, and to do so Diamond would have to unlearn all the rules she grew up with. Like The Glass Castle meets Catch Me If You Can, Nowhere Girl is an impossible-to-believe true story of self-discovery and triumph.

Meh. It was fine. Unbelievable story, obviously. And I wanted to scream at people throughout. While the narrator was great, I would have loved to have heard the author read it - but I'm sure there were reasons that she didn't.

WOW!! Im still catching my breath from this INSANE memoir that had me gripped from the very beginning. Cheryl grew up in the most unusual and chaotic family. Parents and two siblings who were literally fugitives from the law. Cheryl didn‘t know from whom or why they were constantly changing identities and continents until much later in her life. With an over controlling narcissistic father & a passive mother Cheryl lived on the edge 👇🏽

Cinfhen until it all came crashing down upon her and her family. This book is another one for my new favorite new genre

In the same vein as The Glass Castle and Educated, though Nowhere Girl is less about physical abuse and more about manipulation, but each of these authors share incredible childhood experiences. In Nowhere Girl, Cheryl (a new name) takes readers through multiple countries & scenarios where she‘s expected to lie about her family and their background. Much is revealed about her origin story later in the book as well as why her family is on the run.

Chelsea.Poole #roll100 pick for July! @PuddleJumper (edited) 2y
MaggieCarr Read this memoir in tandem with a YA title that was so much more believable when paired together 2y
Chelsea.Poole @MaggieCarr thanks! I‘ll have to give that one a shot. This was out there, but I just went with it for the most part 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y

How many is too many books for a 10 day cabin trip?? 🤔 How many do you think I packed?? 🤣 Starting this one, which came highly recommended!

Grrlbrarian What is a ‘too many?‘ There isn‘t one unless you‘ve made the floor collapse 😂 2y
ravenlee The limit does not exist! 2y
kstadt929 @Grrlbrarian @ravenlee 🤣 I love these answers!!!!! 📚 The floor is still standing and they did all fit in the car 🫢 2y

It‘s an inevitable comparison, but having read “Educated,” “The Glass Castle,” and this book, I like this one the least. I find the limits of my credulity stretched to the breaking point after reading about so many unbelievable stories. The pacing was also really off. We get extensive details from each year when she was a young child and then whole years are skipped when she is a young adult. TW for abuse and sexual assault.

Wow. This is a memoir that reads like suspense. Recommended by a friend - thank you! it is intense, the story of the life of a woman who grows up as a fugitive.
Warnings for child & spousal abuse.

A memoir of a young girl whose parents are fugitives and travel across 5 continents to escape capture. Finished it in one day but towards the end it got a little hokey. Great read for young adults or those looking for different cultural experiences.

This memoir was so completely off the chains, that it defies credibility a bit. But, putting that aside, the story was unputdownable. The #audiobook was a good narration.

I‘m not sure how much of this memoir actually happened and there are some super triggering scenes involving abuse and gaslighting. But I couldn‘t take my mind off this book and it held my attention throughout.

This book is about a family who is on the run from the mothers father who threatened to take the children away. So as they hop from country to country and city to city it is up to the children to make sure they have their story straight of who they are. I found this fascinating and intriguing through out the whole book.

Book was decent for a memoir. I just find it hard to believe. Reading almost like it was James Frey writing it. It was hard to believe everything actually happened.

Megabooks Totally agree! 3y
tanya1512 @Megabooks my question is where is the Dad and Frank now? 3y
Megabooks I‘m curious about that too. 3y

I heard Cheryl/Harbhajan speak in a webinar earlier this year around the time I read Tess Sharpe's The Girls I've Been, which fascinated me. Unlike that fictional YA title, this memoir kept me on the edge of my seat. So many parallels to other narcissistic and cult books I've read over the years. From a readers perspective you can feel all that is wrong with the family dynamics and living in fear, while also suffering from Stockholm syndrome ↩️

MaggieCarr ...in also not wanting to escape into the unknowns of the world that is cast in such a scary light. At times, I questioned how accurately Cheryl/Harbhajan could remember dialog of long ago conversations only to recall sections where she was coached to do just that to aid in their run. 3y

I was completely captivated by this memoir of a woman who spent her entire childhood on the run. It read like a fast-paced suspense novel for me - I was glued to each page. A super satisfying memoir! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #arc

I wanted this book about living on the lam with a con man father and codependent mother to be exciting, but I just never really got that invested in it. It was more a series of things that happened to her rather than the true reflection a great (or even good) memoir requires. So-so bordering on pan. #audiobook

Cinfhen Disappointing 😣 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yeah, it took me a minute to figure out why I didn‘t like it, but it‘s very first A, then B, then C…. Plus, I don‘t doubt it as much as Educated, but I wonder if it‘s a bit exaggerated. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y

Happy Publication Day!!! This memoir reads like fiction- it‘s fast-paced and impossible to put down! The author relays her childhood on the run, across continents and decades. Secrets, violence and outright lies unfold as she starts to chase after the truth while trying to hold her fragmented family together. Heartbreaking and riveting, it does leave a few things up in the air- but it‘s a hard one to put down!! Thank you to @AlgonquinBooks

EKonrad Did I miss what happened to her brother? I feel like I‘m being so dense. Did he die? Help! 😩 3y
TorieStorieS @EKonrad That frustrated me so much too!! I think he must have- but they never talked about it?? I was definitely left wondering about him!! 3y
EKonrad Okay, I‘m super glad it wasn‘t just me missing something! Lol 3y

4.5🌟What a wild ride this book is! Imagine being born into a family of outlaws fleeing international law, being constantly on the run, changing identities and moving from different continents and countries, never being able to stay anywhere long enough to make friends, living a giant lie. Sounds insane right?! I was utterly facinated by this coming of age story that I flew right through this book. #pubday #bookreview #bookblogger #bookblog
