The Girls: A Novel | Emma Cline

Mehso-so

There was a lot I liked about this book. The writing alone was beautiful. The main character, Evie, had nice depths and seemed fully realized. But the book ultimately fell a little short for me. It just seemed relentlessly downbeat. There wasn't a black cloud over the book, but there was a light gray one. I'm really glad I read The Girls, but it left me a little sad and empty. And not in the good ways.

Megabooks I felt ok about it for different reasons, but I'm excited to read whatever she writes next. 7y

Amazing book. One of the best sci-fi love stories I've read.

Just a paragraph, really early in the book, but it really sums up how I feel about fatherhood. Loving this whole book so far. As my wife, @Kleonard , pointed out it's very Fringe-like. In a great way!

I enjoyed this book until the end. I'm okay with ambiguity, I really am. But imagine this: I write a book about kids being born with twenty fingers. The entire story is about how this impacts everyone and theories on what's causing it. But by the end of the book I don't explain what the cause is or why it's important. This was almost a Pan. But I really liked things until THERE WAS NO FRICKING EXPLANATION FOR THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE STORY!

Kleonard 😂 8y
Yournewfriendsams I totally agree with you. We got absolutely nothing at the end of this one. 👎🏽 8y
Marla That sucks. It leaves the reader so frustrated. I will make sure not to read this book. 😡 8y

aaronleonard The more I think about this one, the more I'm thinking its a pan. It's well written, but there's no third act to the story. 8y
she_barks Totally agree!!! 8y
MrBook 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Sequels/prequels in the works maybe? 8y
aaronleonard @MrBook I'll bet you're right. But it's an incomplete book. 8y
MrBook @BookBabe and I read "The Memory Painter" recently, and it totally leaves you hanging in a very awakened way. It's like the momentum is building and all of a sudden the connection breaks. NOOOOO!!!! 8y

Annie and I are enjoying Bird Box so far. I'm curious to see where it's going. Annie doesn't care as long as she can nap.

Kleonard Does Annie find it scary so far? 😄 8y

I really liked this book. Sure, I figured out part of the mystery early on but not all the reasons. And the backwards way the story unfolded was a really cool literary technique.

she_barks Is this another one you stole from @Kleonard 's nightstand? 8y

While I'm ultimately glad I read this, things just didn't come together for me. The book was wholly Dickensian in feel and the characters were fully fleshed out, but the story dragged in places. Annie liked it because she could snuggle next to me as I read, but that's every book, so...

MaryAnn1 Annie looks unimpressed with your book selection as well🙂 8y
aaronleonard Annie is a tougher book critic than I am! 8y
Kleonard I liked it more than you did, but I appreciated your comments. 8y

The Mirage | Matt Ruff
Mehso-so

I have loved Matt Ruff since my wife introduced me to his first book, Fool On The Hill. He never writes the same book twice. The Mirage was a pretty big miss for me. It's Ruff's great style, but there's something missing. Robert Ferrigno did something similar (and better) with his Assassins trilogy.

Kleonard Could not agree with you more. 8y

Overall review - CSI: Downton Abbey. After the first 20 or so pages I wasn't sure how I felt, but ultimately I really liked this book. The time travel conceit was was a a little iffy, but it was a well written story with engaging characters.

she_barks Maybe we'll learn more of the time travel details in the next book. 8y
Kleonard Now I can start reading this one again. 😂 8y

Bailedbailed

I fully admit I should probably give this book more of a chance, but after less than ten UBER detailed pages I'm bailing.

Devoured this in one sitting. I literally could not put it down. Intriguing story written in a very interesting way. I can't wait for more.

she_barks @aaronleonard I listened to it and then bought it for my kindle and in hardback. I can't get enough either. 8y

I was really on the fence between so-so and pick with this one. It was and interesting mix of magic and technology, but it was ultimately a little fluffy for me. I wholly enjoyed it, but I wanted more details, more story.

The Fireman | Joe Hill
Mehso-so

I felt this book could have really used another good edit. There was a lot that just didn't further the plot. Pared down (by maybe half) this wouldn't have been half bad, other than being wholly predictable. The repetitive King references got on my nerves, too.

she_barks I'm enjoying this, but agree about the length. 8y
