Under the Harrow
Under the Harrow: A Novel | Flynn Berry
Once I started reading Under the Harrow, I couldn't stop. It's like Broadchurch written by Elena Ferrante. Claire Messud, author of The Woman Upstairs I read Under the Harrow through the nightI couldnt put it down. Alex Marwood, author of The Wicked Girls When Nora takes the train from London to visit her sister in the countryside, she expects to find her waiting at the station, or at home cooking dinner. But when she walks into Rachels familiar house, what she finds is entirely different: her sister has been the victim of a brutal murder. Stunned and adrift, Nora finds she cant return to her former life. An unsolved assault in the past has shaken her faith in the police, and she cant trust them to find her sisters killer. Haunted by the murder and the secrets that surround it, Nora is under the harrow: distressed and in danger. As Noras fear turns to obsession, she becomes as unrecognizable as the sister her investigation uncovers. A riveting psychological thriller and a haunting exploration of the fierce love between two sisters, the distortions of grief, and the terrifying power of the past, Under the Harrow marks the debut of an extraordinary new writer. From the Trade Paperback edition.

I loved Northern Spy, so I went back to Berry‘s debut and unfortunately it‘s half baked. The big red herring is super obvious, the main character is too quickly fixated on something that doesn‘t make sense, and too much of the plot is packed into the very end. I‘m glad to know she improved with time, as I‘ll be watching for her next book.

TheLudicReader I DNF this…I just couldn‘t get into it all. Sounds like I didn‘t miss anything. 4mo
Anna40 I agree but I thought the loss of the sister/the grief over death of a sibling was very well captured 4mo
Hooked_on_books @Anna40 I agree. I actually think if that had been the focus instead of trying to make it into a twisty thriller it would have been a better book. 4mo
Hooked_on_books @TheLudicReader Yeah, you made a good choice! Just stick with Northern Spy, it‘s much better. 4mo

Here's my #bookspin and #doublespin list for April. @thearomaofbooks

My focus is black spines on my shelves with authors last names A-J. I did find a number of these available on audio through Libby, so I will not be reading all of these in print. The #roll100 and Netgalley books are all on kindle.

I decided to listen to this because I had liked Northern Spy by the same author. The audiobook kept me listening, but in the end I was a little confused about what exactly happened. This one is similar to Northern Spy in that it features a woman trying to figure out what happened to her sister.

vlwelser That looks good. It sounds even better than Northern Spy. Which I definitely liked. 3y

This book will definitely have you hooked. The short chapters add to this. Sometimes I felt like some info wasn‘t necessary but then I saw that it‘s all part of Berry‘s plans to make an excellent whodunit! You learn so much about the sisters, individually and their relationship, and begin to question Nora as a reliable narrator. If it ended differently I would‘ve given it 3 stars, but the ending made me give a solid 4 stars. I love Berry‘s work!

Nora leaves London to visit her sister in the Oxfordshire countryside & finds her dead. This is an excellent thriller, complete with an unreliable narrator ( which I love) .. well written, compulsive reading. The ending was ‘ meh‘ , but I didn‘t care because I very much enjoyed the journey.
I‘ll definitely look up other books by Flynn Berry

When Nora visits her sister, she finds her sister has been brutally murdered. She decides to stay & find out who did this. I found the book to be very atmospheric, suspenseful, well-written & kept me guessing. Switches back & forth between the past & present. Ending was a real surprise. The book was the author's debut and I look forward to reading her 2nd book, A Double Life. I would recommend this one to those who love mystery and suspense books.

Decent debut. MC‘s sister is murdered and MC searches for answers, becoming consumed and finally a suspect herself. Recommendation via Crimereads.com . Listened to the audio and I think I would have enjoyed it more in print. Going to try the second book by this author before I decide. 3/5 ⭐️

Wow! Taut. Her sister is murdered in the time she stopped for a late lunch because she missed her train. As Nora searches out the murderer & tells the tale, you even begin to wonder if she‘s misdirecting you & she did it herself. Well written & suspenseful.

This short audiobook was a pretty good murder mystery. This is not a genre I often enjoy, but I liked the pace and writing in this one. I also liked that the answer to the mystery wasn‘t something convoluted and unlikely and yet still had me guessing until the end. Also, excellent narration on the audiobook.

Mdargusch I really liked this one too. I also liked the next two in the series. 6y

I loved the narrator of this murder mystery. There were many twists and turns and I did not see the ending coming. So that is always a plus when I read a mystery. There was at least one time when I said "aha! I knew it!" only to be proven wrong. #ripxii

Nora finds her sister murdered and then... then there is a whole lot of tension. Then the book ends, really quickly. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. It wasn't what I was expecting, but it wasn't satisfying.

"The only way I can think to begin is--my sister was murdered. My sister was murdered."

A tautly woven psychological thriller that kept me on my toes. Did not see that ending coming. My only complaint: I wish there had been more of the sister's relationship, just a little more depth. #sistersister #crimefiction

The strongest aspect is the portrayal of loss and grief. Nora's mourning and strive to find the killer is the most interesting part of the book. The sexist lines of police questioning towards women is aggravatingly realistic. Like many mysteries, the red herring is obvious and there are enough clues laid out for the reader to figure out a motive. Although it's short, the pacing is incredibly slow in parts. #2017Book26 #audiobook #mystery #bookclub

If you like artsy-intense psychological thrillers then you will enjoy this one. Not the most difficult who-dun-nit but very interesting and leaves you wondering if they truly caught the right person, even after you finish the book. It will also have you questioning what kind of messed up life this author had in order to write this. The imagery will stay with you for a long while.

I listened to this interesting murder mystery mostly while running in the snow and wind when I would have preferred curling up with my cat. I really thought that I had figured out the identity of the murderer, but was proved wrong. The writing is very good, the characters unlikeable, and the plot puzzling. I enjoyed it immensely. I was so immersed that the miles just flew by.

I read this in less than a day. It's a good page turner, but there were aspects of it that I didn't like. Spoiler: I do not like a book where an unreliable narrator is able to out sleuth the police and hand them the criminal practically with a bow.
