Bird Box: A Novel | Josh Malerman
Something is out there . . .Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, Malorie has long dreamed of fleeing to a place where her family might be safe. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboatblindfoldedwith nothing to rely on but Malorie's wits and the children's trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odysseya trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motley group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outsideand confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman's breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

#CreepyChristmas questions! Feel free to participate even if you aren‘t in the swap 🖤🎄

💀 The weirder the better
💀 Candyman, Rec, Return of the Living Dead
💀 Bird Box gave me a panic attack. I usually think ghost stories are creepier than monster ones though.
💀 TV horror is hit or miss for me. I loved The Haunting of Hill House though.
💀 Either
💀 What got you into horror?

Remember to visit other posts and answer their no.6 question!

i-am-papercrane I got into horror just because...I don‘t know, I watched Signs as a kid and that was the scariest thing for me. And then I got older and I just loved being scared and watching campy movies... 4w
veritysalter As a teen (in the 90s) I loved the Point Horror books, and Christopher Pike - I‘ve loved reading horror ever since. 4w

ulrichyumiodd I enjoy horror as a literary genre, but rarely as a movie genre! I‘m not quite sure what got me interested in horror books - probably curiosity. I used to read some as a kid/teen, then stopped for a while. 4w

I finally read this! I found the tension great & the character development to be surprisingly filled in for such a short novel. Having read some of the criticisms, I feel that perhaps I filled in a lot with my imagination, but I was well-satisfied. I immediately proceeded to watch the movie... which was very good.. though some of the huge differences are curious... Of course, the book was better. ;)

Thank you @Jess#halloweengoespostal 2017! ♥️

Chrissyreadit I really enjoyed this- my kind of horror.... 1mo
marleed I liked this too. I read it the day after I saw the movie. I much preferred the kids in the book. The movie failed to capture their heightened senses from a lifetime of blindfolds. But I preferred Sanda Bullock‘s take on the MC - she was more badass in the movie. 1mo

Finally read it, and BEFORE seeing the movie. I‘ve had this a while, had it signed by Josh Malerman and worked hard to not even watch trailers to not have images of the adaptation so I could distance myself from being affected by them (it was hard).

Malerman does a great job of building tension, and creates fear when the reasons aren‘t even clear. Fear of the unknown is pretty terrifying.

⭐️⭐️ This one was honestly just boring for me.I don‘t do suspenseful scary stuff very well so I was hesitant on picking this one up, but honestly there‘s only like two scenes that have cringe to them and there really not even that horrible just gross 🤷🏻‍♀️I also want to point out trigger warnings for death, suicide, giving birth(kinda descriptive in a scene) animal deaths, gouging of eye(mentions, not descriptive)

I read this after reading a reddit thread in which it was recommended, and enjoyed it immensely. It was a steady-paced journey from beginning to end, and the concept of having to conjure up mental images (instead of seeing it with your eyes) of something you‘re trying to focus on adds an interesting immersion element as you read this book. The feeling of dread and uncertainty persisted for some time after the last page!

I usually don‘t reach for the horror genre, but since it was a movie, I thought I‘d read it before watching. Not only is it a quick read, but it honestly kept me entertained. I found myself really engaged with each character even though there wasn‘t a large amount of backstory to each one. I did appreciate the elaborations on some of the major players. The chapters flowed seamlessly and the descriptions were plentiful. Definitely recommend.

I watched the movie on Netflix and loved it. Then I found out it is a book so I bought it. Omg! I now hate the movie! There are so many things that were changed for the movie script. I‘m almost halfway through this book now and it‘s so hard to put it down so I can get back to work!

Jennick2004 I‘ve had the book on my list for a long time...hated the movie lol. Praying the book is better 🤷‍♀️ 6mo
FantasyDreams @Jennick2004 the book is sssoooo much better. It explains things better than the movie. Plus there are (so far that I‘ve read) so many scenes in the movie that didn‘t happen in the book. It‘s almost like they changed it for time reasons. (Which I think movies should never do. They should just make multiples parts IMO). 6mo

I enjoyed this book until the end. I didn't like the ending but I think that's because I wanted a more dramatic ending. The book was great! It had you on your toes wondering what was going to happen next. I still want to know what those things were and where they came from.

Kaye I really liked this too, but also thought the ending was sorta like getting a hole in your balloon and it deflates by the end. Although I‘ve often wondered how else it could‘ve ended that would‘ve been “ better” and can‘t really think of an ending if I could change it myself. 6mo

The movie trailer caught my attention, I was skeptical because I thought it was a horror film. Of course, before watching it I had to read the book. Though it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. After, finishing the book I turned around and immediately watched the movie.

This is a book worth the hype!

Malorie finds herself as one of the few survivors when something so terrifying roams the Earth that people are forced to wear blindfolds. Once this unnamed “something” is seen, people go mad, literally taking others‘ lives or their own.

Pregnant, Malorie is forced with many tough choices of how to continue in this new world.

The true meaning of a page turner, Bird Box is worthy of five stars!

hjreviews I always find it so bittersweet when I find out movies I want to watch are based on books. I‘m glad and happy that the authors creativity can reach a wider audience and is being celebrated, but now I feel like I owe it to them to read the book first, to experience the world they way they originally intended. And that just adds more to my already out of control reading list. 7mo
KristenDuck @hjreviews I haven‘t watched the movie yet! But I know so many people who did. The writing style for the book is incredible - makes you almost feel the intensity but the short sentences. 7mo
BooksAndYarn I made my husband wait until I read the book before we watched the movie, and I'm happy I did. Movies are never as good as the book, but I like to think they bring more attention to the books and maybe inspire someone to actually read it who perhaps otherwise wouldn't 7mo
KristenDuck @BooksAndYarn now that you‘ve seen both do you still prefer the book? 7mo

This is a hard question. I really liked Bird Box, but felt the ending sorta left you feeling like a balloon 🎈 with a slow leak. By the end, you felt a bit deflated. BarbaraBB @Billypar Yes, you‘re right, the book was much more suspenseful. 8mo

Pickpick

I've not seen the film but I really enjoyed the book. The premise is very unique and leads to extremely tense scenes where there might be nothing going on or there might actually be extreme danger... You can't tell blind. I like how the characters have no actual idea what is going on rather than everything being spelt out. Keeps with the theme of the fear of the unknown. Also horribly violent at times but not in a cheap way.

rohit-sawant Loved this one! 8mo

I‘m a horror movie wimp. Even though I‘ve read the book, and know exactly what is going to happen, I still had to stop halfway through because it got too dark out. 😂😂

Jerdencon Lol - that's me - I can read the scariest books but can't watch any of the movies! 🤣 8mo
Beatlefan129 I was so relieved that there were some things they left out of the movie version—I would not have been able to handle it 8mo

The books I‘m keeping out of the storage (half of which are signed by the author) while the rest has to go packed away 😐😋📚📚 but at least I have them for later 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
