I've been eyeing this book for the 5 year since I got it for the library and finally got around to picking it up yesterday. I could not put it down! It was such a beautifully written, quiet story that just got under my skin. Soooooo good!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

It is Kansas 2065 and Adri has been selected to be a colonist on Mars. However, weeks before the launch she finds a journal of a girl who lived in her house in the 1930‘s. This girl lived through the Dust Bowl and Adri needs to know what happened to her.
So, this book is told in three point of views. I wish we got more about the Electric. I found myself not connecting with the characters. It was definitely a short, fast read.

Finished this book this week and turned in my Library‘s Summer Reading Book Bingo! I had 3 possible bingos! It‘s the first time in my recollection that our library has done a summer reading activity for adults. For #BFCr3, I met my step goal with 37,254 steps and read 6.35 hours. Anyone else have a problem with the timelines in Anderson‘s book? BTW I‘m not left-handed but my husband is.

Three settings, three characters - Adrin in 2065, Catherine in 1934 and Lenore in 1919. All face adversity and all are linked in some way. I really enjoyed this book - a bit confusing at first , but it all comes together in the end. It was similar to doing a jigsaw puzzle; the picture gets clearer, the more pieces you connect (the more pages you read).

What a different twist on space travel! The main character is preparing to go to Mars in 2045. Along the way, she finds an unknown connection to family, an old woman named Lily. Lily lives on a farm in Kansas, where we find some letters from 2 characters from the past. The first, Catherine, is a teen during the dust bowl. The second, Lenore, is a teen after WW1 in Britain who wants to reunite with her best friend who moved to the US. Its a ⬇️

rjsthumbelina ...beautiful book about what it means to be human. Deep dives into the ideas of grief, connection with another living being, connection to a place, and the importance of relationships other than romantic ones. 4.5 🌟 1st book compketed for the #bookjunkietrials for #dwarfmount, with just a hint of romance in both Catherine's and Lenore's stories 5y

At the 40% mark on this one and really enjoying it. I‘ve been on a real YA kick...love it! It‘s funny how as a teen I read all adult books bc there was really very little teen material and now as an adult (ok, senior-I‘ll admit, still can‘t wrap my head around my age), I‘ve found a plethora of great books in YA!

Slajaunie I love YA as well. I am not young either. 6y
Melissa_J I also read adult books as a teen for the same reason, although I think at the time I probably still would have chosen to read adult fiction rather than YA had it been available. I do enjoy YA fantasy now, although I can‘t usually stand contemporary YA since I can‘t relate to the characters. 6y
KristinaRay I read more YA as an adult than I ever did as a teen. I was one of those teens who was snobby about teen stuff; I always wanted to act older than I was. So even if there had been a great selection of YA back then, I probably would have avoided them over principle. 🙄 6y

JanuarieTimewalker13 @KristinaRay I get it!! I was the same way...we had some teen books but I went for The Exorcist and Looking For Mr. Goodbar....yikes!!! Lol 6y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Melissa_J yes, I understand that. For me, it brings me back to teen years, and I really wish we had some of the hard hitters like Speak when I was young...also, books like The Boyfriend List would‘ve greatly helped me bc I knew nothing about the male gender, lol 6y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Slajaunie yes, it‘s a wonderful age classification with great reads! I learn from them...and some are so borderline, they can be adult also!! 6y
Bette You're not the only one. There are so many good YA books out there. Love 'em! (edited) 6y
RaimeyGallant That looks like my cat! :) 6y

Adri is a teenage, orphan training to be a Mars colonist. During the last months of training, she learns she has an elderly cousin Lily that she will be staying with until she leaves Earth. In Lily‘s home, Adri finds a journal from Catherine (1934) and letters from Lenore to Beth (1919). As she pores through the writings, Adri uncovers a forgotten chain of events. She also discovers her own feelings that have been locked away for most of her life.

Redy2trvl I originally chose this book for what I thought would be a science fiction story. That is not at all what this story is about. That was disappointing, but Adri‘s personal exploration into the past made up for it. I would have liked more backstory and depth of characters. This is between a pick and so-so for me. (edited) 6y

If I had known when I started this book that it was the same author as the Vanishing Season, I probably would not have read it.Not a full resolution. The midnight electric was barely part of the book and I had expected it to be more involved; it could have been removed completely and there would still be a story line, minus the resolution of course. The characters were developed well enough but the story wasn't. Something missing. Almost pan.

This was a 3/5 star read. It was good, but not great. I loved the historical component of this dual time story, but the contemporary (in this case futuristic) timeline was lacking. The author could have done a lot more with the Mars mission part of the plot and I wish she would have. That said, it was enjoyable and I wanted to see what happened to the historical characters. Overall, I'd recommend.

This is what our reviewer had to say about #MidnightattheElectric, " Jodi Lynn Anderson gives us three strong female friendships bound together by history and a tortoise.
