'What are the possibilities of my strength? That is a thought I have never had before. What if some morning as the old woman stood at the head of the staircase she were suddenly to feel a weight thrusting against the back of her legs? What if she were to lunge forward, grasping at the air, striking her thin skull against the edge of a stair? What would become of me if she were found unmoving at the bottom of the stairway?' Such are the thoughts of Baxter, a sociopathic bull terrier on the hunt for the perfect master, as he contemplates the demise of his first victim. The basis for the acclaimed 1989 film Baxter, Ken Greenhall's utterly chilling and long-unobtainable Hell Hound (1977) has earned a reputation as a lost classic of horror fiction. This first-ever reissue includes a new introduction by Grady Hendrix. 'An unsung classic of the bizarre that ranks with Crash and The Wasp Factory.' - Fright.com 'Deserves to be much more well-known and not simply as a "cult classic" . . . I cannot recommend it highly enough!' - Too Much Horror Fiction 'An author who has been criminally neglected by modern readers . . . It's time to start celebrating Ken Greenhall.' - Jonathan Janz

When we found out our nephew was to be named Baxter, my partner and I knew it was time to read Hell Hound! We thought we‘d give it to him when he grows up, but…we‘ll have to see. This cynical book abt a sociopathic dog and his Hitler-loving teen owner isn‘t for everyone. It is disturbing & often made me queasy, but it‘s also thoughtful and complex. I‘m impressed by what KG accomplished. It can be wry, occasionally lovely, but always really dark.

vivastory Wasn't there a movie based on this? It sounds familiar... 2y
Michael_Gee @vivastory Yes! It is French and was called Baxter. 2y
khooliha This was my first Ken Greenhall and it made me a fan. I still have like half of his small bibliography left, but I gotta savor these knife sharp books. 2y
Michael_Gee @khooliha Yes!! What a great way to describe his writing. I was surprised and impressed by how different this voice was from Childgrave. Definitely want to read all his work now. 2y
LeahBergen I‘ve read a couple of books by this author but not this one! 2y

I thought I would hate reading from a dog's perspective, and I really didn't! This is certainly a creepy book - not only with the scenarios presented, but also in how your loyalties shift over the course of the story... 🐕😨💀

A very disturbing novella about a neighborhood and the intertwining stories of the inhabitants, told through their lives and the life of an introspective bull terrier. The story makes you wonder what terrible things the people around you may be thinking or experiencing without your knowledge, as well as what your pet may really think about you.

Good, tense book. Almost more of a character study of the people around the dog than it was a "scary dog" book. I'm glad we have no stairs, because I'm sure Lily would've pushed us down them by now!

I cannot believe that the murderous dog wasn't the real villain. Wait, the shitty teen was a nazi, yes I can.

Michael_Gee I was so bummed he didn‘t get his throat ripped out. 2y
khooliha @Michael_Gee I was rooting so hard for that teen to die! 2y

As you can probably tell from the title, this isn‘t a heartwarming tearjerker about a boy and his dog. This book goes inside the mind of a sociopathic bull terrier. If you don‘t like reading about animals getting hurt or killed, then skip this. However, if you can stomach that, this is a very interesting book that tells a story from a different perspective. Despite the subject matter, it‘s easy to read because it‘s very well written.

The Bad Seed + The Wasp Factory with a dash of Cujo. It‘s not an easy read, but it is fascinatingly disturbing.
Thanks @ValancourtBooks for getting this back in print!

BekahB I really liked this book too! I‘m planning of buying the other 2 Greenhall books that Valancourt reissued - Elizabeth and Childgrave. 6y
LauraJ @BekahB Me too. Seems like something my local indie might have in stock. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼 6y

Lunch break! I‘m treating myself to stromboli from one of my favorite local pizza places. This is my absolute favorite meal! When I celebrate my birthday with my family, this is always on the menu. Spinach, shredded beef, and LOTS of cheese baked in French bread. So good!

Next up I‘m going to start Hell Hound. A horror story told from the perspective of a sociopathic bull terrier. I love this cover! It‘s a reissue from Valancourt Books. 🐶

LauraJ I miss midwestern food. Just started this book too! 6y
