On to my book club book for this Saturday. I always get to my book club books late but I tore through Into the Wild so I‘m hoping I‘ll do the same for this!
pickFinally finished Difficult Women. Roxane Gay is just so unbelievably talented. This collection of stories is a joy yet so hard to read at the same time. But it‘s so necessary for all of us to recognize how women are used by our society. Just so good. And this quote says it all I think.
pickAmazing and amazingly upsetting at the same time. It‘s hard to read, it makes you think all men are just using and abusing women for their own gain at every turn. But women stay strong and get through horrible, evil things. They remain loyal to the good things in their lives. Again hard to read but shouldn‘t be missed. It took me a month to finish, which I just did by reading the last few chapters aloud to my dog during a thunderstorm.
pickI really enjoyed this, there are three main characters and all the events revolve on them and how things have really gone wrong in their young lives. It wrapped up way too quickly and doesn‘t give a ton of resolution, but I‘m glad it didn‘t end the way I thought it would.
pickI‘m not sure what to say about this book yet. I certainly don‘t regret listening to it and would love for some more conservative Christians to read it. I‘m going to be pondering this for awhile, especially the need for community for people who are broken in some way, the people conservative Christians tend to rebuff, ignore, or actively try to keep down and how that is exactly the opposite of what Jesus showed in the Bible.

pickThis was a great read. Kolker devotes a chapter to each woman who died and really treats them like humans. He talked to a lot of the family, community members, and law enforcement, but didn‘t exploit them. The book brings together the facts but in a compelling way.
Not super stoked to see my former town of Wilmington in a book like this and described like this...but the book is still good.
pickGot on audio from my library because I only like listening to nonfiction 😁 It didn‘t get good reviews on Goodreads so I was a tiny bit leery but the books I love often don‘t have super high ratings. I started and finished this all in one day. I was fascinated by struggle of leaving the Amish faith and family and how it can draw you back. It didn‘t go into enough of the details of being Amish for me, but maybe that part was all there is to know.
I might actually finish this one before book club on Saturday!
pickIf you can remove your preconceived notions about death and the process that follows, this book is super interesting. You see several different cultures and how they deal with the aftermath and grieving. And learn about how like lots of things in America, death is a business and people are always looking for new ways to profit.
