Music Shop
Music Shop | Rachel Joyce
A love story and a journey through music, the exquisite and perfectly pitched new novel from the bestselling author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE TIMES (UK) It is 1988. On a dead-end street in a run-down suburb there is a music shop that stands small and brightly lit, jam-packed with records of every kind. Like a beacon, the shop attracts the lonely, the sleepless, and the adrift; Frank, the shop's owner, has a way of connecting his customers with just the piece of music they need. Then, one day, into his shop comes a beautiful young woman, Ilse Brauchmann, who asks Frank to teach her about music. Terrified of real closeness, Frank feels compelled to turn and run, yet he is drawn to this strangely still, mysterious woman with eyes as black as vinyl. But Ilse is not what she seems, and Frank has old wounds that threaten to reopen, as well as a past it seems he will never leave behind. Can a man who is so in tune with other people's needs be so incapable of connecting with the one person who might save him? The journey that these two quirky, wonderful characters make in order to overcome their emotional baggage speaks to the healing power of music--and love--in this poignant, ultimately joyful work of fiction. Praise for The Music Shop "Warmhearted, unusual and romantic, Rachel Joyce evokes the emotional power of your favorite record while underlining the importance of that forever-threatened little shop down a side street where music happens. . . . Joyce's gift is in using simple language to convey profound observations on human nature."--The Times "Whether on foot, as in her novel The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, or track by track, on this unlikely musical odyssey, Joyce excels in enveloping readers in epic journeys of lost connections and loving reunions."--Booklist "Joyce sets up a charming cast of characters, and her spirals into the sonic landscapes of brilliant musicians are delightful, casting a vivid backdrop for the quietly desperate romance between Frank and Ilse."--Kirkus Reviews"Rachel Joyce has established a reputation for novels that celebrate the dignity and courage of ordinary people and the resilience of the human spirit. . . . But what really elevates The Music Shop is Joyce's detailed knowledge of--and passion for--music."--The Guardian

🥰 I have never read a book like this before. I'm usually a fantasy girl. This book was amazing and so so cute. I feel warm, and I relate so much to Frank, the main character. To be so full of love for others but so oblivious to the fact that you are worthy of love. 10 out of 10. Will be buying this as Christmas gifts for friends.

Today‘s tag for #MOvember, #Music, brought to mind this book by Rachel Joyce. Whilst it isn‘t in the same class as The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (very little is) I enjoyed this book. Loved the setting of The Music Shop and the great group of characters created. A good romance that runs through it too. A bit of a cheesy ending scene, but secretly love it and it brought a smile to my face. Great musical references through the book.

The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce is a very quirky romance that will cause frustration, happiness, and a few tears.

While the romance is the key focus, this is also a wonderful tale about a tight-knit community made up of a wonderful cast of characters that I just couldn‘t get enough of!

4.5 ⭐️
A book for lovers of music, & lovers of love.
This is a bit like the Alchemist & Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant: if you‘re doing what you were born to do, you will find a way to succeed; & sometimes people know what you need better than you do.
Two notes:
Books with playlists should announce that upfront, not the end.
And music stores, take heed: offer listening parties like Frank hosts listening lessons. I‘ll be there 🙋🏻‍♀️

Audiobook narration for this one was great, but the story left me somewhat bored. It‘s meant to be a sweet, cozy love story set in a music shop. The characters were interesting, but the story felt very forced and predictable.

A quirky book for holiday reading that was ultimately a bit disappointing. I really loved how it talked about music and the small community feel of the street. And I loved Frank‘s devotion to his record store. It was charming at times but the plot line just took too long to get going and I never quite felt that “happy sigh” feeling when a good romance happens. So for me it‘s a 3.5 ⭐️ read.
