My friend just started reading this autobiography by the great Shirley Chisholm. Now it‘s on my list.

Brooklyn‘s own, daughter of Caribbean immigrants, she became America's first African-American Congresswoman.

I was somehow able to enjoy this as a kind of absurd soap opera, a dark fantasy. Some of it was indeed quite fascinating. And I will give Wolff real credit on this point: Many of his “burns” on these malevolent buffoons are entertainingly, even eloquently, phrased. Worth a read for those predisposed.

Agnes Martin's amazing minimalist artwork was recently the subject of a big retrospective at the Guggenheim in NYC. The show closed this past week. The link above is to a Martin biography, for those interested in her life and work.

The linked collection includes one of Freud's finest and most resonant essays, "Mourning and Melancholia."

Sadly, the great pessimist's words in this book -- many of the pieces written during a period of widespread international violence and uncertainty -- speak to our tenuous situation today.

Highly recommended. Freud was a superb writer, on top of everything else.

The Street Kids | Pier Paolo Pasolini
post image

New translation of a hard-to-find book. "Pasolini's THE STREET KIDS was heavily censored, criticized by professional critics, & lambasted by much of the general public upon its publication. But like many innovative works of art its undeniable force eventually led to it being universally acknowledged as a masterpiece. It is a moving tribute to an entire class of people in danger of being forgotten by art, by institutions, and by society at large."

Facsimile of the 1955 edition of this comic series, discovered in my neighborhood Barnes & Noble store. Apparently, recommended by some as a Spanish-language study supplement for relative beginners. The pictures help! And it includes lots of colloquialisms (they may be out-of-date by now, though). ;)

I taught this book in a college-prep class in New York City a number of years back. The students were mostly Caribbean immigrants with limited academic backgrounds. While they struggled with the language, they connected deeply with the story and themes. We had some incredible class discussions.

Brief but fascinating look at Marilyn Monroe's unconventional treatment by eminent Hollywood psychoanalyst Ralph Greenson. His efforts to help MM find love and acceptance ultimately failed, ending with her suicide. Greenson never got over losing her.

dogra The book, THE MISFIT, is a Kindle Single, and I couldn't find it in the Google database here. So for this post, I decided to link to Dr. Greenson's own book on psychoanalytic technique. 9y
