“Usually, when people talk about the “strength” of black women they are referring to the way in which they perceive black women coping with oppression. They ignore the reality that to be strong in the face of oppression is not the same as overcoming oppression, that endurance is not to be confused with transformation.” #bellhooks

I‘m kind of meh about this book. I mostly listened to the Audible version with narration by Christopher Evan Welch, which was mostly good, with a pointed exception for the godawful Italian accents in the last chapter. The story is poignant with moments of humor, and I did like the central conceit of a dog narrator. But there is more I hated than what I enjoyed- animal death, a brush with statutory rape, false rape accusations. Would not recommend.

Favorite line so far: “WHAT‘S A PIZZA‘S CALORIC COUNT IN THE FACE OF A PASSIONATE LESBIAN LOVE AFFAIR?”
...but also I love how she understands the dieting odyssey that every American fat girl goes through. The struggle is real!

Book #1 of my high school English curriculum retreads. This is a fascinating study of colonial Nigeria and Okonkwo is at once heroic and flawed, tragic yet sympathetic.

Man's Search for Meaning | Viktor E Frankl

"We must never forget that we may also find meaning in life even when confronted a hopeless situation, when facing a fate that cannot be changed. For what then matters is to bear witness to the uniquely human potential at its best, which is to transform a personal tragedy to triumph, to turn one's predicament into a human achievement. When we are no longer able to change a situation [...] we are challenged to change ourselves"

Kenneth Branagh gives a fine, if somewhat soporific performance of Conrad‘s examination of Western Civ. Also, I‘m not sure whether Kurtz is supposed to be a hero or Future Hitler. The ending was very confusing.
