Captive Prince
Captive Prince: Book One of the Captive Prince Trilogy | C. S. Pacat
Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos, but when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.Beautiful, manipulative and deadly, his new master Prince Laurent epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country. For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else . . .

Recommendation from my son. I am definitely a C.S. Pacat fan. My son said the series becomes more and more well written as it progresses {author skill improvement} but I had no complaints. Engaging characters and political intrigue. It is clearly the beginning of a trilogy but could be read as a stand alone ending with a transition. My edition contains a short called The Training of Erasmus which is poignant due to cosmic irony.

Yesterday, I woke up and thought - got to stop letting friends disappoint me and just go to the things I want to go to - so I went to Oz Comic Con solo because I wanted my books signed by C. S. Pacat - it took me ages to find her table because it was hella crowded and I‘m bad at reading maps - but I did it!

«Come ti chiami, tesorino?» chiese Laurent, non senza una certa crudeltà nella voce.
Damen non era solito rispondere alle domande poste con quel tono fintamente mieloso. Sollevò gli occhi sul giovane principe. Fu un errore. Si scambiarono uno sguardo freddo. [...] Laurent ripeté lentamente la domanda in akielonese.
La risposta gli uscì dalle labbra d‘impulso. «Parlo la vostra lingua meglio di quanto voi parliate la mia, tesorino.»

Wow. I was honestly scared I wouldn‘t like this. A lot of the Amazon reviews made me fear it was just a cringe fest. But I was surprised. And shocked. And disgusted. And laughing. And captivated. This is DEFINITELY for mature audiences; there are topics and mentions that left me about to toss the book in a River. But the imagery is amazing and the story is beguiling, can‘t wait to read the next two books! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a way to start out the year!

This series gave me life! I haven't loved a couple like this since Simon and Baz (which were completely different from Damen & Laurent). But when I tell you I felt it 👏👏! Everything, I just FELT everything!

I don't want to move on yet, it was just sooo good!

I solid 3.5 stars from me. It was pretty good. Very political heavy. But go into it knowing that it‘s very rape heavy and very abuse heavy. But it is a good book. Right now Damon is my favorite. Laurent is a little shit. But he‘s growing on me.

This book requires trigger warnings. It is not a fluffy MLM book, it is dark and f*cked up a lot of the times.
I am fascinated by the world in the book, as well as the dynamic forming between the princes.
Damen is strong and honorable but a bit slow on the political aspects. Laurent is a scheming sadist that I want to learn more of.
I enjoyed this, but dis feel it could have stood to be longer to develop characters more.

0/5⭐

CW: rape

The poor writing & weak worldbuilding are bad enough. But the constant, indulgent, painstakingly detailed fetishization of rape & slavery is sickening.

The narrative doesn't even give rape the weight it should. Damen obviously doesn't want to be raped, but then his pride equates public rape to kissing the top of his master's (excuse me, future lover's) boots once & he seriously wonders which is worse.

What. The. Fuck.

BookmarkTavern Yikes! That‘s a definite nope for me! Thanks for the review. 5y

If you‘re up for some slow burn m/m fantasy that‘s mostly character-driven, this might be up your alley. But also trigger warning for rape, abuse and slavery. I loved the chemistry between the main characters though, so I will continue on!

I picked this up for #Booked2019 #politicalintrigue and that completes my autumn season. Thanks to the hosts for this — looking forward to #Booked2020!

Also my pick for #LitsyAtoZ letter C.

Just want to give a shout-out to the Libby app and my library for letting me check out books 10 minutes before my bedtime and without my parents seeing ☺️

Ok, so I'm 35 (I can read what I want), but we make weekly trips to the library together. ?And trying to explain to them the premise behind these... ? "Yeah, so think Game of Thrones, but with, like, pleasure slaves..." ?‍♀️

Reading slump ✅ Exercise slump ✅ So I decided to re-read this series which I love & finally unpack my bike from storage to get back outside and off the stationary bike. The wind almost killed me yesterday, but so happy to be biking again. Hoping to finish out these last 2 weeks of #bookfitnesschallenge on a high note! #bfc @wanderinglynn

jessinikkip Congrats! I really think something like a stationary bike or treadmill would help me, but we don't have the money or anywhere for one yet. Not with 4 people's stuff still needing to be sorted after the move. 6y

I've been trying to read more LGBTQ+ (because I realized it's an area I'm lacking in and can't recommend to library users) and have heard this trilogy is hugely popular. I picked it up and I was hooked. I get why everybody loves it. #LGBTQ #fantasy #historical #slightromance

I‘m rereading this historical m/m fantasy romance. This trilogy, especially the first book, is crammed full of trigger warnings and may be problematic for some readers. But I‘m so infatuated with Prince Laurent 🖤. My weakness is bad boys.

YMMV, for what it is, it's good. This trilogy plus epilogue is fun, mindless, and restful. It requires no brain power, and that's what I needed after 9 days with my parents. It's an alternate history circa 200CE, where only Europe exists and everyone is gay. Most of the narrative is warring and intrigue, with some nice M/M sex interspersed and a lot of sexual tension. Very fanfictional. TW for threats of and offscreen rape and pedophilia.

EloisaJames What‘s The Summer Palace? I read the other three and couldn‘t put them down. I met her—super smart and eccentric, as you might expect. (Eccentric in the best meaning of the word) 6y
tournevis @EloisaJames It's the smutty epilogue. They meet at the summer palace a month or so after the denouement and bang 6y

The cold sass of Laurent and the just flat out Warrior Damen made this fun to read

I liked this, the writing was strong, the characterization was great. I admit I expected a bit more sexy stuff, hehe, but I still enjoyed the story. Some parts felt a little rushed. I feel like this story could easily be even longer, more on the scale of a good old fantasy epic with all the descriptions of travel and courtly life.

StellaDz I love this series!! Stick with it because the sexy stuff 😉 comes! It is a very slow build up to. 8y

How awesome is it that an original slash fic can end up a Penguin-published trilogy in our day and age? C. S. Pacat has a great ear for language and her first novel is so exquisitely plotted, I tore through it in a single sitting. It reminds me a great deal of the YA Winners trilogy (fantasy world of warring nations, main cast of royalty/courtiers, legal slavery as source of conflict/sexual tension) but M/M and VERY adult. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #romantsy

I'm now the proud owner of the Captive Prince trilogy! I checked these out on Overdrive originally, but once I finished the series I knew I had to add it to my library! 😍

CaitlinSiem YAY!!!! CP and PG have bonus scenes in them in the paperback versions! 8y

I knew that Green for but a Season just came out, but I haven't seen it on iBooks (and I thought she said it was going to be there?). The Training of Erasmus is a short story at the end of the Captive Prince paperback (I have the US copy so I'm unsure if it's included in the UK copy as well or not).

This was my first time reading it and I enjoyed the sneak peak into Erasmus's life before we meet him in CP. It's a sweet story with its own heartbreaking moments. I just wanna give Erasmus a hug, poor thing.
