Not my favourite book but it was one I started maybe 15 years ago and it‘s always bugged me that I hadn‘t finished it. I finally took another stab at it for the #readharder2018 challenge (yes, last year‘s 🤷‍♀️) for a classic of genre fiction. #24in48 helped me get it done!

Happy new year, Litsy! While I didn't quite finish all the #ReadHarder2018 tasks (and had to use a couple of books for two tasks as I got down to the wire), I did much better than 2017. I'm taking a break from the challenge this year, but participating in 2018 did just what I hoped it would: it helped me get my reading groove back. I broke 30 books for the first time in YEARS - maybe I'll break 40 or 50 in 2019? 🤔

Here are the challenges I didn't finish this year: @Chelleo's #LitsybytheNumbers, @BookRiot's #ReadHarder2018, @JessBerk13's #LRC2018 & #Goodreads2018readingchallenge. On a more positive note, I may have a long way to go to finish but I've read 11 books for @DuckofDoom's #SFFTBRChallenge so at least I'm making progress! Also, I did finish #LitsyAtoZ2018 so I'm happy I can say I accomplished at least one reading goal 😊 #2018WrapUp #SeasonsReadings

LibrarianRyan Woo hoo . We are in the same boat. But you are a good way on SSFTBR. I‘m at 12. Starting 13. 6y

Finished this last night to complete my #readharder2018 prompts JUST in time! 😉

This was ultimately amazing! The first half of the book is a little bit hard to follow because there is a LOT of hard science in here, but the last half of the book made up for it for me! This is a book essentially dealing with the question of whether or not humanity should be saved. And it is terrifying but somehow hopeful at the same time.

With just over seven hours left in the year, I wrapped up one last #ReadHarder2018 challenge: an Oprah's Book Club pick. Spending my day reading this with a cat on my lap was the perfect way to send off 2018 -- now on to the parties!

Just not for me, despite some lovely passages (see above).

Aside from offhanded sexism in the narration, there's a 'noble savage' aspect that hasn't aged well, to put it generously ("He was too simple to wonder when he had attained humility"; "'Also I have no understanding of [sin]'"). Some parts are laughably heavy-handed (see spoilery comment).

Still, his relationships with nature and with the young boy Manolin are well drawn. #readharder2018

zembla The Christ-figure allegory was drilled into my head in high school, but I had forgotten how clunky it gets in the text itself. I mean honestly: "'Ay,' he said aloud. There is no translation for this word and perhaps it is just a noise such as a man might make, involuntarily, feeling the nail go through his hands and into the wood." OKAY ERNEST. (edited) 6y

24: An assigned book you hated (or never finished).

Yeah, so far I'm digging this book about as little as I did in 10th grade, though admittedly for different reasons. Worth a shot, anyway. #readharder

I'm going to finish these four books for the #readharder2018 and #readingwomen2018 challenges. I only decided in October to take on these challenges, so I'm pleased at my progress!

Woman on the Edge of Time fulfills 3 tasks:
#readharder
3: A classic of genre fiction.
17: A sci fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author.

#readingwomenchallenge
23: The book that has been on my TBR the longest. (Shelved as 'Want to Read' on GR in 2008!)

I think it‘s time to admit to myself that I‘m not going to complete all my reading challenges this year.😢 I‘m 2 books short and don‘t think I‘ll have the time to get through. I completed and surpassed my #mounttbr goal and Goodreads challenge. One shy for #readharder2018 and one for #LitsyAtoZ. I think next year I‘ll take a year off aside from Goodreads. Part of what got me behind was wanting to read outside of my challenge lists. #lennox

BarbaraTheBibliophage I loved this book. And I hear you about challenges. This year I did too many. I just kept piling them on! In 2019 I‘m down to three, plus MountTBR. (Gah! Maybe it‘s still too many!) 6y
jen_hayes7 @BarbaraTheBibliophage Hahaha!! That is still so many challenges!! Though, now that you mention it, MountTBR is pretty easy to tack on if you‘re planning on reading from your existing library anyway. (And this is how it all starts!! 🤣) Good luck with your challenges and Happy 2019!! 🥳 6y
