The Obelisk Gate
The Obelisk Gate: The Broken Stone | N. K. Jemisin
THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS... FOR THE LAST TIME. The season of endings grows darker as civilization fades into the long cold night. Alabaster Tenring -- madman, world-crusher, savior -- has returned with a mission: to train his successor, and thus seal the fate of the Stillness forever. It continues with a lost daughter, found by the enemy. It continues with the obelisks, and an ancient mystery converging on answers at last. You are the wall which stands against the flow of tradition, the spark of hope long buried under the thickening ashfall. And you will not be broken.

As great as the first book. I‘m in awe of the author‘s imagination. Story follows the parallel lives of a powerful mother and daughter in the broken Earth.

As I finish the second in the trilogy, a little more is revealed in the overall nature of this series. An interesting eco fantasy, this novel has so many layers that I‘ve probably not even grasped them all. Worlds, nations, neighbours, family; for all of these concepts, I feel like there is going to be the difficult choice between good and evil.

Luckily my next audible credit is here so I can dive right in to see the ending!

My book for todays letter is the middle novel of the Broken Earth trilogy by Jemisin. One of the best eco fantasy series I‘ve ever read, it‘s strange, it‘s compelling, it‘s depressing & it‘s hopeful. Give it a read if you haven‘t already!

tokorowilliamwallace I'm considering the author eventually, but there's some intimidation with understanding/grasping it, though I try to read above my comprehension level with nonfiction, economics, theory, and philosophy. Intimidating and complex fantasy does sound like something I want to do. 2y

I have so many questions, and so few answers. Whoa.

And there we go: second line for this month's #BookSpinBingo! Because when I over-achieve I REALLY overachieve, I'm aiming for six lines in all: three verticals, two horizontals, and a diagonal. It's a bit ambitious still but pretty sure I can do it.

Nutmegnc Such good reads!! 2y

In a way, I'm annoyed I took so long to read this... especially with my mum and my wife both giving dark hints about it. It's no surprise that I think it's great -- it's N.K. Jemisin! But it IS kinda dark, and I haven't always been in a great headspace for that. So I don't really regret leaving this for when I can enjoy it!

Just discovered who the narrator is. Interesting...

Book #14 of the year: “The Obelisk Gate” by N.K. Jemisin

This is the second in a trilogy (and I‘m actually reading it in order for once). The first one was intriguing but this one…it‘s been a long time since I‘ve stayed up until nearly 2 to finish a book. I tried to stop a few times but couldn‘t. If you‘re looking for incredible sci-fi/fantasy, here you go!

SamAnne Have read the first one and can‘t wait to get to this one. 3y

SamAnne Oy. I‘m rereading Fifth Season right now so I can start this one with my memory refreshed. 3y
jessicamichelle @SamAnne awesome! I dove in right after I finished The Fifth Season. I wanted to keep the momentum. Started yesterday morning and I‘m already halfway through. It‘s a bit slower than the first, but I‘m loving all the character development and growth that‘s going on. 3y

I can‘t believe it took me so long to pick this one up. I love the depth of the world building and the way the magic system is still fleshing out over the course of the trilogy. Essun is a complicated character and I love watching her journey as she tries to get by the best that she can and learns from her failures.

My goal is to obviously finish Obelisk Gate and then start on House in the Cerulean Sea. With the month changing over again my new challenge reads will come into play so if I manage to finish both of those I'll start on April reads.

This book took me weeks and when I finally committed to it I had nearly forgotten everything from the first book. It‘s not the series though, it‘s me. The writing style is immediately recognizable and special. The fantasy world and the whole season & orogenes idea is sooo amazing. I have to remember to hurry up with part 3 before I forget stuff again.

This book is incredible. It's world building is unlike anything I've ever read, and I love the juxtaposition of magic within a sort of environmental dystopia. I loved all the new details of the world fleshed out and Essun's continued growth. I can't wait to see how the final book manages to wrap everything up.

The Obelisk Gate enthralls readers with its dark and emotional tones. N. K. Jemisin peels back the layers of history with each. As the pieces fall into place, you‘ll find the broken world may have a chance at survival. But it will take those subjected to centuries of discrimination to rise up and fight. Some of the revelations will be jaw dropping. #fantasy

5feet.of.fury Great review! I was glad to spend the majority of the time with Essun in Castrima. In someways she was further in her grief than the first book, but “her people” gave her something to fight for. I‘m so excited to see what plays out in the 3rd book. 3y

This one picks up traction much faster than the first. Neither book so far has stood well on their own with both endings leaving the reader in the thick of it. This gets more into magical and metaphysical than the previous and I cannot wait to see what is next. World building is among the greatest I‘ve encountered.

SamAnne I hope to start this in a week or two. I feel like I need to go back and at least read parts of the first book before starting this one. 3y

The Fifth Season was a tour de force but the sequel suffers from serious second book syndrome. The complex POVs and timelines become more conventional and the narrative loses out. There is a LOT of exposition that interferes with the pacing and somehow the characters have lost their allure. I was utterly engrossed by book 1, I struggled a little with this one. It is my #bookspin though, so I can cross it off the bingo card @TheAromaofBooks

Absolutely amazing! The depth of characters, the continued world building and the magical elements was all perfectly balanced. And there is something so refreshing following a story were the main character with the power to save everyone is a middle aged woman of color. I wish more books like this were adapted for the screen.

TheAromaofBooks @Lizpixie @TheSpineView - It's just one of those series where every time something can go wrong it does!!! I'm excited to see how it all wraps up, though. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Soubhiville - January is one of my “down“ months between my two seasonal jobs, so I try to get through some of my heftier reads haha 3y
AlaMich Second-person narration is not my favorite. I don‘t really see the point. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @AlaMitch - about partway through this book (the 2nd in the trilogy) you find out who is narrating the 2nd person parts/actually the whole story... but it still makes no sense to me. How is this character able to tell 'you' how you feel/what you are thinking/explain motivations/etc. And it's also being told in present-tense, which makes even less sense! Also hate it because sentences like 'she was a little shorter than you' tell me literally ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) nothing about this person's height because the 'you' in this story is not the same height/weight/background as me so it's just annoying & not remotely informative! 3y

TheAromaofBooks @Texreader - I was mixing in the “assigned“ reading with everything else throughout the month last year, but realized that it was low-key stressing me out if I wasn't getting them done “in time“ despite the fact that literally no one cares but me! 😂 So this year I'm trying to read those first - I think it will also help me assess if I'm trying to participate in too many challenges or not!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - That was the one the library had, so the fates decided for me!! 😂 And I do feel silly calling them assignments, but haven't come up with a better term. I always did enjoy school, though, so maybe this is just me subconsciously trying to fill the gap!! 😅 3y
Texreader @TheAromaofBooks That exactly describes my feelings too! So yea, good plan!! 3y

Book 105, audio

Really enjoyed the character building here after the world building of the first book.

Solid pick, and I will definitely be reading it again, but my mind kept slipping. I had to rewind and relisten to some parts multiple times to get the whole picture. Though, to be frank, that could very well have been stress from the election more than the writing. I've struggled to accomplish much of anything lately.

cozypunk I thought there was a good amount of world-building, too. But you're right about characters - the size of the cast expands as well as their relationships. 3y
