This should have been called "Steve Bannon : A Love Story" as it is crystal clear that Wolff is a Bannon fan boy. Felt like he wanted to write a book about Bannon but didn't get permission so this is what he did instead. Also, where the heck was his editor? Bad grammar, syntax and sentance structure. Was he paid by the comma?

blurb

Pretty sure Michael Wolff is a not so closeted Bannon fan boy. Over halfway through and he mentions Bannon on just about every page.

Wow, this was a heck of a ride but with a few bumps. Interesting characters, sufficiently evil "Bad Guy" and great world building. My quibbles: 1. not told in first person but we only got the thoughts of one character which was annoying and this book could have benefited from other perspectives. 2. Trying to cram in too many fantastical elements. Fae, steampunk, shadowy societies, dragons etc. Even So, I liked it and will read book 2.

This is a roller coaster of a book so far. A lot of twists... but ones I should have seen coming. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Go Big or Go Home | Will Hobbs

Interesting premise but weirdly executed. Characters were half realized at best. The setting in the Black Hills/Badlands was the best part-already dreaming of a road trip.

Really dig this book, bringing back good memories of my college anthropology classes.

Rebel of the Sands | Alwyn Hamilton
Mehso-so

Overall good but it suffered from the same annoying "teenagers must save the world" trope that many novels have. No room for adults in a rebellion? Also, I feel like the author read the Percy Jackson books and said, how can I steal this but pretend it's different? Hoping for a growth in style and more original ideas in book 2.

I am really digging this! Lots of great info presented in an accessible and engaging way.

Rebel of the Sands | Alwyn Hamilton

The syntax of the wild West being used in conjunction with the culture of the Middle East is a bit off-putting but so far I really enjoy the storyline.

Some interesting stories but felt disjointed and it definitely seemed like he has a lot of contempt for the Vietnamese people. His descriptions of them are less than complimentary and that every time he mentions how rich he is is at odds with his practice and study of Buddhism.

So far not enjoying this as much as I thought I would. Hoping for improvement!

Oh man, this is so good thus far. Flavia is incredible and I just love her relationship with Dogger.

Abominable. David Lagercrantz should be ashamed of the dumpster fire of a book.

Peterfox123 Oh dear. About to start this and was hoping it wouldn't be a huge let down. ☹️ 6y
erincb82 For me, this one was just too ridiculous/ disorganized/contrived. The characters lost a lot of their complexity from earlier books and are really just caricatures of the characters we know from the first 3. 6y

What is this? 56 pages in and it is not good. Hoping for improvement.

Y is for Yesterday | Sue Grafton
Mehso-so

Pretty disappointing. Could have done without the flashbacks. I skipped most of them and saved myself a lot of time. Also, you can tell Sue is tired of writing these-virtually no effort to bring in the much loved peripheral characters and Kinsey is not her usual snarky smart self. In this she is a judgemental witch. Hoping Z is better.

A hot mess of stupid plot lines with nothing really interesting happening in 360 pages. I am done with this series.

A fascinating look at a complex issue. Also, points to the author for mentioning Dillon Reservoir that my great grandfather did the survey work for and the Denver Water Board where my grandpa worked for over 30 years.

I like this but did anyone else notice sort of but not really subtle misogyny? Not sure if it is intentional, to show Ove's old fashioned ideas or if the author's own biases are coming through.
