The Deep | Rivers Solomon, Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, Jonathan Snipes

Pickpick

This is surely the most unique work of science fiction I‘ve read. It‘s a short book that strays from the normal path and dives to the ocean floor and into the lives of mermaids and whales, their close companions.
The most important trait The Deep possesses is its ability to take something as horrible and ugly as slavery and use science fiction to create a riveting fantasy from a huge loss; an ocean teeming with life from its history.

Cilka's Journey | Heather Morris
post image
Pickpick

Cilka leaves Auschwitz and is immediately transported to a Serbian prison to serve a 15-year sentence for sleeping with the enemy after being raped by the commanding officers of the Auschwitz camp. From there, she is forced to see countless more deaths and face obstacles that seem impossible for one person to bear. She survives, hopes, and perseveres. And the readers bear witness to a small light in one of the darkest times in human history.

Wilder Girls | Rory Power

Wilder Girls (releases tomorrow!) is young adult, girl power INSANITY. Author Rory Power takes any preconceived ideas of femininity, chucks all of that out the window, and leaves her readers with violence, horror, and kickass girls in the throes of the Tox — a deadly plague that turns its victims into deformed, monster-like creatures; plants, animals, and humans alike.

The Paper Wasp | LAUREN. ACAMPORA

The Paper Wasp is weird, creepy, and will blow your mind. This author is an extremely creative writer, and as a result, I flew through this book and was fascinated with it up until the end. This was so so good, I‘m still glad I read it, but I can‘t give it more than 3 stars because I grew a bond with this book, and it in turn punched me in the face and ran away, leaving me nothing but confusion and shame 😉.

TrishB Great review 👍🏻 5y
marleed Oh I feel you. Sometimes I really like a book but there‘s one thing The happens - the ending, or the author‘s take on a topic that may not even be key to the story that leaves a star dangling. And upon reflection there‘s that star on the floor losing its luster. 5y
fictionaltiff @TrishB thank you! 😊 5y
fictionaltiff @marleed if, as an author, you‘re going to make me spend my time reading your extremely well-done book, don‘t give me a bad ending! Haha I‘m still mad 5y

The Tubman Command: A Novel | Elizabeth Cobbs
post image
Pickpick

Cobbs reaches past the Underground Railroad and brings you a Harriet Tubman story less told. This is a fictional account of the ships Tubman helped lead up the Combahee River to rescue 750 slaves; the largest plantation raid of the Civil War.
The beginning was a slow burn, but was worth it in the end to be able to experience such an enthralling bit of American history... it still could‘ve been about 100 pages shorter. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars.

This book is going down as one of my favorites of the year. It just spoke directly to my music-loving soul and was perfect with drawing out emotions, entertaining the reader, and some great parts that were just laugh-out-loud funny.

Cape May: A Novel | Chip Cheek
post image
Mehso-so

I was swept up in this beach read set in the 1950‘s, of a young married couple on their honeymoon in Cape May. This book takes the reader on a journey from dumb, young innocence to sultry, sexy lust. Chip Creek has created this story (fantastic writing and gorgeous beach scenes) that shows how quickly one action can lead to a dizzy, winding path that will forever change the participants. I loved the book, but it was too steamy for my taste.

The Baby Binder is a chronicled journey of the years of infertility and everything Callie Micks went through to figure out how her body could have a baby.
When everyone seemed to give up, Micks persisted. She didn‘t take no for an answer and kept pursuing the questions her body‘s symptoms were raising. If one doctor didn‘t have the answer, she moved on. She learned everything a non-medical expert could about her body. And her persistence paid off.

We Should All Be Feminists | Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
post image
Pickpick

I‘m adding this book immediately to everyone‘s mandatory reading list. It‘s a 50-page essay, so I don‘t think I‘m being unreasonable.
Adichie isn‘t trying to fit everyone into a specific feminist stereotype. She‘s not saying men and women are the same and should be treated as such. Yes, we can be treated differently as women, but in no way should a woman be treated as LESS. A man is not greater than a woman just because he is a man.

The Curiosities is a perfectly painted picture of real life, the ups and downs, the love and heartbreak. The book itself is a piece of art; it captures the life of Nell and the Mansion Hill Artists‘ Colony and evokes various emotions as the reader follows the perspective of each person. Everyone has their own struggles and growth they go through as they share a mansion and get to know one another.
A five-star read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Seafire | Natalie C. Parker
post image

This is the bit that made me fall in love with Seafire: “Remember, when they call you girl, they‘re trying to tell you something. They‘re trying to tell you that they‘re more than you, that the body you‘re in makes you less. But you know, and I know, that you‘re exactly what you need to be.”
Seafire is an incredibly fun adventure, full of feminist energy and strength. It‘s the first part in a futuristic, steampunk, pirate young adult book. 4⭐️/5.

398.2 I really enjoyed this one too. I need to read the next one! 6y

Overall, the encouraging message of Girl, Wash Your Face was great. But I felt like I could‘ve read an encouraging blog page and called it a day. Hollis covers a wide array of topics without sinking deep into any of the issues. I loved her transparency, but needed more.
I did love the book club discussion this generated, but am I excited about this book, would I read it again, or recommend it for other bookworms to read? Nah. Pass. 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️.

This was an amazing, heartbreaking book that makes me truly appreciate the power of fiction; how it not only transports the reader from reality, but also provides a close-up encounter of a perspective we‘d otherwise be ignorant of. This is definitely on my favorites list now. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

One of my current reads that I received as an ARC. It‘s going to be a fun but emotional journey to read this one, as it‘s about a woman in her 30‘s struggling to get pregnant. And from this point, it looks like her life will crash before she picks herself up.

Reecaspieces I loved this book! Enjoy! 6y

A book for all book lovers to read. The entire book is composed of letters from/to Juliet to/from her dear friends, coworkers, lovers, and strangers. The strangers come together through their love for literature, and this book perfectly captures how books can bring us together in the hardest of times and create connections we would never have previously imagined. All the stars out of five.

Where the Crawdads Sing is overall an outstanding, one-of-a-kind piece of literature. The author‘s words take on their own personality and lead the reader into the depths of the marsh and sea to observe the flow of its natural life.
This was THE book of 2018 and years to come because Owens sets up Kya‘s shack right in the heart of the reader and pulls those heartstrings like she‘s been there the entire time.

West with the Night | Beryl Markham
post image
Pickpick

Beryl Markham is someone who has such an insanely interesting life that she HAD to write a book about it, and I‘m so glad she did. If you‘re searching for a book on someone who broke all stereotypes of women in the 1930s, look no further. And West with the Night is a book recommended by Hemingway himself — yep, that was enough for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
She was the first person to fly the Atlantic from east to west, and this is her autobiography.

The Heart‘s Invisible Furies is unlike any other book I‘ve read. It is an extremely valuable book, in that it gives a full historical perspective of homosexuality. It takes the reader by the hand and gives a full walk-through... and personally for me, a few slaps on the face and explanations that completely changed my views on how I treat people.

I'll be keeping an eye out for more books from this author, as she has the ability to conjure up magical creatures and landscapes that transported me to everywhere I wanted to go: from the forest and mountains to the beaches and sea and all of the magical places I could never see.
Overall, four out of five stars -- I never gasped, laughed, or cried outwardly, but was still provided plenty of entertainment, girl power, and life takeaways.

Nute Welcome to Litsy! It‘s a warm and friendly community. I know that you will enjoy yourself here. I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 5y
