Frankly in Love
Frankly in Love | David Yoon
Frank Li is a high school senior living in Southern California. Frank's parents emigrated from Korea, and have pretty much one big rule for Frank - he must only date Korean girls. But he's got strong feelings for a girl in his class, Brit - and she's not Korean. His friend Joy Song is in the same boat and knows her parents will never accept her black boyfriend, so they make a pact: they'll pretend to date each other in order to gain their freedom. Frank thinks fake-dating is the perfect plan, but it leaves him wondering if he ever really understood love - or himself - at all. David Yoon's debut novel is a quirky, authentic, heartbreaking romantic comedy and a refreshingly different take on race, immigrant communities, friendship and family.

This book made me smile, laugh, cry & feel teenage angst all over again. Frank Li has to navigate his parent‘s approval as he figures out who he is during his last year of H.S. He begins to date while trying to sort out his relations with his parents, sister & friends. This ranks right up with Eleanor & Park in terms of realistic YA novels about love. Great read for a first time novelist. I look forward to reading more of David Yoon!

Honestly...I picked up this book so that I could review it and get points in my BookishFirst account! 😶 But I started it tonight and can't put it down! It's so good!

Also, what is going on with litsy? I keep seeing these surveys and talk about reviving litsy...is litsy in trouble, guys? I love this community so much and now I'm worried it's in trouble! Could I get some reassurance? 😓 Also I'm sorry, I know I post a lot of pics of my kitties!

Sace I think it's all OK. It sounds to me like the drama is more on FB? I'm not any kind of spokesperson or heavy user but I hadn't noticed a thing before today. Carry on and mute hashtags 🤣 1w
Sace Oh! What's BookishFirst? 1w
LibrarianRyan No no nothing to worry about. Litsy is not currently going anywhere. Some people who have been here for years have noticed an absence of other old timers and or a feeling. I do keep hearing this FB thing but I quit that years ago. We are good and fine. Just airing some love and some pet peeves. And frustration over iOS scrolling. 😁 1w
See All 22 Comments
Branwen @Sace Oh, okay, that's good to know! I didn't realize there was an issue either, so when I got on today and saw all the discourse about fixing litsy I got super anxious! 🤣😂 1w
LibrarianRyan @Sace bookish first.com. You can read excerpts of up coming books for a chance to win that book. At the same time you earn points and when you hit 2000 points you can “claim” a book and get it for free. Some are galleys some are hardcover novels won 4 and claimed 1. It resets every Friday I believe. 1w
Branwen @Sace OMG! Bookish First is an AMAZING website where you sign up for free and you can review books to earn points. If you earn enough points you can use them to get physical ARC's! Plus they have weekly giveaways where you can win the ARC's! And you don't need to write like a billion reviews to earn points. It's very reasonable. I've been using the site for less than a month and I've already earned two books and won one in a giveway! 1w
Sace @LibrarianRyan that's sounds like a lot of effort. So I won't be doing that. Lol. I prefer calling them "pioneer" to old timer. ? 1w
vivastory I think Litsy was going through a brief midlife crisis 😂 1w
Branwen @LibrarianRyan Oh, okay! WHEW! Thanks so much for clearing that up, friend! 😀 I don't know what I would do without litsy! 💕📚 It's such a great community! And I've discovered so many great books through here! 1w
Sace @Branwen maybe I'll at least look at it this weekend 1w
LibrarianRyan @Sace it can be. For me it depends on the month and how busy I am. If I have nothing better. Heck yeah. BTW I like OG (original gangster) myself. 😁 1w
Branwen @vivastory Ahahaha! It seems that way! 🤣😂 1w
Branwen @Sace It's pretty fun! I hope you like it! 😀 1w
Sace @LibrarianRyan yup. You win OG is awesome. 1w
RainyDayReading I was wondering this same thing! I haven‘t been on much the last few days because the new iOS update has made being on apps nearly unbearable. So when I finally summoned the courage to come on today I thought I had completely missed something haha. 1w
4thhouseontheleft @vivastory Or maybe teenage rebellion years? 🤣🤣 And @Branwen I love the 🐈 photos! 1w
ljuliel No worries. I just noticed that many original big posters have left and the activity in here has decreased considerably. I used to have a hard time keeping up with posts, now, they just trickle in a few at a time. I just thought maybe a questionnaire to see other‘s opinions and if we could get participation back up. Apparently I ruffled a few feathers , which was not my intent. (edited) 1w
Ericalambbrown @RainyDayReading My app has been terrible since that update! I think lots of iPhone users are on here less because of it. 1w
Branwen @Ericalambbrown @RainyDayReading I've been hearing this a lot as well! I hope the issue gets cleared up soon! 1w
Branwen @4thhouseontheleft Thank you so much! 😻💕 1w
Branwen @ljuliel Oh okay! That makes sense! Thanks for clearing that up! I hope the surveys help! 💕 1w

I‘m a little sad my dust jacket was beaten up when I received it, but that definitely didn‘t deter from the story! This beautifully weaves a romance into a story about growing up American AND ___; in this case American & Korean. I loved seeing how the familial dynamics played a HUGE role in our main character‘s decisions, be them good or bad. Another part towards the end took me by surprise & made me cry, as my own personal life was close to it.

I really loved this book! Great first novel by David Yoon! I was laughing and crying and feeling all of the emotions during Frank‘s journey throughout this book. Q is the best best friend anyone could have, Joy and Frank together are hilarious (along with the Apeys and Limbos), and if you‘re also looking for a great narration of this story, try out the audiobook as well!

There‘s a lot to like about this book, I expect it will be a hit with young readers, but while I liked it, I didn‘t love it. To make his parents happy, Frank Li needs to date a nice Korean girl. The only problem is that his girlfriend isn‘t. He comes up with a fake dating scheme to hide that fact & of course nothing can go wrong with that, right? That part of the story was weaker than the story about growing up in an immigrant family. Solid debut.

Wow. So only one gripe, for a group of teens destined to go to Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Columbia, etc they sure use profanity in lieu are adjectives way more than I would think is believeable. However, it's been a long time since I was a teen and I know I'm not in the loop as much anymore. The rest of the book was amazing, I learned a lot about Korean/Korean-America culture. Distributed for YA but would be insightful to adults.

I was on the fence on this one for a while. I thought that maybe I was just too old for YA like this but NOPE. About halfway through I got hooked. It‘s a great story that deals with overwhelming first loves, how to love someone even when they say racist thing, and how to be exactly who you are, especially when you‘re not quite sure who that is.

Adding this to the list of books all teens need to read next to The Hate U Give.

Frank Li is a Korean-American high schooler who is neither American enough or Korean enough. He wants to date a girl who just happens to be white but comes up with a ridiculous fake date scheme with a close Korean friend to fool his parents. This book was so deep and representative of what it means to be caught between cultures. And it was hilarious because of Franks strong and questioning voice. Reading the back interview between David and 👇🏼

Reggie his author wife Nicola Yoon, you see where this book comes from when he tells you how in real life his parents didn‘t attend their wedding because they didn‘t approve of who she was. Because she was black. And how they didn‘t talk to him for 10 years. How he talks about how you can love your parents but just be disappointed in them. Really illuminating. Read this book. I fell in love with the writing, the plot and, most of all, the characters. I couldn‘t put it down. The story was original — definitely belonging to the YA genre, but so beautifully written and mature that anybody would enjoy it. The honest and down to earth subjects of racism, culture, family, love, friendship, gender and coming of age were a pleasure to read.

Adeptly captures the teen voice, particularly how they can both make stupid jokes and then shift to expose vulnerability to a trusted friend. Funny, heartfelt, honest and engaging, with openings to discuss race, class, expectations, gun violence and sexuality from a variety of perspectives, and how different people have different ideas of what happiness and contentment look like. A love story, but not a romance, if the distinction matters to you.
