Daisy Jones & The Six
Daisy Jones & The Six | Taylor Jenkins Reid
A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of a world-famous 1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer--and the secret reasons behind their dramatic break up. Daisy Jones is a beautiful, broken girl growing up in L.A. with rich parents who barely know she exists. . . . But when she sings in a crowded, smoky club, you can hear a pin drop. All she wants is to write her own songs, but the record studio has its own ideas. It's the early 1970s and free love and drugs are everywhere, and Daisy wants to experience it all. Billy Dunne and his brother have a band called The Six that won't be playing weddings for long. They are ambitious, hard-rocking, hard-partying. When they land a record deal, Billy's girlfriend follows them to the west coast and life begins. But she finds out she's pregnant on the eve of their first tour, and the pressure of fatherhood and incipient fame make Billy go a little crazy on the road. Daisy and Billy's paths cross when a manager realizes that the key to skyrocketing success is to put them together. But oil and water don't even begin to describe how they mix. . . . And what happens next will become the stuff of legend. Written in the style of an "as-told-to" rock autobiography, Daisy Jones & The Six is an unforgettable ride.

I liked this book - not as much as Evelyn Hugo, but the author is a talented write. The format of this book is interviews - no "narrative". The story has to be pieced together from the interviews of each character (and they are all happening simultaneously). It's clever.

I don‘t usually listen to audio books I usually prefer the actual book in my hand, but this was a good one to listen to. The different voices for each character made it seem like listening to a movie. Some of the characters were a little one dimensional, but if you put that aside it‘s a fun book with a great ending.

Two critical errors delayed my reading of this book: (1) I got it confused with the Bridget Jones‘s Diary series which after the first book I didn‘t like the first and (2) no one told me this was based on / inspired by Fleetwood Mac. Had I known those things earlier, I absolutely would had read this book way before. The audio book is so fun with the entire cast of voices and surprisingly easy to follow along with as you get to know them. Read it!

Told as the written form of a docudrama, this touches on the personal lives of a 1970s fictional rock band. The amazing audio version amplifies personality traits of characters, especially Daisy & Billy, who are both egotistical yet insecure. Daisy is described this way, “She‘s gorgeous—even as a child. She has these stunning big blue eyes—dark, cobalt blue.“ Based on the bookcovers, you'd never know it, so that is my one small quibble. #audiobook

marleed A couple years back I read TJR describe Daisy as a cross between Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt. I love that Elvis Presley‘s granddaughter portrays Daisy in the adaptation- what a great tribute to music. 5mo

I have mixed feelings about this one. It's a good story which takes place in a fascinating era. The character interactions and motivations are believable. And I love TJR's no-nonsense writing style. Still something didn't click. ⬇️

eeclayton It may be the format. I've seen my fair share of rock documentaries, and what makes them gripping to me is when they tell the story behind the music. But here, with an imaginary band, with imaginary songs, it felt like all the rock and roll clichés poured into one generic '70s group. 5mo
eeclayton While reading, I could picture all the different characters talking to the camera on VH1, but the references to their songs and albums and tours were meaningless, rendering the experience quite weightless for me. It wasn't a bad read, but I enjoyed Evelyn Hugo and One True Loves much-much more. 5mo
Caroline2 Couldn‘t agree more! I liked it but it kinda left me cold. 🤷‍♀️ 5mo

Absolutely worth all the hype. I had to monitor when I picked this up to read because I couldn‘t put it back down. I loved how no one remembered an event the same way. I loved how personalities came through each time a moment was retold differently. All of it was so well done. I‘m excited to see the tv adaptation.

WOW… Another masterpiece by TJR! I have been in a reading rut lately but this book dragged me out of it. I really enjoyed the interview style of writing and the connections it forced me to make with the characters. This book was one that made me to feel exactly what the charceters were feeling and had me conflicted on who I was rooting for in the end. The story felt so real and alive. I was enthralled by the plot and couldn‘t put it down!

Set up like an interview, the book reads as a character‘s name and then their dialogue, no action description, quotes or parenthesis.

This shows the storytelling aspect from each different character in the band or related to the band, giving the reader different angles of the story and not letting them know which character is telling the truth.

During this re-read, I realized that Camilla is as big a part of this story as Eliza is in Hamilton. They‘re the ones who made (a large part of) the story happen. Camila Morrone looks like she‘s just right for the part of Camila Dunne. So excited for the show! 💖

marleed I reread this book immediately upon finishing realizing the fate of the characters, and the book is really told in memoriam for her to her daughter. I‘m curious to see if the show will be told in real time where Camille might be a bit different than what the band remembers her to be when talking to her daughter. 8mo
AileenRR @marleed Ooh, that‘s something I hadn‘t considered 🤔 8mo
marleed @AileenRR my mother died many years ago when I was two so I have no direct memories of her. All the stories I heard had me convinced my mother was canonized a saint and people just weren‘t told! I went out of state to her alma mater for college (one of had to!) and while there met someone who finally told me a less than perfect story of her. I was thrilled and it made her more real than all the stories that came before it! 8mo
See All 6 Comments
marleed So my second pass through this book made me think that if I was the daughter interviewing friends of my mother when she was alive, the stories would be most certainly tilted to my mother‘s favor. So no wonder everyone likes Camille best - she‘s been canonized! 8mo
AileenRR @marleed I love that you shared this point of view! And I‘m glad you got a more complex glimpse into who your mom was 😊 8mo

TJR does it again with this novel about a 1970s rock band‘s meteoric rise to stardom and infamous breakup. The voices in this book are so real I had to double-check that this is indeed a work of fiction. I simply fell in love with this band without hearing a single note of their music. The interview format of this really worked and TJR‘s ability to capture so many voices so well is a testament to her talent. Can‘t wait for the miniseries! 4⭐️

Book #7
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐+
This is one of my very favorite books since I first read it a couple of years ago. I heard that the audiobook was great, too, so now here I am. The performances - not just reading - were amazing, and did what I didn't think was possible, by making the characters even more real than Reid had already succeeded in making them. ❤❤❤ But why aren't they real??? I would give up chocolate for a year, just for a copy of their album, Aurora.

Kris10H My husband was playing on the XBox while I was crocheting and listening to the book. After listening for a while, he says "what band is this?", thinking that it was a work of non-fiction. That, to me, is the sign of a good book. 9mo
