Daisy Jones & The Six
Daisy Jones & The Six | Taylor Jenkins Reid
A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of a world-famous 1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer--and the secret reasons behind their dramatic break up. Daisy Jones is a beautiful, broken girl growing up in L.A. with rich parents who barely know she exists. . . . But when she sings in a crowded, smoky club, you can hear a pin drop. All she wants is to write her own songs, but the record studio has its own ideas. It's the early 1970s and free love and drugs are everywhere, and Daisy wants to experience it all. Billy Dunne and his brother have a band called The Six that won't be playing weddings for long. They are ambitious, hard-rocking, hard-partying. When they land a record deal, Billy's girlfriend follows them to the west coast and life begins. But she finds out she's pregnant on the eve of their first tour, and the pressure of fatherhood and incipient fame make Billy go a little crazy on the road. Daisy and Billy's paths cross when a manager realizes that the key to skyrocketing success is to put them together. But oil and water don't even begin to describe how they mix. . . . And what happens next will become the stuff of legend. Written in the style of an "as-told-to" rock autobiography, Daisy Jones & The Six is an unforgettable ride.

Mehso-so

So in a previous post i explained that i felt this book to, 'Cliché' and 'Cringy.' Well, i still think that it is both those things up until 'Aurora 1977-1978' and more so 'Aurora world tour 1978-1979.'

(CONTINUE IN COMMENTS)

Clutterbucks_Queen I didn't warm to Daisy at all, i found her to be a disruptive force and i found it really annoying that she ended up having to be told by Camila to back off... 2h
Clutterbucks_Queen I felt quite a sadness for Graham and Karen and their situation. But it is what it is and some people, such as Karen, just know what they want with their lives for definite. 2h
Clutterbucks_Queen But my favourite person, even though he was unfaithful in the beginning to Camila, was Billy! He fought for sobriety, he succeeded. He fought for his children and Camila, he succeeded. He is my idea of an amazing person that has got his head screwed on. He showed such strength to be who he was with all the sadness that occured in his life. 2h
Clutterbucks_Queen It involved many aspects i personally find difficult to hear/read/know about, but i really liked the fact it was written through the eyes of Julia, Billy and Camila's eldest daughter! So it's definitely worth a 3 star and a read! ⭐⭐⭐ 2h

I am loving this audio book so far. I'm really glad that I went the audio route with this one. It would be a good read, but the full voice cast really makes this great. I'm a little over halfway done, and I wish that I could buy their albums! I almost have in my mind what they should sound like.

Jerdencon It‘s going to be a tv show on amazon so I‘m guessing you will be able to soon! 1d

I so badly want to love this book after reading all the amazing reviews, but im nearly halfway through and despite the touching moment where Billy meets his daughter for the first time, I'm really not enjoying it like i hoped ☹️
I find it very cliché and stereotypically written regarding band members etc. Kind of cringy for me so far 🤷‍♀️

Reagan-reads Yep. It ended up as a pick for me but nowhere near the rave reviews I see elsewhere. 1d
Clutterbucks_Queen I'm quite gutted to be honest. I really wanted to enjoy it. I'm going to try to finish it but it's dragging for me 😴 1d

#BOTM book of the year voting time! There were so many books that I loved on the list to choose from and still more that I am excited to read but at the end of the day TJR is my favorite author and Daisy Jones did not disappoint at all!

What book did you all vote for? #botmbookoftheyear #bookoftheyear

shellleigh33 I won this book on a goodreads giveaway before it was released and loved it then and still do!! This author has since became one of my favorite authors. I always recommend this book or Evelyn Hugo to anyone that is asking for a new book recommendation!! 2d
TheLibrarian I voted for Daisy Jones too! 2d
Book_ish @shellleigh33 me too! I read her first book Forever Interrupted a few years ago right after it came out and when she would release a new book I was vaguely aware and would read it and I would love each book more and more until I realized I needed all of her books the day they were published! Lol 2d
Book_ish @TheLibrarian I‘m not going to lie there were so many good ones this year that they made it difficult! 2d

The classic rock lover in me truly had a blast with this fictional oral history of a ‘70s rock band‘s rise to glory (and abrupt ending). While certain aspects of this book left me conflicted — the obvious themes of drug use and infidelity were handled too cavalierly, in my opinion — the story‘s movement and the members of the band‘s magnetism all felt real and made for a fun read.

I didn‘t think this was for me (the fictional band put me off - sounded contrived) but loved it! It reads as band members talking to a journalist, so this cuts through the fiction & make-believe & feels like they‘re chatting to you. The intimacy makes it engaging & hooks you in. The characters & rock lifestyle felt real - fun comparing to actual bands; & poignant re addiction & being true to yourself. Daisy: ‘I am not a muse. I am the somebody‘.

3.5/5
I wasn‘t sure if I would like the interview-style format of this book, but I thought it worked to set the scene and help move the story along. I had to remind myself this was a novel because it feels so authentic. However, when I did, I kept looking for something to happen. I don‘t know what that was, but it never came. Some great lines in here, but I was it didn‘t blow me away.

This book is like reading an article in Rolling Stone. It is entertaining, emotionally twisting, full of band gossip, and a rock fan‘s dream. Taylor Jenkins Reid writes so well I honestly didn‘t know if this book was fiction or not. I even looked for Aurora (one of their songs) on YouTube because it felt so real, even though I knew it was fictional. This book should win a Grammy just for the fantastic lyrics contained within.

I was slightly apprehensive going in to Reid's book. It's not because of the hype, but rather I felt that this would be mostly about the title character with the supporting cast playing backup for her life story. First, let me say that the hype is entirely justified. Second, I have to point out that while this book is about Daisy & Billy, equally important & interesting are their relationships with other band members, family & friends. 👇

vivastory Yes, this book is about self-determination, but it's also about the friends and family who support us when we need it the most. It's about learning to forgive yourself & not letting past mistakes determine your entire life. I LOVED this book. This is written as an oral history, which is one of the ways that non-fiction stories are told. Jenkins Reid brilliantly uses this format to frame her narrative in a time where there was no social media to record events. Each character's name precedes their part—everyone is chiming in to tell their account of the events and sometimes their stories contradict.

This story was utterly mesmerizing and totally lived up to all the hype!

I'm not crying, you're crying.

This was incredible, especially with the full cast audio. I wasn't really interested when I heard about it but after Evelyn Hugo I decided TJR was worth the hype and this seemed a great use of a Libro credit. So many nuanced, difficult, heartbreaking characters. It did not go where you'd assume and I did not side with who I expected to. Graham and Karen Karen were my faves, and everyone felt so real. 💯

I love Netflix documentaries, so I really liked the set-up of Daisy Jones and the Six with each character telling their version of the story of the rise and fall of the biggest (fictional) band of the Seventies. Full of rock and roll, simmering resentments, and slightly different versions of the story, it was a great read.

I am listening to the audiobook while following along in the physical book (the first time I have ever done this!)

I‘m noticing a few differences. For example, the audio version says April 22, not 24th.

I‘m wondering if these types of slight changes (there have also been some missed and added words), are typical for an audiobook? 🧐

Lindy Good question. 🧐 2mo
Martyn_J_Pass I‘ve had a couple of my books turned into audio and this is a thing lol. I‘ve proof listened and thought ‘I didn‘t write that!‘ Lol 2mo

See All 12 Comments
Martyn_J_Pass @4thhouseontheleft Totally!! If you listen to my ‘Wolf and the Bear‘ on Audible the narrator repeats a line twice in two places lol. I guess they‘re only human and technology plays a big part in making mistakes easier to make 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @Martyn_J_Pass stacked your book! I guess I just always thought that someone would be proof reading(listening?) to them. It‘s still a great audiobook though. 2mo
DrexEdit Having just finished production on one of my first audiobooks (as the publisher, not the narrator) I have to say this is probably very typical. I listened closely to all the audio files and found several places where words were mispronounced or misread. If it didn't affect the meaning, I let it go. If it did change the meaning, like the above mistake would, I asked the narrator to re-record. 2mo
Martyn_J_Pass @4thhouseontheleft Sorry, I didn‘t mean to push my wares lol. Whatever you do, don‘t pay for it, I get free codes for my audio books to give away. You‘d think that these gremlin mistakes would be spotted but so often they don‘t and with big performers there must be a lot of money involved. Still, super glad you enjoyed this. I‘m listening to Handmaids Tale on audio and it‘s killing me with its visceral delivery. 😭 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @Martyn_J_Pass You‘re not peddling, I looked it up and it sounds interesting! I only listen to audiobooks through my library. 😃 2mo
Martyn_J_Pass @4thhouseontheleft Thanks. I just hate seeing authors use fantastic platforms like LITSY to push their product when it‘s not meant for that. I‘m here because I love books and most of my reads come from you lovely folks recommending what you‘ve read. 2mo
Karkar I have seen/heard this a couple of times when I have followed an audio book with the text. Usually they are small word subs that do not change anything. 2mo
Birdsong28 Yes. I encountered this in The Colour Purple and Circe when I used the the whispersync option. In Circe words were changed and in the audiobook some sentences were missing!! In The Colour Purple some words were changed but nothing major. 2mo
ljuliel I listen to lots of audiobooks and have also done the read along with the audio. I think I‘ve noticed it in 3 books ..one was Rick Bragg reading his own book ( My Southern Journey) ,and he repeats one sentence twice. Since I like listening to him talk, I didn‘t mind a bit. I can‘t recall what the others were, but the last one had several spots where the narrator changed or added a word. It didn‘t ruin the book in any way though. 2mo

I think this is my favourite book read this year! And as an audiobook? AMAZING! This book shows how audiobooks are meant to be done.
An oral history of Daisy Jones and an upcoming band called The Six, this novel outlines, in interviews, their rise to fame, and their ultimate downfall. With actors like Benjamin Bratt, Judy Greer and many more reading, this was an emotion-fed audiobook. It was real, heart wrenching, and just so fun!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Clwojick Okay, I‘ve listened to probably 500+ audiobooks in the past 3 years, so they can often blend together a bit, but this one BLEW ME AWAY! The book itself was amazing, but the full cast of narrators 🤩🤩🤩 Definitely in my top 5 audiobooks of all time! 2mo

Taylor Jenkins Reid manages to capture every nuance of the American rock and roll myth and every line is enthralling: the writing, the producing, the addictions, the lust, the tours, the fame, the jealousy, the heartbreak, the redemption. What will the characters give—and give up—to make great art, or to have great love? All the world loves Daisy. Can she learn to love herself? #audiobook

I read this, bit just finished it on audio, which I really enjoyed. The cast was pretty great, especially Jennifer Beals as Daisy Jones. Sometimes the male characters blurred together, and Billy Dunne had a random accent, but it was a good listening experience.

Does anyone have another cast of characters audiobook rec?

I was so upset I had to put it down for a few days. But I picked it back up and pushed through. And while I knew one thing that happened it still was a fantastic read. You can‘t really soil the complicated relationships. I‘m looking forward to seeing the show!
