Where the Crawdads Sing
Where the Crawdads Sing | Delia Owens
Fans of Barbara Kingsolver will love this stunning debut novel from a New York Times bestselling nature writer, about an unforgettable young woman determined to make her way in the wilds of North Carolina, and the two men that will break her isolation open. For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. She's barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark. But Kya is not what they say. Abandoned at age ten, she has survived on her own in the marsh that she calls home. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life lessons from the land, learning from the false signals of fireflies the real way of this world. But while she could have lived in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world--until the unthinkable happens. In Where the Crawdads Sing, Owens juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a heartbreaking coming of age story and a surprising murder investigation. Thought-provoking, wise, and deeply moving, Owens's debut novel reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

One of my favorite genres that I studied in college was the Southern Lit genre. Obviously, I might be biased because I‘m from the American South. But in my personal experience I‘ve found it to be one of the most atmospheric genres around.

So today on the blog I wanted to take a second and share some of my favorite Southern Lit books. This post is just skimming the top of the genre so I‘ll probably have a part two up sometime in the near future.

My first book of 2024! I stayed up past midnight to finish it. 😂 I think I‘m probably the only person left who hadn‘t actually read this book, so I figured it was time. It actually was pretty slow to me at the beginning, but I really enjoyed the second half!

This was an interesting read! I enjoyed the locations and the character work. I could feel the loneliness and trauma build into the characters. The story and the translation worked really well together and I liked how expressionless the storytelling felt and how much impact it still had to the reader.

At first I wasn't sure about this book but it dragged me right in, up to the point where I started looking around for some Southern recipes and learning how to make grits. I was REALLY surprised about the ending, I did not expect that. Definitely a pick.

Finished this a couple nights ago… yes I cried. Have been wanting to read this so I can finally watch the movie. Creatively intertwines a murder mystery, love story, sad family dynamics, nature and science. Really enjoyed it and recommend.

I was instantly engrossed in this wonderfully lyrical and touching tale. The marshland setting is a character in itself; the stillness and quietness captivating.

Kya was an easy character to fall in love with. Her life was eloquently written - flowing organically from her childhood of abandonment to love. Tate and Kya‘s love story felt real and raw.

This emotionally wrought novel is an ode to the natural world. Five big stars

I liked this more than I anticipated. I thrifted this one because it was a popular title & meant to read it sooner where there was still hype around it, but here we are.

I enjoyed Kya‘s story & the way the timeline flowed.

I know there was some controversy surrounding the author and the book but I really enjoyed reading this! I didn‘t think I would like it as much as I did. The story line was different and intriguing.

Kya has been left by everyone to fend for herself and called by locals the Marsh Girl. She becomes friends with local boy Tate and romantically involved with Chase Andrews after who‘s death she becomes the prime suspect. A must read!

A beautifully written and evocative story. Even if I hadn‘t seen the movie version , it would be easy to picture the marsh and shore settings, feel the small town prejudices. The movie obviously was very faithful to the book, so I knew what was coming, and still was enthralled. Just questioning why I waited so long to read this.

This book was a flawless piece of literature. It was captivating, emotional, and truly just an amazing story to read. It drew me in and kept me glued to my seat. It was so truly beautiful and took me to so many different places. Would highly recommend, it was a slightly more mature book but for any older reader I would greatly recommend.

Kya is a swamp girl whose family has slowly left her one by one. Now, she‘s living with her abusive father, who she barely speaks to. Kya has to fend for herself in the swamp, cooking and finding food for herself, and travelling to the town to buy supplies. If you like books that are set during an older time period and are about a character‘s struggles and their ability to overcome them, then you will enjoy this book.

gabe.anoos One theme in the book is independence vs. human connection because Kya has started to fend for herself ever since she was a small child, which means that she‘s had little to no communication with other people. Along with living in the swamp, she is very isolated from the neighbouring town and she is very cast out with the townspeople. 13mo

Awesome novel with an intriguing, touching story. It was interesting to follow Kya's path from child to adulthood and how her thoughts changed over the years. The poems were strategically well placed, enhanced the emotions or build up anticipation.
I saw the end coming, however the narrative was so well done and the twist nicely revealed that it didn't bother me. In fact, I enjoyed how it was unfold.

My mom loaned this to me ages ago—probably when it first came out—and I finally got around to reading it. 😬 Enjoyable if not particularly surprising, the story unfolded exactly as I expected it to. I‘m sure I‘m being a little contrary here but I thought it was just ok, not great. Still, I can tell my mom I read it!

SamAnne This was a very so-so read for me too. No kid with no education is going to learn to read complicated biology books in 6 months. And the Black characters were almost caricatures. 1y
