"Wilder Girls is so sharp and packs so much emotion in such wise ways. I'm convinced we're about to witness the emergence of a major new literary star." --Jeff VanderMeer, author of the New York Times bestseller Annihilation A feminist Lord of the Flies about three best friends living in quarantine at their island boarding school, and the lengths they go to uncover the truth of their confinement when one disappears. This fresh, new debut is a mind-bending novel unlike anything you've read before. It's been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty's life out from under her. It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don't dare wander outside the school's fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything. But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there's more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true. "Stunningly unique and with bold, atmospheric writing, Wilder Girls hooked me from the very first page. The eeriness of Raxter Island permeates every scene, and Rory Power's characters are fierce and honest, blazing from the pages. This is a groundbreaking speculative story--brutal and beautiful, raw and unflinching. I adored this book." --Emily Suvada, author of This Mortal Coil

This book was utterly gripping with fascinating characters. Still not sure how I feel about the ending but the writing itself made it a pick for me.

This book is a lot darker than I thought it would be, and not just because it's set on an island in Maine in the fall. Brrrrrr.

So creepy and a bit gory plus some horrific humans-turned-monsters. One of those Sheryl Jackson-esque horrors where you don't quite get everything wrapped up for you. It's unsettling but thought-provoking, this book will stay with you for a while after you finish. Great character development, amazing world building (wear a sweater, it'll make you cold) and a riveting play on the quarantine trope.

#Movember - Girl Gone Wild: I don‘t know if I‘m interested in this book, but I really like the cover. This book “celebrates the resilience of girls and the earthshaking power of their friendships.” It‘s also described as eerie - I don‘t know why? Hmm...I guess that I‘m interested now.

Megabooks I‘m interested too, but I‘ve heard it‘s gory. Kind of like a female lord of the flies. Hmmm... Nice choice! 2w

I had high hopes in the first half, but I think the plot loses its way in the second half. I expected something darker & more menacing for the conclusion tbh, & I feel as if things weren‘t adequately explained. Love the cover though. 3⭐️

TW: violence, animal deaths, illness, & mention of self-harm.

With so many differing reviews, I am really enjoying this book. The friendship between Hetty and Byatt. Raxter Island, where they send those with The Tox, seems believable and so eerie. LGBT +, feminist and bold, these ladies take control of their futures. I hope they suceed.....

I can sort of see why people are loving or hating this book. I felt frantic and panicked for most of this but I think it influenced my experience of reading really well. I trusted no one and I props the author as a debut for being like “let's just kill everyone!“ none of this “magic/science loophole to bring everyone back to life“ crap. Just kill everyone! I mean it's been compared to Lord of the Flies so...

This was a unique and violent book. The characters were very human. Reese was like an abusive boyfriend. I liked the fact that I didn't like her. I wish the ending had more closure. There has to be a sequel in the works, right? Right? Apparently not.

So let's talk about wilder girls!
It was a book, amazingly put together and yet not quite up to my expectations. Maybe more than half of it was really slow for me. I didn't like how NOTHING significant was happening. The back stories and the depth were somwhow lacking as well as the relationships. However the story picked up its pace eventually. I enjoyed the Byatt side story a lot. I recommend to people who have patience to get past half of it.

Book 2 finished for #screamathon. 🎃 @4thhouseontheleft

This was almost a so-so because the end felt disjointed and unfinished. However, the rest of the story was creepy and unique, so for that it's a pick. I loved that almost all of the characters were female too.

I love the cover art on this one too. It's amazing!

I admit the cover is what got me at first - it‘s very Dali-esque. But, the book felt disjointed, and the ending was very abrupt with a boatload of unanswered questions. Kudos for the abundance of girl power and the portrayal of strong, fierce women. I finished it, but barely. 🤷‍♀️

...I'm confused. Where is the rest of the book? Is there a sequel planned or did the publisher accidentally print and release it without the last eight chapters? Is this a choose your own ending story and we just have to make it up? We may never know. This one has so much going for it, great plot, well built characters, original ideas and a beautiful cover - not to mention the hype! Then it just fizzled out into nothing at the "end". Whyyyy?!

Apparently (according to an email I just got from Uppercase) these are the top added YA books on Goodreads so far this year (though NOTE RWRB is not a YA novel. At all.) I've only read five of them. How about you all?

I heard mixed reviews of this book. They story is an interesting idea, creepy in a good way. But then, at times it just seems creepy to be creepy. Hetta and Byatt have the promise of interesting storylines, but then there are holes throughout. I liked it, but didn‘t love it. I thought it was creepy, but more like seeing a car crash I can‘t look away from. The plot twists are well done with some you can see coming. So, liked it, but didn‘t love it.

This one, sadly, did not live up to my hopes and expectations. It wasn‘t a “bad” read, just not as great as I had hoped upon hearing it was a female take on lord of the flies. It fell far short of that for me but I likely would have enjoyed it more if not for that expectation.

I loved this book. It‘s bizarre and crazy in so many excellent ways. It‘s not just the fantastic and horrifying elements either. The relationships between all the girls and Ms. Welch and the headmistress hold a lot of layers. Especially if you look at this book in terms of how society treats teenage girls and young women, this book seems to hold so much just beneath the surface. #youngadult #RoryPower

This sounded awesome, a fresh idea with a bit of mystery and a lot of horror.

Unfortunately, I couldn‘t care less about any of the characters. Some of the writing was a bit blunt and at times I had to re-read paragraphs just to make sense it.
And the story was not all that captive in the end. I‘m not certain if I was anticipating something different; or if this simply wasn‘t my sort of book; or if the whole thing just fell flat.

I know a lot of people want to call this a Lord of the Flies with girls. I don‘t fully agree with that. Girls bodies start changing in strange and creature like ways when they hit puberty. The Navy told them to stay on the island stay behind the fence where their school is. Don‘t break quarantine, they will find a cure for them. Fair warning it might be a bit gruesome for some. I usually shy away from body horror. This didn‘t bother me.

Wilder Girls follows three friends – Hetty, Byatt, and Reese – who, alongside their schoolmates and teachers, have been under quarantine on their school‘s island for the past 18 months due to a mysterious illness that they call the Tox. I loved the premise of the book, and thought it was decently executed, but I hated how many unanswered questions there were at the end! Still going with a pick, since it was a quick and enjoyable read.

I have to give Rory Power credit for her truly gruesome descriptions (chapter 14 in particular) but her storytelling here is very uneven. #Horror isn‘t my thing, but regardless of the genre, the plot and the resolution should still make sense! The explanations I came up with in my head were much more satisfying than what was on the page, and the quasi-romantic relationship felt like an afterthought pandering to a particular audience. #ya #bookclub

This was one of my most anticipated books and I just did not love it.The writing was able to pull me in, the story was entertaining enough to finish. The middle took a weird turn for me and never seemed to come back. I didn't like the ending although it does leave room for drawing your own conclusions. Some of the characters you are to believe they are resourceful, cunning, smart seemed to believe things that they were told at face value.

Always a disappointment when amazing covers happen to underwhelming books 😩

The atmospheric creepiness and the body horror of the Tox-infested girls on Raxter Island were incredibly effective in that I was super grossed out all the time but the plot and the choppy narration just d r a g g e d. The minimal backstory explanation and abrupt ending really cemented this as a pan for me. Sad, because the concept had a lot of potential!
