Ashley used it in her post! How cool is that? Another English learner strategy that would work is providing short readings for homework. Send these scripts home for students to practice. If you love the science and math you will love A Computer Called Katherine book.It was written by Suzanne Slade and Illustrated by Veronica Jamieson. This B book is the historical story of Katherine who helped send the first manned spaceship to the moon. Katherine was a African American female who was judged by the color of her skin and rejected while working at NASA. This is a historical RA book that should be in every classroom!#ucflae3414su20.

JoslynB I do like the mixture of science and social studies because of this book's historical value. The UDL principle is a good choice as a means of assessing what students may know to gauge how to proceed with the book. The ESOL strategy is one I have not seen used and great to see because students can benefit from learning about historical figures they may not typically be introduced to. 4y

There have been many picture book biographies about these important women since the Hidden Figures movie came out a few years ago. English learner strategy 28 aligns with providing biographies to students. Make sure you cite the number. 4y

DrSpalding When we met in class face-to-face, I would provide a magic pencil to a student in class. I would hide it in their folder and then read the story and have them pull it out. This would be a great idea for your classroom. You found a helpful resource as well. Picture book biographies should be in your classroom library. 4y

DrSpalding Word searches can be helpful vocabulary tools. Remember that not all text that rhymes is considered poetry. This seems like it is factual, non-fiction. What a great book to incorporate into a bodies of water social studies/geography unit plan. 4y

I recall my son‘s third grade teacher having the children create all of the characters and perform a dramatic reenactment of the story. Another good option. This MF book "The Girl Who Drank the Moon"by Kelly Barnhart, was the winner of the 2017 Newbery Medal Award. It is a great LC book, as it focuses on the importance of blended family relationships and how to cope with different events in your life. #ucflae3414su20

dbears1 The story is about a little girl who was sacrificed by the town‘s elders to a witch, but the witch was not who they expected. Instead, after each sacrificial ceremony the witch rescues the babies and gives them to worthy families in faraway towns. However, one year the witch accidentally feeds a baby girl moonlight (Luna). As Luna‘s birthday approaches, she is faced with something she's never experienced.

"The Last Stop On Market Street", is a great RF book.The author is Matt De La Pena and the illustrator is Christian Robinson. In the book Cj takes a bus ride with his Nana .While on the way his Nana helps him see that beauty is everywhere.CJ ask why he doesn't have certain things like other people.Nana let's him know he should appreciate beauty rather than materialistic things. CJ gets a chance to see beauty with his eye closed!?#ucflae3414su20

In the book Nana helps CJ realize that beauty doesn't come from materialistic things and that he can look at his surroundings. Giving students enough time for learners to respond to questions is very important in order to make sure all students have enough time to elaborate on their thoughts. Emmaturtle3 I loved reading your post because I also picked this book and had different UDLs and ESOL strategies. I think the 9.2 strategy about coping skills ties in perfectly with this book, it could truly change a child‘s perspective of how to cope with their personal situation. I also really like how you stated you must give the students time to think before responding, that is something that often slips my mind. Great post!!:) 4y
