The Night Diary | Veera Hiranandani
81 posts | 58 read | 80 to read
In the vein of Inside Out and Back Again and The War That Saved My Life comes a poignant, personal, and hopeful tale of India's partition, and of one girl's journey to find a new home in a divided country It's 1947, and India, newly independent of British rule, has been separated into two countries: Pakistan and India. The divide has created much tension between Hindus and Muslims, and hundreds of thousands are killed crossing borders. Half-Muslim, half-Hindu twelve-year-old Nisha doesn't know where she belongs, or what her country is anymore. When Papa decides it's too dangerous to stay in what is now Pakistan, Nisha and her family become refugees and embark first by train but later on foot to reach her new home. The journey is long, difficult, and dangerous, and after losing her mother as a baby, Nisha can't imagine losing her homeland, too. But even if her country has been ripped apart, Nisha still believes in the possibility of putting herself back together. Told through Nisha's letters to her mother, The Night Diary is a heartfelt story of one girl's search for home, for her own identity...and for a hopeful future.

I was hesitant to read this given that I thought this might be too scary a topic for a younger reader, but in the end I was impressed. I thought this was well done. And now maybe I should set a goal to read more Newbery winners next year.

Recommended to me by a student. I generally enjoy YA historical fiction. I enjoyed the narrative and also the history lesson. I'm sure I learned about the India/Pakistan split in high school, but I certainly didn't remember it well.

I love this book and here is a summery

The Night Diary is a fictional account of one family's experience during the partition of India into two countries in 1947. The story is told in the form of diary entries written by the main character, Nisha beginning on her twelfth birthday, addresses to her deceased mother.

This is a beautifully written and really powerful book. Describing the events of the partition of India from the point of view of a child really brings home the human reality of it. It's a great, moving account of the experience of being displaced, I'd highly recommend this for both children and adults.

Beautifully written middle grade book in which a young girl writes each night to her dead mother. Nisha, the main character, finds herself and her family fleeing Pakistan during a time of unrest between Hindus and Muslims.

The writing in this heartfelt story does a great job of addressing hard topics in an age appropriate way.

I loved this book. I have mentored a refugee family from Pakistan for over 5 years. What they have taught me is so much more than I could write. I gained more than I gave for sure. mrp27 Nisha experienced trauma when that friendship ended and it caused her to close up so to speak. I think it's difficult for Nisha to make friends because children don't understand or have patience to deal with her silence. She had Amils strength and courage to help her befriend Hafa. 4y
JaclynW Not everyone makes friends easily. Her silence is hard for others to understand and navigate. @mrp27 Yes, maybe she used Amil's strength and courage to help make friends with Hafa. Maybe she felt brave in a new place. Maybe being in her mother's childhood home have her bravery too. 4y

mrp27 I agree that she feels cheated. All through her life she seems to be searching for confirmation that her mother was more than just a thought but an actual person that loved her. She got that confirmation through meeting her uncle and being in her mothers childhood home. 4y
JaclynW @sblbooks @mrp27 Agreed. These people could have given her a piece of her mother, stories to share, etc. That means something to a child who has lost a mother. The circumstances were tough though. Opposing views, culture clashes. That's hard to navigate. The uncle was so sweet. 4y

#MGBUDDYREAD 💙

Anyone else who has read the book more than welcome to participate.

sblbooks I think part of it is her personality, but also that her family disapproves of women speaking their minds. 4y
mrp27 I've heard of children not speaking and there is a term for it and I wondered while reading if that was what ailed her or something else. When I taught pre k I had a child who would not speak. She spoke to her family and on occasion in a whisper to the other children. Her parents were really supportive in working with me to help her over come but in the year I had her she never spoke to me. 4y
mrp27 Also, as a formerly shy person I totally get how cathartic journal writing can be. 4y
See All 13 Comments
TheBookHippie @mrp27 I did not speak for an entire year when I was little, my sister died in our room when I was 7. I think trauma sometimes mutes children. I also don‘t remember this at all. 4y
mrp27 @TheBookHippie Oh wow, I'm so sorry for your loss and experience. I wondered if Nisha's ailment was due to the trauma of loosing her mother or like she said if it was her brain chemistry that was affecting her ability to speak. 4y
TheBookHippie @mrp27 I think the fight flight in your brain can be a powerful thing. Hard to know exactly, but I know with refugee children we see it a lot. 4y
mrp27 @TheBookHippie Agreed, it's really hard to know how the brain works and how it deals with the things we experience in life. 4y
JaclynW @mrp27 @thebookhippie I've heard of this too where kids go silent after trauma. I'm sorry to hear about your sister @thebookhippie. 💔 I bet that was tough to comprehend at such a young age. I was shy as well @mrp27 as a young girl, I hardly ever spoke at school or around strangers, when I did it was a whisper. I think writing was very helpful for our young character to sort out everything going on in her life. 4y
mrp27 @JaclynW I agree! I still journal today to sort through stuff but I've outgrown the shyness. 4y
JaclynW @mrp27 I don't journal! I can't do it! I know it's supposed to be very therapeutic. Several people have recommended it to me. I just can't. I've mostly overcome my shyness but it can creep up at times. 4y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I journal but I don‘t save them after a year or two I destroy them 🤣🤣🤣 to protect EVERYONE 🤣🤦🏽‍♀️😂🤷🏽‍♀️ 4y
Chelsibno I think there‘s a variety of reasons why a person might feel more comfortable journaling than sharing their thoughts out loud. I journaled a lot as a kid. My older sister would judge nearly everything that came out of my mouth, so I got to the point where I‘d barely speak whenever she was around. Journaling definitely felt like a refuge where I could speak my mind without any repercussions. 4y

Back to work in the library means I‘m listening to audiobooks again! This was a great one to listen to- set in 1947 during the Partition of India, 12 year old Nisha writes in her diary about what‘s happening around her trying to make sense of it all while migrating out of newly-formed Pakistan with her father, grandmother and twin brother. Great storytelling and includes an authors note. #booked2020 #setinindia

I enjoyed this epistolary novel of a young girl‘s experience when India is freed from British rule in 1947 and splits into India and Pakistan. She writes letters to her Muslim mother (who died at her & her twin brother‘s birth) as they flee their home to cross the border with their Hindu father.

This is a beautiful, important book. Nisha is 12 years old in 1947 and she feels the loss of her mother who died in childbirth. Nisha copes with her thoughts and feelings by writing to her mother at night in a diary. The family is then caught in the political turmoil of India‘s partition and has to deal with becoming refugees in their own country. Elegant writing and memorable characters mix with themes of family, grief, and tolerance.

This middle grade book tells the story of the partition of India in 1947, and its effects on a family that relocated to the “New India”. It is told through Nisha who receives a journal for her twelfth birthday. Her Mama was Muslim, but she died in childbirth. Her Papa is Hindu. Nisha can‘t understand why she must leave her home and why the two groups can not live as one. She writes her feelings as letters to her mother in the journal. #booked2019

Such a good story! It‘s written in the form of diary entries. A 12 year old girl writes to the mother she never knew and tells her the story of her family‘s journey during India‘s partition in 1947. Powerful, gripping- it touches on differences, fear of the other, and ultimately how we are all the same. Great audio narration as well! One of my great uncles was a missionary in #India and therefore some of my cousins (first cousins once removed) grew up there. One of those cousins married the son of another missionary, and she told us a little about the partition. Her father-in-law, a humble Christian missionary, quietly helped several thousand Muslims and Hindus get to the right side of the border and saved their lives. Just finished up my IRL book club‘s June pick during lunch today - I loved it. It‘s an immensely readable middle-grade book with a diary format. The MC is a 12 year old half-Hindu, half-Muslim girl whose family is living through India‘s independence from Britain, which divided India into two countries, India and Pakistan. This was a subject I didn‘t know much about and the book was really well-done. A Newbery Honor Book.

Nisha, 12, and her twin brother Amil are caught up with their Hindu father in newly-formed Muslim Pakistan. Like so many #middlegrade reads, this is as much a book about growing up as it is about the historical moment it portrays.
