A part of the book that really stood out to me was at the end when they all had a dance party. In younger grades I feel like this is important because who doesn't love a good dance party but it also shows they that its okay to be you in your community.
This book is a thoughtful read that helps children understand the value of being apart of a community and sharing with others. I believe that this book shows how one little act of kindness can go a long way.

Omu cooks dinner for herself. Multiple people throughout the city knock on her door telling her how good the food smells. Omu offers everyone that knocks a bowl of her dinner. At the end of the book she does not have any dinner left for herself and then by surprise everyone that she offered food brought her food in return.
I really liked this book. I liked the message that it is important to not only share but to give back as well.
The little boy tugged at Omu‘s sleeve. “Don‘t worry, Omu. We are not here to ask… We are here to give.”
A cute fictional story, Caldecott Honor recipient that shows the chain reaction of being a positive person that shares with others. A good community helpers book, where the members come together to help one another.
This book won the 2018 Caldecott award and was published in 2018 as well. This book gives such a good depiction on the awards of giving and how it can benefit you back when you give to something or someone. It would bring up such a good lesson for children.
As cliche as this sounds this is the perfect book to read for teaching about sharing is caring. It is best for younger students when coming to school and knowing how to treat their peers.
The Caldecott honor book, Thank you, Omu! Was published in 2018. I personally really enjoyed this read and the illustrations were the best part! The pictures were so cute with everyone coming to share what they love with Omu since she shared with them previously.
“While Omu‘s big fat pot of thick red stew was empty, her heart was full of happiness and love.”
The illustrations are very unique, they are made from cut outs of paper that are all priced together. They display a lot of diversity which I really appreciate, especially in a children‘s book.
Omu is looking forward to her stew that she prepared for dinner. Throughout the day people from all over the town are drawn to her door because of how appetizing it smells. When Omu goes to eat her dinner at the end of the day, there was none left for her. She hears a knock at her door and everyone she shared with came back to return the favor. This book emphasizing the meaning of sharing, giving back, and caring for one another.
Cute, heartwarming story of a sweet old lady sharing her delicious meal with her neighbors. Emphasis on sharing and giving.
Thank you, Omu by Oge Mora published in 2018 is both a Caldecott Honor Book and winner of the Coretta Scott King award. This book was a heartwarming story about an elderly lady who made a wonderful red stew that brought many to her apartment for a taste. The illustrations are scraps of what seem to be construction paper along with some other things like maps and newspapers.
This book takes the reader on a journey of beautiful illustrations and shows the readers that giving and sharing can be a beautiful thing.

This RF, RA Caldecott and Corretta Scott King award winning book would be a wonderful book to read to your students. The theme of this book focuses on the importance of generosity, kindness, and gratitude. Omu made herself some wonderful smelling stew, which she shared with many neighbors until the stew was gone. In the end, gratitude and generosity brought Omu a very special gift. #UCFLAE3414SP21

Thank you, Omu is a RF book about a woman who makes a delicious smelling stew. It smells so good that people start coming to her house to ask for some! She is very generous and gives away her soup to everyone who asks for some. She gives away all her soup so now she has nothing to eat! Read this book about generosity and reciprocity.
This book was awarded both the Coretta Scott King and Caldecott.

This book was great! It is realistic fiction and a picture book. It is also a Caldecott winner! The story is about lots of people in a neighborhood coming to get a taste of Omus stew until she has no more left! The ending is that everyone brings her food as a thank you and has such a great tale of thankfulness and being generous. I would use a Readers Theatre teaching strategy for this story and allow the students to act out the book with props!
“While Omu‘s big fat pot of thick red stew was empty, her heart was full of happiness and love.”
This was my nieces nap time story of the day - this book has beautiful illustrations (plus some wisdom about sharing that I‘m attempting to impart with a possessive 3 year old). Definitely recommend.
When I read this story for the first time at the Read for the Record event back in November of 2019, I really enjoyed knowing that this story showed students the importance of giving. Omu gave so much away in her story, but by the end she was rewarded ten-fold by the many individuals she came across that tasted her stew. Her generosity was returned and as the story says, “That dinner was the best she had ever had.“
Thank You, Omu! is a Caldecott award winner. It is about a woman (Omu) who cooks a delicious stew. Stews take a long time to cook, so all day she looks forward to eating her stew for dinner. However, something changes her dinner plans. This book does a great job at teaching readers how being selfless is rewarding. It would be great for storytelling, because it has a clear beginning, middle, and end. Also, problem and solution.

Thank you, Omu! is a caldecott winner. I absolutley loved the art in this book. It reminded me of something from my past and threw me back into being a kid. The art is much different and is deserving of its reward
